To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, LOUIS M. PLANSOEN, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands and a residentof Garfield, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have in vented a new and Improved Controlling and Alarm Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to paper-making machines of the F'ourdrinier type, and its object is to provide a new and improvedcontrolling and alarm device located at the delivery end of the endless wire screen or apron and arranged to shift the delivery end of the screen back to normal position in case of a deflection and at the same time" sound an alarm for the attendant to manipulate the usual hand guide roll at the other end of the machine.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is'made of means controlled by the, screen and connected with a guide roller over which passes the screen to move the guide roller and the screen bodily in a trans verse and longitudinal direction on a deflection of the screen.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the .controlling and alarm device as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same on the line l-d of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation of a portion of the shifting means for the guide roller bearing; Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the toothed wheel and double pawl for actuating the toothed wheel; Fig. 7 is an enlarged face view of one of the guides for the circuit closing rods, the insulation being shown in sectionyFig. 8 is a diagrammatic view of the electric alarm; and Fig. 9 is a side elevation of a modified form of the electric alarm.
The endless wire screen or apron A of usual construction is mounted to travel in the direction of the arrow 6/ and at its delivery end passes around the usual roll B, and near the said delivery end it passes over a guide roller C. The shaft C of this guide roller C is journaled at each end in a bearh1g1) mounted to slide on a guideway E formed on a bracket E attached to the main frame F of the F ourdrinier machine and disposed obliquely relatively to the axis of the guide roller C, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. In the bearing D is mounted to turn a nut G (see Fig. 5) screwing on a screw rod H attached at its ends on arms E forming part of the bracket E. On the nut G is secured or formed a bevel gear wheel G in mesh with a bevel gearwheel I attached to or formed integrally on the back of a wheel I having internal teeth P, as plainly illustrated in the drawings.
The teeth I of the wheel I are adapted to be engaged by either end of a double pawl J having a pivot J journaled in an arm K mounted to swing loosely on a stud K secured to the 'front of the bearing D and on which stud K turns loosely the wheel I (see Fig. 4). The arm K is pivotally connected by a link L with a crank pin L held on the end of the shaft C of the guide roller 0 so that when the latter is rotated the crank pin L and the link L impart a continuous rocking motion to the arm K. Now as longas the pawl J is in the normal inactive position shown in Fig. 2, that is, with both ends out of engagement with the teeth P, then the wheel I remains at a standstill, but when the pawl J is tilted in either direction the then uppermost end engages the teeth I to turn the wheel I in the corresponding direction. The rotary motion of the wheel I is trans mitted by the gear wheels I and G to the nut G screwing on the rod H and held in the bearing D so that the latter is shifted on the guideway E either to the left or to the right according to the direction in which the wheel I is turned at the time.
The tilting of the pawl J is controlled by the screen or apron A 011 the deflection thereof in alateral direction, and for this purpose the following arrangement is made: On the pivot J of the pawl J is secured a downwardly extending arm N in the lower end of which is mounted to turn an eye N through which extends loosely a rod 0 provided on opposite sides of the eye N with springs O, O abutting against collars 0 attached to the rod 0. The rod 0 is slightly inclined and its upper end is provided with a screw thread on which screw nuts 0, O engaging opposite sides of a bell crank lever P fulcrumed on the pivot P attached to the armE of the bracket E. It is well known that in case the screen or apron A runs oil the end of the roll B it is wrinkled or doubled up or otherwise injured and hence its usefulness is practically destroyed. It is also well known that the attendant of a Fourdrinier machine is mostly occupied with the general supervision of the machine and cannot continually watch the correct or incorrect running of the screen or apron A, but when the alarm T is sounded as above described then the attendant can quickly manipulate the hand guide roll to readjust the screen or apron A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A controlling device for the guide roller of a screen, comprising shifting means for the said guide roller to move the latter laterally and longitudinally on a deflection of the screen, a normally inactive actuating means for actuating the shifting means, and means controlled by the screen and connectcd with the said actuating means to render the latter "active for shifting the guide roller.
A controlling device, comprising a guide roller over which passes a screen, a bearing in which the said roller is journaled, a guideway for the said bearing to slide on and arranged obliquelv to the axis of the guide roller, a shifting device for shifting the said bearing on the guideway, whereby the roller will be moved laterally and longitudinally, a driving device for the said shifting device and having a normally inactive member driven continuously from the said guide roller, and a connecting device connecting the screen with the said member to render the latter active on a deflection of the screen.

In a bination of an endless traveling screen, a guide roller over which passes the screen, a bearing for the guide roller, a guideway for the bearing to slide on and arrange obliquely relatively to the axis of the guide roller, a nut turning in the said bearing and provided with a gear wheel, a screw rod mounted to turn and screwing in, the said nut, a toothed wheel mounted on the said bearing and having a bevel gear wheel in mesh with the bevel gear wheel on the nut, a rock arm carrying a double pawl adapted to engage the said toothed wheel to turn the latter in either direction, a crank connection between the said rock arm and the guide roller to rock the said arm continually, means connected with the said pawl and with the said screen to throw the pawl into engagement with the toothed wheel on a deflection or" the screen, and an electric alarm having two circuit closers controlled by the said toothed wheel to sound an alarm on a deflection of the screen.
6. In a paper-making machine, the combination of an endless traveling screen, a guide roller over which passes the screen, a bearing for the guide roller, a guideway for the bearing to slide on and arranged obliquely relatively to the axis of the guide roller, a nut'turning in the said bearing and provided with a gear wheel, a screw rod mounted to turn and screwing in the said nut, a toothed wheel mounted on the said bearing and having a bevel gear wheel in mesh with the bevel gear wheel on the nut, a rock arm carrying a double pawl adapted to engage the said toothed wheel to turn the latter in either direction, a crank connection between the said rock arm and the guide roller to rock the said arm continually, a pawl arm on the pivot of the said pawl, an eye mounted to turn on the said pawl arm, a rod having a sliding engagement with the said eye, springs on the said rod and pressing on opposite sides of the paper-making machine, the comeye, a bell crank lever connected with the said rod, a shifting bar connected With the said hell crank lever and provided with lugs engaging the edges of the screen to cause the screen to move the shifting bar on a deflection of the screen, spring-pressed circuit closing rods on opposite sides of the said toothed Wheel and adapted to be engaged by the toothed Wheel, and an electric alarm connected with the said circuit clos- 10 mg rods.
