SHIP-TURBINE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Application iled September 11, 1915. Serial No. 50,242.
To'aZZfwwm it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDRIK LJUNG- sTRM, engineer, a subject of the Kin of Sweden, residing at Finspong, Sweden, ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relatin to 'Ship-Turbines, of which the following 1s a specification.
In ship turbines -where the propeller` shafts are driven through the agency of spur gearing 'it is a matter of the greatest importance that the placing of the turbine, condenser and gearing should be effected in such a manner as to allow the disposable space to be made use of in the most eiicient way..
The present invention refers to turbines of the double rotation type and has for its object to place the three said parts so that they occupy an exceedingly small space. The turbine is in effecting this given so high a position that the condenser may be placed under the same, besides which the condenser and the turbine casing are placed between the two gearings from the two turbine shafts. The condenser or the inlet of the same is preferably7 passed at this point by the intermediate shaft joinin the two spur wheels mounted on each si e of the condenser.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a turbine embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 represents a,long1tudina1, central, vertical section of the same. .Y Y
a is the turbine casing of .a double rotation turbine and b are the two shafts of the same, supporting pinions, meshing with a greater pinion, inclosed in the wheel casings c c and arranged under the shafts 6 b and the wheels mounted upon the latter.
The number of wheels of one gearing is odd, that of the` other even, whereby the'common shaft al will be driven in the same direction by the two turbine shafts b and b. Under the turbine casing athe condenser e is arranged between the two greater spur wheels, mounted in the wheel casing 0 c and arranged in such a way that its longitudinal axis is perpendicular to the turbine shafts b b or the intermediate shaft d. The latter passes through the inlet pipe f, joining the turbine casing a to the condenser e.
Either the shaft maybe the propeller shaft or there may if necessary be mounted a further gearing (or more) between this shaft g and the propeller shaft L.
Claims:
1. In combination with a turbine-casing, a condenser mounted thereunder, a. pair of turbine shafts, a third shaft driven by these turbine shafts, and two sets of gearing between said turbine shafts and this third shaft, said sets of gearing being arranged with the condenser and turbine casing between them..
2. In combination with a turbine-casing a condenser mounted thereunder, a pair of turbine shafts, a third shaft driven by these turbine shafts and passing through a tubular part connected to said condenser, and two sets of gearin between said turbine shafts and this thir shaft, vsaid sets of gearing being arranged with the condenser and turbine-casing between them.
In testimony whereofl I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EREDRIK LJUNGSTRM.
