PATENT OEEIGE.
WILLIAM SKWORLEY, OF ARCOLA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,559, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM S. WoELEY, of Arcola, in the county of Douglas and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scraper, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making apart of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a road-scraper, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a plan view of my road-scraper. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the revolving portion of the same. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of my roadscraper.
A represents the revolving bottom, provided at each end with a wheel, B, constructed substantially in the elliptic form shown in Fig. l. rlhese wheels are at both ends provided with spikes L a, to catch in the ground and cause the wheels and bottom to revolve, when desired. The bottom A has on each side, at opposite edges, a metal strip, b, to prevent wear on the bottom itself. The wheels B B are on the inwardly-turned ends of a rod, C, the center of which is attached to the tongue D. The two ends of the rod C are, in front of the wheels B B, braced by a bar, E.
To the upper side of the tongue D is attached a wooden or metal spring-bar, G, the rear end of which is, by a rubber band, d, connected with a lever, H. This lever H is pivoted to the side of the tongue D, and is, on its under side, provided with a double catch, c, that will hold the revolving bottom in proper position either to load or level, by the operator pressing down upon the lever. Ona/11e bottom A are metal plates f, to prevent wear from the catch c. To the lever H is pivoted a bar, to be used, if necessary, in holding the scraper in position when loading. On the inner sides of the wheels B B are placed rollers h h, so that the loaded scraper may be drawn much easier.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the bottom A with strips b b and plates ff, and the wheels B B with spikes a, a and rollers l1l h, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with the above, the rod C, tongue D, brace E, spring G, rubber d, lever H, and double catch e, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my 'hand this 27th day ofl July,
WILLIAM S. WORLEY.
