Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 2, 1911.
Serial No. 611,855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. OULV'ER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spinning-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to spinning machines, and more especially to the lifter motion forming a part of such machines.
It comprehends primarily, an improved lifter motion operatively connected in a particular manner with the builder motion and supported by a bracket so constructed as to provide for its adjustment both vertically and horizontally, whereby the position of the lifter rods and their associated guide eyes and separators may be varied at will.
A structural embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved machine, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the supporting bracket, and the parts directly associated with the same, Figs. 4: and 5 are horizontal sections taken, respectively, on the lines 44 and 55 of Fig. 3.
In said drawings, 1 indicates, generally, the frame of the machine, 2 the roll mechanism, and 3 the series of bobbins mounted on the revolving spindles 4. These parts may be of any conventional or preferred description.
The vertical lifter rods 5, of which, however, one only is shown, are slidably mounted in bearings formed in the laterally projecting upper and lower horizontal guide arms 6 and 7 of brackets 8 and carry at their upper ends the guide eyes 9 and separators 10. These brackets are so supported as to permit their adjustment both vertically and horizontally thereby providing for variation of the positionof the lifter rods and the eyes and separators as well, relative to the bobbins. To attain this adjustment, the bracket is formed at its upper end with a vertical extension 11 provided with a longitudinal slot 12 which intersects at right angles the horizontal slot 13 formed in the inwardly projecting arm 14 of an angle bracket 15 secured to the top frame rail, the extension 11 and arm 14 being connected by a bolt 16, or the like, passed through said slots. There is also formed in the lower arm 7 of the adjustable bracket 8 a bearing for a horizontally disposed rock shaft 17 which extends from end to end of the machine and has secured to it a lever arm or lever 18 for each of the brackets 8 used. One of said levers is connected at its outer end by means of a chain 19, with the arm 20 mounted on the shaft 29 of the builder motion. Lever 18 is further provided with a centrally located upstanding arm 24 whose upper end is connected to that of a chain, cable or other flexible element 25 which is trained over a pulley 26 revolubly mounted in a slot 27 formed in the upper bracket arm 6, said lever being offset laterally intermediate its end so as to dispose its arm 24 in proper position for such connection. The lower end of the flexible element 25 is fastened to a clamp 28 rigidly attached to the lifter rod, said clamp being designed to rest upon the lower bracket arm 7 so as to limit the clownward movement of the lifter rod. By varying the position of said clamp upon said rod, the normal position of the lifter rod may be correspondingly changed.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that when the builder motion is' in operation, the lifter rod will reciprocate vertically through the intermediary of the lever 18 and the arm 24 which are connected with the clamp 28 by the flexible element 25, and also with the arm 20 by the chain 19, the position of said clamp on said rod determining the extent of downward movement of the latter, and, in consequence, the normal position of the eyes and separators relative to the bobbins. The adjustable bracket 8 may also be raised and lowered, and shifted toward and from said bobbins, to produce similar results.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent;-
1. In a spinning machine, the combination of a guide bracket, a lifter rod movable therein, a stop member attached to said rod for coaction with said bracket to determine the normal position of the rod, a flexible element connected at one end directly to said member, a pulley carried by said bracket and having said element trained thereover, a builder motion, and connections between the other end of said element and Patented Jan. 2, 1912. r
said builder motion for reciprocating said rod.
2. In a spinning machine, the combination of a guide bracket, a lifter rod movable therein, a member attached to said rod, a flexible element connected at one end directly to said member, a rocking lever to which the other end of said element is connected, a builder motion, and connections between said builder motion and said lever for rocking the latter.
3. In a spinning machine, the combination of a bracket provided with a pair of guide arms, a reciprocatory lifter rod movable in said arms, a member adjustable longitudinally of said rod and arranged to con tact with one of said arms, for limiting the movement of said rod in one direction, a pulley carried by the other arm, a flexible element trained .over said pulley and secured at one end to said member, a builder motion, and connections between the builder motion and the opposite end of said element.
4:. In a spinning machine, the combination of a bracket provided with a pair of guide arms, a reciprocatory lifter rod movable in said arms, a member attached to said rod and arranged to contact with one of said arms for limiting the movement of said rod in one direction, a pulley carried by the other arm, a flexible element trained over said pulley and secured at one end to said member, a rocking member having an arm to which the other end of said element is connected, and means for rocking the second-named member.
5. In a spinning machine, the combination of a bracket provided with a pair of guide arms, a reciprocatory lifter rod movable in said arms, a member attached to said rod and arranged to contact with one of said arms for limiting the movement of said rod in one direction, a pulley carried by the other arm, a flexible element trained over said pulley and secured at one end to said member, a rocking member having an arm to which the other end of said element is connected, a builder motion, and connections between the builder motion and the second-named member for rocking the latter.
6. In a spinning machine, the combination of a guide bracket, a lifter rod slidable therein, a member secured to said rod, a flexible element connected at one end to said member, a rocking lever having an arm to which the other end of said element is connected, a builder motion, and connections between said lever and said builder motion for operating the former from the latter.
