To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES F. HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at 3031i Easton avenue, in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in Garters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in the construction of garment supporters,

more especially to garters of the typev wherein a band of flexible or elastic material is designed to encircle the leg.

ne of the objects of the present invention is to provide a device having an improved means forformin'g'the garment attaching structure.

With the above and several other objects inview, my invention relates to the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be morev particularly described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein:

The type of supporter iilustrated in the accompanying drawing embodies broadly a leg encircling band l preferably of elastic or flexible material, to which the garment attaching member 2 is secured. In the present invention this attaching member 2 is preferably formed of celluloidor similar non-rusting material and comprises a slightly curved plate to which the attaching means proper is secured. @ne portion of the attaching means is formed integrally with the plate 2, in fact is merely a continuation ofsaid plate and has a keyhole slot 3 formed therein as is common in devices of this character. i

For cooperation with this keyhole slot I provide a button 4t carried by a suitable plate 5. In forming this button, I provide the blank shown in the accompanying drawing which consists of theplate 5 havinga tongue G extending therefrom, the intermediate portionv of said tongue being enlarged as vshown at 7 to form the head of said button 4. vWhen the blank has'been stamped in the proper form, the tongue 6 is bent at the point of its connection with the plate 5 into a plane at right angles thereto, the enlarged portion 7 being then bent over the plate 5 substantially parallel thereto. The :remainingv portion of the tongue which extends beyond the enlarged portion 7 is then bent downwardly at right angles to the plate and into engagement therewith. The portions of the tongue on each side of the enlarged portion 7 form the neck of said button 4 and space said enlarged portion from the plate 5. This lastmentioned end of the tongue 6 is slightly enlarged at its extremity as shown at 8, and when this is bent downwardly it engages a notch 9 formed in one wall of a slot 10 in the plate 5, said notch 9 having inclined end walls to receive and retain the enlarged portion 8. After the blank has been bent into the above described shape, it is ready to be attached to the garment attaching member. This may be accomplished by any preferred means, that shown consisting in passing a tape ll through the slot 10 and through an additional slot l2 in the upper portion of the plate 2. This tape thus forms a tab for flexibly connecting said plate 5 with its button to the other portion of the garment attaching means in position to engage said keyhole slot 8. A gripping ring 13 of yieldable material also preferably surrounds the button 4i to enable it to more securely hold the hose or other garment.

The plate 2 of the garment attaching member is provided in addition to the slot 1Q with the slots 14 and 15 disposed substantially at right angles to said slot 12 and are adapted to receive the leg encircling band l. One end of the flexible or elastic band l is inserted through the slot l5 from the front to the rear face of the member and is then passed across said rear face and insertedV through the slot 14 in the saine direction. The arrangement of the band before tightening the same is clearly shown in one of the figures of the drawing. When the opposite end of the band is pulled tight, the portion thereof extending over the rear face of the pla-te 2 clamps the first-mentioned end between it and the said plate, thus holding the band in adjusted position without the aid of stitching or other fastening means other than that described. It is obvious that by loosening the band and drawing on the proper por-. tion, the length thereof may be increased oi'l decreased as desired. The free end of the flexible band l carries ajsuitablefastening member 17 which is adapted to be engaged with the plate 2 when the garter is to be diS- posed around the leg of the wearer. InV the rear View of the device, it will be readily noted that this leg encircling band and the tab 1l covers a considerable portion of the Vgar- Y ment -attaching member and allows very little of it to touch the wearer, and as all parts of the device including the band and the tab are of a non-rusting material, the wearerwill not be troubled by that part which comes in 'contact withl his flesh.
