Abstract
1523380 Measuring wear and friction; measuring torque SPETSIAL KONSTRUKT BJURO PO RAZRABOTKE AVTOMATICHE SREDSTV IZMERE MASS I PRIBOROV ISPYTATEL TEKHNIKI (SKB IMIT) 18 Oct 1976 43202/76 Headings G1N and G1S A friction and wear testing apparatus comprises a driven spindle 1 having means for mounting a test piece 11 at one end, a hollow shaft 25 aligned with the spindle and containing a co-axial rod 34 moveable axially relative to it. The rod carries a disc 37 for mounting other test pieces 14 and means 16 are provided for urging the rod 34 towards the spindle 1 to press the test pieces together, the disc being mounted on the rod by a self aligning joint 36, and means 42 connecting the disc and hollow shaft to permit axial movement between them and transmission of friction torque. As described, the rod 34 is advanced by a piston 22 in a cylinder bearing against a rod 24 which engages the rod 34 through a ball joint 35. The disc 37 has apertures for collets 44 at various radii, Figs 2, 8, the collets and specimens 14 being locked in position by rods 45 which are radially adjustable by handwheels 43. Cooling water ducts K, K, are provided. An annulus 38 is secured by a rigid 41 or resilient 39, 40 connection, according to whether as in the latter case, it is desired to even out oscillatory variations in friction load, to the disc 37 and is connected by leaf-spring or cable connections 42 see also Figs. 4-7 (not shown) to a flange 27 on the shaft 25 so as to allow relative axial movement. An arm secured to the shaft 25 transmits force to a torque measuring device 15 as described later. In operation, the rod 34 is urged to force the specimens 14 against the specimen 11 being rotated by the shaft 5. Friction torque is transmitted by the disc 37, shaft 25 and arm 28 to the device 15. The shaft 1 drives another shaft 7 through a worm, the shaft 7 having a tachometer 8 at one end and a crank 9 at the other, the latter being used for tests involving oscillation between specimens as described below. The apparatus may also be used for testing annular specimens and "shaft and sleeve" test pieces. For the latter, a housing 52, Fig. 13 is attached to the disc 37 and a flange 56 to the spindle 1, the flange 56 being on a shaft 55 on which one specimen 50 is mounted while the "sleeve" specimen 51 is mounted in a member 58 and urged against the specimen 50 by piston means 61 instead of the means 16 in the earlier described arrangement. For oscillatory tests, the housing 52 may be mounted directly on the frame 12 and the shaft 5 5 connected for oscillation to the crank 9. Torque measuring device Fig. 3 The spindle subject to torque has a lever 28 secured to it, the lever carrying an adjustable radius stop which engages a resilient element 31 of the torque gauge 15.
