Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BRADBURY, OF BERLIN, ASSIGNOR TO HART MANU FACTURDTG'COMPANY, OF KENSINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,567, dated November 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BRADBURY, of Berlin, in the county oi H artford and State of Gonnecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs, of which the following is a specification: j
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front elevation of a pair of tongs embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, with the side cap removed to better show the parts; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the same through the center of the joint; Fig. 4, a similar view, with the legs and pin removed; and Fig. 5, a side view ofthe inside of the cap, which is removed from Fig. 2.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction and combina-tion of the parts which form the joint and secure the fast leg to the handle, as hereafter described.
The pans or jams on the ends of the legs are not shown in the drawing. These may be made for either brass or coal-tongs,'as desired.
The handle A is of cast metal, and may be made of any pleasing design. The main portion of the head B is cast on the end of the handle A, and forms a part of the same. In the head B is a circular recess or socket, C, Fig. 4, the walls of which socket are provided with notches al a; a cap, D, having a projection, b, Figs. 1 and 3, of the same form as the socket O and notches a af, and extending into them, thus completing the head B, and leaving the circular socket ofthe proper length, Figs. 3 and 4., to receive the joint-end o of both the legs E E. The joint-ends c oi' the legs E E are of circular form,
and of a size that will lill the socket C, as shown in Fig. 2. The notch a is of a width equal to the diameter of the legs E E, so that theleg which projects through said notch fills thc socket mand notch, and becomes the fast leg. The notch a is wider, so as to allow the leg projecting thereat to swing upon its pivot for the purpose of opening and closing the tongs.
The cap D is placed over the joint of the legs, with the projection bin the socket C and notches a a. The said projection should be the thickest, or provided with a small ledge on the side which enters the small notch et, and thereby come in contact with and press on the fast leg, when the cap D is secured by heading the end oi' the pin d. The relative thickness of the projection b and cap D is indicated by broken lines in Fig. 3, and also shown at Fig. l.
By my invention I am enabled to produce the complete handle and head of cast metal without soldering or brazing, and, therefore, at a small cost. The joint, although cheap, is believed to be secured with more than ordinary iirmnessless liable to become detached or to allow of a sidewise movement of the legs.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the handle A, head B, socket C, notches ct a', legs E E, cap D, and projection b, the whole combined and operating together to produce a cheap and superior tongsjoint, substantially as described.
