To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. DENNIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the construction of ornamental boxes and particularly to a box the surface of which is composed of paper or similar fabric.

The object of my invention is to provide a substitute for pasteboard boxes that shall be superior to the pasteboard box in appearance as well as in strength and that may be cheaply constructed and may present a durable highly ornamental appearance.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide an ornamental box having a continuous line of decoration or ornamentation at the edge or corner between the side of the body or cover and the top or bottom and in this respect the invention is designed as an improvement upon boxes having paper surfaces ornamented by a line of applied gilt'or metal surface paper pasted or applied as a continuous line on said corner or edge.

A further object of my invention is to avoid certain objections incident to boxes having rounded corners when made of pasteboard.

In carrying out my invention I make the body or cover, either or both, out of sheet metal constituting the base for the reception and application of a thin sheet of paper or similar fabric applied to the surface of the metal and made closely adherent thereto by means of glue or other cementing substance. I also, by preference, construct the body and the cover, either or both, out of sheet metal formed or struck up in a die into a cupshaped body without seam or joint and coated with paper or other suitable fabric cemented closely to the smooth outer surface of said cup-shaped body.

My invention consists in the construction of box hereinafter described and more particularly specified in the claims.

Figure 1 is a side view of a box constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is avertical section of the box when adapted to hold face powder. Fig. 3 is a plan thereof. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through one silde of the body of the box with the neck in p ace.

1 indicates the cover and 2 the body of the box. base 3 as shown in the cross-section and each is, by preference, made by striking up or forming it into the shape desired out of a piece of sheet metal, so that it shall be free from joint or seam. The cup-shaped bodies forming the base for the coverand body of the box .are of substantially the same dimensions so that when placed together their edges will come into meeting engagement.

5 The construction of the base from sheet metal is particularly'useful in the case of boxes having rounded corners and avoids the objection found inthe case of rounded corner boxes made of pasteboard that they are liable to crack at the corner so as to mar their appearance to anextent making the same practically worthless. In my construction the rounded corner being of sheet metal and having the paper closely adherent to the surface thereof such difficulty isnot experienced.

The sheet metal base 3 is provided with a closely adherent coating of paper or similar material 4 cemented to the outer surface thereof in any desired manner and giving to the completed box the appearance, in all respects, of an ordinary pasteboard box excepting that, by reason of the smooth metal surface and freedom from joints in the sheet Each consists of a sheet metal metal base at the corners or other places the outside surface of the box presents an extremely smooth appearance. Said paper surface is, as shown, extended around the edge of the cup-shaped metal body and also, by preference, covers the entire inner surface of each sheet metal body or cup alhough the latter feature of the construction is not necessary to the main purposes of my invention.

To insure that the edges of the two cups shall come into meeting engagement in the completed box, a neck of pasteboard or other material 5 is secured in the cup-shaped metal body 2 forming the body of the box. The paper, by extending around the edge of the sheet metal, assists in the formation of a good joint at the edge of the box and cover.

In pasteboard boxes designed particularly for toilet articles, it is frequently de sirable to give to the box an increased ornamental appearance by means of a metal bandor line of gilt or similar metal surface at the corner? of the top and sometimes also the corner 8 of the box body. This I Secure cheaply and in durable form by applying the paper coating in such manner as to leave continuous lineof the sheet metal exposed around the box at said corner or corners, the metal so exposed being preferably treated before the application of the coating with a gilt or other metal lacquer. \Vhen the coating is made of thin paper the line of decoration thus afforded by the exposed metal at the corner cannot be distinguished from the ordinary gilt line provided in pasteboard boxes by gilding the surface or applying a strip of thin met alized paper while, moreover, the decoration provided according to my invention is much more durable than that afforded in the ordinary constructions of pasteboard boxes. F urthermore, byapplying the cemented coating in sections s'o as to break the surface of the coating along the corner 7 I avoid the diffi'culty experienced when the paper is applied as a continuous coating including said edge, and arising from the tendency of the weak paper coating to break at said edge so as to produce an unsightly appearance.

As the invention is particularly useful for toilet powder boxes, I show the box as provided with a false bottom 10 within the same and a flexible bag-like partial wrapper 11 of paper or similar material secured at its lower edges to the bottom of the'box and open at its top to allow removal of the. powder in small quantities by powder pufi'.

Fig. 4 is a vertical section through one sideof the body of the box with the neck in place and illustrates the way of fixing the neck whereby I secure a neat appearance and a close of the cover. The coating of paper 4 upon the metal base 3 where it passes over the edge of the metal base, in-

stead of being extended down .on the inside of the base, is extended up along the side of the pasteboard neck Safter it passes over the metal edge and is cemented to the pasteboard neck. A glazed or other paper coating 12 of the pasteboard on the outside of the neck is extended down over the paper stood that the pasteb'oard body of the neck is cemented or pasted directly to the inner metal surface of the base thus securing it firmly below as well as aboye the line of projection of the neck above the edge of the ase.

lVhat I claim as my invention is 1. An ornamental box constructed of a sheet metal base and a closely adherentcoating of paper, the metal of the base being exposed along the edge formed by the inter-, section of the side and top or bottom to produce a continuous line of ornamentation.

2. In a metal box having an inserted pasteb'oard neck, the combination of a body having a metal base and a coating of paper cemented to said base and extending over the edge thereof and up for attachment to the pasteboard of the neck and a coating for the pasteboard neck extending down over the edge of the base coating and cemented or pasted thereto as and for the purpose described.
