MOTIVE-FLUID-SUPPLY CONTROLLER FOR TURBINES.

To all to ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ARREN B. FLANDERs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in Motive-Fluid-Supply Controllers for Turbines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fluid pressure admitting means for motor-sand particularly to means for augmenting the normal fluid pressure supply to a motor under certain conditions.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide means whereby a governor or other speed responsive device will control the admission of the motive fluid into the casing of the motor to be driven.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby a low pressure motor will receive motive fluid from a low pressure supply until such time as the load upon the motorbecomes great enough to demand augmentation of the normal fluid pressure supply, this additional fluid being then supplied to the motor.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of one embodiment of my invention; and, Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through a pair of admission valves and their casings with which my invention may be equipped.
In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration I have shown a low pres.- sure turbine and its generator receiving its motive fluid from the exhaust pipe of a steam engine. The pipe leading from the steam engine to the turbine is provided with a port which may be put into open communication with an auxiliary source of supply so as to feed steam from this auxiliary source of supply into the exhaust pipe when the supply of exhaust steam from the steam engine is insufficient to maintain the required speed of the turbine. The embodiment shown has been selected merely to give a comprehensive idea of the general principles involved and the specific mechanism shown is not to be understood as being essential to the proper accomplishment of the end which it is desired to attain.
Referring now to the drawings by nus merals of reference, 3 designates a low pres Sure tu i om which m y b ven a y suitable driven element, as for example an electric generator 4. Communicating with the casing of the turbine 3 is a steam chest 5. receiving motive fluid from a primary source, as for example the exhaust pipe 6 of the steam cylinder? The pipe 6 communi: cates with the receiver 8 and with a relief valve 9. A throttle valve 10' may also be provided in the pipe. In the steam chest 5 is a spring pressed valve 11, the stem 12 of which projects through the top of the chest 5 and is connected to a lever 13 fulcrumed on the bracket arm 14: of a valve casing 15 carried by the chest 5. The lever 13 is provided with a block 16 movable in a slotted head 17 on the valve stem 18 of a valve 19 adapted to be seated on the seat 20 of the casing 15 whereby said casing 15 is divided into two chambers, an upper one 21 and a lower one 22. The valve 19 is normally seated by spring 23 and the slot in the head 17 is of such length as to permit a slight play of the block 16 without operating the valve 19. The degree of movement of the block 16 and the slotted head 17 is dependent upon the position of the adjusting screw 24: carried by said head. The upper chamber 21 of the valve casing 15 is at all times in communication with the pipe 6 through the medium of a branch pipe 25. The lower chamber 22 is at all times in communication with a secondary source of supply, in the present instance comprising a pipe 26 containing steam under boiler pressure, through a pipe 27. It will be obvious that if the valve 19 is unseated communication may be had be tween the chambers 21 and 22 so that steam may flow from the pipe 26. through the pipe 27 through the chambers 22 and 21 thence to the pipe 6 and to the casing of the turbine 3. Theregulation of the valve 19 may be controlled entirely by the governor 28 positioned at, a convenient point, upon the case ing and adapted to depress one end of a lever 29when its speed is relatively slow and to raise said end of the lever when the speed is relatively high. If the end of the lever cient to drive the motor the governor will cause further depression of the one end of the lever 29 so as to raise the valve 19 from its seat 20 and permit fluid pressure to enter into the valve casing 15 from the secondary source of supply (for example pipe 26) and flow into the pipe 6 and thence to the motor 3 so as to accelerate it. As soon as the motor 3 is speeded up beyond the desired speed the governor 28 will raise the end of the lift 29 to which it is connected and cause the valve 19 to drop upon its seat so as to cut off the secondary fluid supply and the motor will operate only under the primary fluid supply. From the foregoing it will be apparent that the motive fluid fed to the turbine or other motor may be controlled entirely by the governor or other similar speed responsive device.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
hat I claim is:
1. A motor, a primary fluid supply, a secondary fluid supply, pipes leading from both fluid supplies to the motor, valves in said pipes, an actuating lever having a rigid connection with one valve and a connection with the other valve permitting a limited movement of the lever independent of said valve and a speed responsive device on the motor for actuating the lever to unseat both said valves.
2. In combination with a low pressure turbine, a source of low pressure fluid supply communicating with the inlet port of the turbine, a source or" high pressure fluid supply communicating with said inlet port, a valve for controlling the delivery of fluid from said low pressure source to said inlet port, a second valve for controlling the delivery of fluid from said high pressure source to said inlet port, a lever for controlling the operation of both of said valves, a load responsive governor driven by the motor for actuating the lever, and a lost motion connection between said lever and the second valve whereby said second valve is opened subsequent to the opening of the first mentioned valve.
8. In combination with a low pressure turbine, a low pressure source of fluid supply, a high pressure source of fluid supply, means for establishing communication between the low pressure source of fluid supply and the inlet port to the turbine, a valve located in said means between the low pres sure source of supply and the inlet port, conduit means communicating with the high pressure source of supply and said first mentioned means for augmenting the fluid delivered from the low pressure source of supply to the inlet port with fluid from the high pressure source of supply, a second valve located in said conduit, means between the high pressure source of supply and the first mentioned means for controlling the delivery of augmenting fluid, a load responsive governor, and means positively actuated by the governor for positively actuating both of said valves, and a lost motion connection between said positively actuated means and the second valve whereby the second valve is opened subsequently to the opening of the first mentioned valve.
4-. In combination with a low pressure turbine, a low pressure source of fluid supply communicating with the working passage of the turbine, a valve located between said source and the turbine, a high pressure source of fluid supply communicating with the working passage of the turbine, a second valve located between said high pressure source and the turbine, a speed responsive governor, means positively actuated by the governor for positively actuating both of said valves, and a lost motion connection between said means and the second valve, whereby the second valve is opened subsequently to the opening of the first mentioned valve.
