SPEED-GOVERNOR.
Application filed March 27, 1913.
eration of the inlet valve or valve mechanism of an engine or other fluid operated apparatus through the agency of a pressure responsive motor.
A further object is to produce a speed responsive governing dev1ce wh1ch forms a part of or is included in a fluid circulatory system and controls the delivery of fluid to the system and the pressure of the fluid within the system.
Other objects and advantages as well as the novel details of construction will appear hereinafter, it being understood that changes in proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
The drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof is a sectional view of an enibodiment of my inventionand discloses a speed responsive device, capable of being driven by the apparatus to be governed, which controls the delivery of fluid from a source of fluid under pressure to a pressure chamber from which fluid is delivered to the motor which controls the operation of the inlet valve or valves of the apparatus to be governed. The arrangement of the governing device is such that the inlet valve or valves of the apparatus to be governed will be opened as the speed of the apparatus decreases in response to an increase in load and Specification of Letters Patent.
. The spindle element 4 is lngs l0 and 11, the bearing 11 being con-' Patented Nov. 114i, rare. Serial No. 757,126.
not longitudinal movement; the other desig nated by the numeral 5 having both longitudinal and rotatable movement. The part 4 is connected to the part 5 by links 6 and 6', 7 and 7 and the governor weights 8 and 9.
rotatable in bearnected to a perforate web governor casing 13. element 4 is in the form of a housing 14: which constitutes a chamber fora suitable fluid, as for example oil, and communicating with this chamber is a perforate tube 15 exhausting into a chamber 16 communicating with a pipe 17 which may lead to a valve operating mechanism, as for example, an oil relay (not shown). One 'end of the tube 15 1s conical and on the end of the conical portion of the tube is a spring seat 18 opposite a similar spring seat 19 between which spring seats, is a coil spring 20. In the upper portion of the element 4: is a bore or channel 21 in which is a ported bush 22. lVithin the bore 21 and connected to the element 5 is a ported valve 23. This valve 12 secured in the has connected to it a conical end 21L which bears upon the spring seat 19.
By reference to the figure it will be observed that the spindle element 5, the valve 23 and the removable end 24 are tubular, the end 24 being partitioned from the valve 23 by plug 25. At the upper end of the spindle element 5 are inlet openings 26 which communicate with a suitable source of oil supply through a pipe 27 in which a valve 28 is conventionally shown. Oil may enter the hollow element 5 and pass into the valve 23 and for lubricating purposes a portion of it may pass through the ports 29 into the channels 30 so as to lubricate the bearing 11.
It is to be understood that the throttle valve of a steam engine, particularly for turbines,-is normally open so that the hand valve in the steam supply line may be used for starting.
Assuming that the governor is connected up to a turbine when steam is admitted to the turbine and the turbine starts, the lay shaft 1 will start to turn imparting motion through the gear 3 to the governor spindle. The oil admitted through the pipe 27 into Part of the spindle y the spindle element will escape through the ports 31 and 32 as soon as the governor weights 8 and 9 move out. The oil will pass into the chamber 33 through chamber let, pipe 15, chamber 16, through pipe 17 to the oil relay to close the inlet valve a sufficient amount to bring the engine to the proper speed. If the load becomes light, the governor balls 8 and 9 will again fly out and admit more oil through the ports 31, 32 and 33 into chamber 14, pipe 15, chamber 16, and pipe 17 to close the inlet valve still further. Should the load become heavy, the governor weights 8 and 9 will move in toward the spindle and under the action of the spring 20 the chamber l l will be placed in communication with the port 34 through the ports 35 and 36 because the hollow end 24 is provided with openings 37 thus oil will be exhausted from the chamber 14 into the casing 13 where it may be returned to the oil system or be drawn off through the outlet 38.
It will be observed that the port 34: ex-
hausts into the casing 13 at a point where the teeth of the gears 2 and 3 mesh so that said gears will be lubricated. For convenience, the lower element 4 of the spindle is made of two parts so that the gear 3 is a split gear which, may be held together by the taper-bolts 39 and the nuts 40 whereby the lower element 4 of the spindle may be taken apart for the purpose of inspection and repairs to the spring and its complementary parts. The spindle element at is shown as being provided with a gear 41 meshing with a complementary gear 42, these gears 41 and 42 constituting the low pressure oil pump for a lubricating system which does not form a part of this inven-' tion.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of operation of my invention together, with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out in other ways.

6. A governing device comprising an or-' from a source of supply. and from which it is delivered through a continually open delivery port, means subjected to the pressure within said chamber for controlling the delivery of liquid to said chamber and speed responsive means for actuating said last mentioned means.

8. A governing device included in a liquid circulatory system, comprising a pressure chamber, to which liquid is delivered from a source of supply and from.-
which it is discharged and means responsive to the speed of the device to be governed for controlling the delivery of liquid to said chamber and the discharge of liquid from the chamber through a relief port,
