DYNAMOMETER.
Application filed December 30, 1915.
To all who m z'tmay concern Be it known that I, MAX Roons'rnorr, manufacturer, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Klein-Sedlitz, near Pirna, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dynamometers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to dynamometers of the type wherein the energy to be measured is transmitted to a recording or indicating mechanism by means of a nonrevolving piston, which is not directly connected to the shaft. In one type of such devices the turning moment is transmitted from the driving member or pulley to the driven member by hydraulic means, and it consequently is necessary to employ, for machines of different power consumption, pistons of different sectional areas, the determination of which sectional areas is very diflicult and the manufacture of which pistons is very expensive. According to this invention the transmission of the turning moment is efi'ected by mechanical means and preferably by the use of only one lever and adjustable abutments. By such an arrangement only a. single size or type of piston is required, since it is then unnecessary to employ pistons of different sizes or diameters, the adjustment for the desired turning moment being effected by means of the adjustable abutments. It is obvious that the piston may also be replaced by a simple rod, disposed within a hollow shaft, and such rod may be arranged to directly actuate the recording or indicating mechanism.
In the accompanying drawing wherein one embodiment of the invention is illustrated Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device of this character embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a plan, and Fig. 4 is a detail view showing one form of adjustable abutment.
According to the present invention, the means provided for transmitting the energy from the driving pulley or member to the driven member or shaft comprises a lever and a cooperatingadjustable abutment interposed between the driving and driven members, the adjustments of the abutment being effected in accordance with variations in the force of the turning moment to be trans- Specification of Letters Patent.

mitted between the driving and driven members.
As shown, a lever t is provided which is in the form of a bell crank lever, this lever being pivotally mounted on the shaft or driven member a through the agency of a pivot pin a and the arm a of a collar, the collar being fixed to the shaft or driven member. The lever t has an arm 6 which is movable in substantially a circumferential direction relatively to the shaft, under the influence of the turning moment applied thereto, and the lever has an arm t which projects into a recess 10 in the shaft or driven member, and this arm 25 of the lever is movable in substantially the direction of the axis of the shaft under the influence of the turning moment of the driving member. The shaft or driven member a is hollow or provided with a bore which extends axially thereof and preferably concentrically of the shaft, and a rod 2 is fitted to reciprocate longitudinally in this bore in the shaft, one end of the rod 2- being engaged by the arm t of the lever while the opposite end of the rod projects beyond the end of the shaft and is adapted to bear upon and to operate suitable registering or recording mechanism. As shown, the outer end of the rod 2 is arranged to actuate the hydraulic piston Z forming part of a hydraulic registering or recording mechanism.
The driving member in the present instance is in the form of a pulley b, it being provided with an ear 0 which projects laterally therefrom and is formed with a plurality of radially spaced apertures (Z. The abutment, which is carried by the driving member or pulley and which cooperates with the arm t of the lever, is shown in the form of a screw 7 and this screw or abutment may be placed in any one ofthe radially spaced apertures (Z of the driving member.
The mode of operation of the dynamometer constructed as hereinbefore described is, briefly, as follows: Assuming that motion is imparted to the driving member or pulley b in a clockwise direction in Figs. 1 and 4, the abutment f will bear upon the arm t of the lever with a force which is proportionate to the turning moment between the driving and driven members. The force so applied to the arm t of the lever, by the abutment 7", tends to rotate the lever about the pin to as an axis. This force applied to the lever tends to move the arm 25 of the lever against the rod 2 with a force proportionate' to the turning moment between the driving and driven members. The resulting outward movement of the rod 2, under influence of the arm 52 of the lever, causes this rod to bear upon the piston Z of the hydraulic measuring or indicating or recording mechanism with a force proportionate to the turning moment between the driving and driven members. The measuring mechanism of which the piston Z is a part will accordingly measure and indicate or record the energy transmitted from the driving to the driven member.
In applying dynamometers of the type hereinbefore referred to to machines of'di'fferent power consumption, it has been necessary to employ cylinders and pistons of different sectional areas between the driving and driven members. This difficulty and expense is avoided by the present invention, as it is only necessary to "adjust the abutment f in "the appropriate aperture (Z to correspond with the power consumption of the particular machine to which the dynamome-ter is applied. This adjustment enables the same mechanism to be applied to machines the power consumption of which may be considerably varied.
I claim:
1. In apparatus for measuring the energy transmitted from a driving member to a driven member, a lever pivotally mounted 011 one of said members, an abutment carried by the other member and adjustable to different radial distances from the axis thereof, said abutment'cooperating with one arm of said lever, and a part cooperative Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressingi the Commissioner of Patent,

with the other arm of said lever for transmitting energy therefrom to a measurlng device.
2. In apparatus for measuring the energy transmitted from a driving member to a shaft, a lever pivotally mounted on the shaft and having one of its arms movable axially of the shaft and its other arm movable in a substantially circumferential direction, an
abutment carried by the driving member.
and cooperative with the circumferentially V driving pulley and carrying a radially adjustable abutment, said abutment adapted.
to engage one of the arms of said bell crank lever, the shaft having an axial bore, a displaceable piston actuating rod mountedin said bore, the shaft also having a radially cut recess at the end of said here, the other arm of said bell crank adapted to project into said recess and act against said piston actuating rod.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
