the screws 10, and swinging the casing and brackets 8 outwardly, the brackets may be disengaged from the screws and removed with the casing.

Arranged against the inner sides of the side stiles of the window frame are the coinbined screen guides and racks 13, which extend from the frame sill up to a point adjacent to the casing, as shown in Fig. 1. The said guides and racks are identical in construction, and therefore a detailed description of the one shown in Fig. 6 will sufice to impart a definite understanding of both. The guide and rack referred to is of light sheet-metal and of channel-form, and its back wall 14 is shaped to form a. rack. It will also be noted by reference to Fig. 6 that the combined guide and rack is provided at 15 with lugs in which are notches 16, for the passage of fastening screws, this construction being preferable because after the said screws are slightly loosened, the combined guide and rack may be lifted out of engagement therewith.

The free end of the screen 1 is provided with a casing 17, the ends of which are disposed and movable in the channel guides 13. Movable rectilinearly in said casing 17 are latches 18, having shoulders 19 and notches 20, Fig. 4, and mounted on rivets 21 in said casing are springs 22 the outer arms of which are arranged to bear against the shoulders 19, as shown, so that said arms will tend to press the latches 18 outwardly. Pivoted at 23 in position to engage the notches 20 are pawls 24, and connected to the latches 18 and the pawls 24, are cables 25 and 26, respectively. The cables 25 are carried over a guide 27, and then downwardly through an opening 28 in the casing, and are provided below the casing with a finger piece 29. The cables 26 are carried over a guide 30, and are likewise carried downwardly through the opening 28, and are provided below the casing with a handle 31. Thus it will be seen that when the pawls 24 are engaged with the notches 20 of the latches 18, the said latches will be retained in retracted positions, and consequently the screen may be drawn downwardly or permitted to move upwardly at the pleasure of the operator. lVhen, however, the handle 31 is drawn downwardly to disengage the pawls from the latches, the latches will be impelled outwardly by the outer arms of the springs 22, with the result that the screen will be adjustably and strongly secured in the position in which it is placed.

vIt will be manifest from the foregoing that the adjustable fixing means best shown in Fig. 4 is, at once, simple, strong and easily operated; and it will also be manifest that after an adjustable fixing of the screen,

it is simply necessary when the screen is to be moved, to draw the latches 1.8 inwardly able fixing means in combination with the spring-actuated roller will maintain the screen at all times in a taut state which is desirable because it tends to prolong the usefulness of the screen. The inner arms of the springs 22 bear against the pawls 24, as s shown.

While designed primarily for use on win- ,dow frames, I desire it distinctly understood that my novel roller screen is adapted to be used on porches and other frames to which it is applicable without departure from my claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. In a screen construction, the combination of a frame,r a spring-actuated roller mounted adjacent to one end of said frame, combinedguides and racks connected with the side stiles of the frame, a screen movable in said guides and connected with and adapted to be wound on the roller, a casing connected with the free end of the screen and arranged with its end portions in the guides, spring-pressed latches guided in said casing and arranged at their outer ends to engage the racks, spring-pressed pawls mounted in the casing and arranged to engage and hold the latches against outward movement, and means carried by the casing for retracting the latches and other means also carried by the casing for disengaging the pawls from the latches.

2. In a screen construction, the combination of a frame, a spring-actuated roller mounted adjacent to oneend of said frame, guides connected with the side stiles of the frame and provided with racks at their backs, a screen movable in said guides and connected with and adapted to be wound free end of the screen and open at its ends and having its ends movable in the guides, and spring-pressed means carried by said casing and movable through the open ends thereof and into and out of engagement with the racks.

3. In a screen construction, the combination of a screen, a casing connected thereto and open at its ends, rectilinearly movable .11C on the roller, a casing connected with YtheV latches guided in saidl casing and having shoulders and notches, pawls mounted in the casing and arranged to engage said notches, springs mounted in the casing and having outer arms engaging the shoulders of the latches and inner arms bearing against the pawls, and cables connected with the latches and the pawls, respectively, and extending outside the casing.

4. In a screen construction, a roller'casing, a roller mounted therein, a screen con# nected to the roller and movable into and out of the casing, and brackets fixed With respect to the end portions of the casing and disposed at right-angles thereto and each having notches at opposite edges, arranged out of alinement with each other.

5. In a screen construction, the combination of a suitably-supported spring-actuated roller, a screen connected to said roller, a iXed channel guide receiving one edge of the screen and having a rack at its back and and also having lugs provided in their lower edges With notches7 means resting in said notches and supporting and connecting the channel guide to a support, and means carried by the screen and detachably engaging the rack of the channel guide to hold the screen against movement by the action of the spring-actuated roller.
