To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. RosNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bufialo, in the county of Erieand State of New York, have invented a new and useful VVork-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
By way of explanation it may be stated that when a shaft, billet or other object is operated upon by a steam hammer, a considerable force of operators is required in order to hold the shaft or billet in place under the hammer, and to move the shaft or billet with respect to the hammer, as the forging operation continues.
The present invention aims to provide a novel means whereby the shaft, billet or other object may beheld properly with respect to a forging hammer and be moved with respect to the hammer. r l
The objects of the present invention can be understood best when considered in connection with a general description of the machine herein disclosed.
I In the present invention, a plurality of trucks are mounted to move along a track, so that the work to be forged may be advanced and retracted with respect to the forging hammer and be shifted from the furnace to the hammer. The trucks support a main frame and a mechanism is provided whereby the main frame may be raised and lowered with respect to the trucks. A carriage is mounted to move along the main frame and on the carriage a turntable is journaled for rotation. The turntable carries a bearing structure which is adapted to be tilted in 'a vertical plane and in the bearing structure, a work support is journaled for rotation. The rotatable work support carries movable grip; means is provided for moving the main frame and the trucks along the tracks, a means being provided whereby the carriage may be moved with respect to the main frame. A mechanism is provided for rotating the turntable and there is a means whereby the bearing structure may be tilted in a vertical plane.

In carrying out the present invention there is provided a main frame 1. Located adjacent the corners of the main frame 1 are trucks 2 carrying wheels 3 adapted to traverse. tracks 4. Each truck 2 embodies a fixed platform 5, about which is mounted to move vertically, a compression member 6 in the form of a bar, the trucks 2 being recessed toreceive the compression members 6, so that the compression members have a vertical movement only. Compression springs 7 are interposed beneath the compression members 6 and the platforms 5 and support the compression members yieldingly. Projecting downwardly from the main frame 1 are guide pins 8 slidably received in the compression members 6 and in the platforms 5, the guide pins 8 passing through the springs 7 and serving to hold the same 111 screws 9 are beveled pinions 12 meshing into beveled pinions 1% in the ends of shaft-s15 journaled in bearings 16 on the main frame 1, and best disclosed in Fig. 1. Adjacent one end of the main frame 1 the shafts 15 carry beveled pinions 17 meshing into beveled pinions 18 on the ends of a transverse shaft .19 journaled in the main frame 1.
Fixed to the shaft 19 is a gear wheel 20 meshing into a pinion 21 driven by a motor 22 on the main frame 1. The trucks 2 at one end of the main framel are provided with motors 23 connected by means of sprocket chains 24: and sprocket wheels 25, or in any other suitable manner, with certain of the wheels of the said trucks.
,Itwill now be understood that when the motor 22 is in operation, rotation will be imparted to the shaft 19 through the pinion 21 and the gear wheel 20. By means of the beveled pinions 18 and 17, the shafts 15 will be rotated from the shaft 19. WVhen the shafts 15 are rotated, the beveled pinions 14 and 12 will rotate the screws 9 and because the screws 9 are threaded into the compression members 6, the main frame 1 may be raised and lowered bodily with respect to the trucks 2. At this point it may be noted that the members 6 are yieldably supported on the springs 7, the construction being such thatthe main frame 1 is resiliently upheld and is well adapted to accommodate the strains imposed thereon due to the blows of the forging hammer upon the work, it being understood that the work which is to be forged is indirectly carried by the main frame 1.

Disposed above the carriage 28 is a turntable 33, the turntable and the carriage 28 being provided with cooperating ball races 34; receiving balls 35 whereon the turntable is anti-frictionally supported for rotation with'respect to the carriage. The carriage 28 is provided with a shaft 36 on which the turntable 33 is rotatable, the shaft constituting a means for holding down the turntable so that the same will not tilt under the weight of the work which is being forged. The turntable 33 may be provided with a ring 500 inter-engaged rotatably with the ball-race of the carriage 28. Either the shaft 36 or the ring 500 may be used, one to the exclusion of the other. The ball race of the carriage 28 is circumscribed by a gear 37 into which meshes a pinion 38 secured to a shaft 39 journaled in the turntable and provided with a beveled gear wheel 40 meshing into a beveled pinion 41 constituting a part of a motor 4-2 carried by the turntable 33.

ln order to counterpoise the turntable 33 against the weight of the material which is being forged, a weight 57 is slidably mounted on the table. Any suitable means may be provided for shifting the weight 57, but in the present embodiment of the invention, the weight is provided with a depending lug 58 into which is threaded a hand screw 59 held against rotation in the turntable.
The invention comprises a vertically tiltable bearing structure carried by the turntable 33. This bearing structure embodies a foot block 43 having trunnions 14 mounted to rcck in bearings 15 carried by the turntable 33. The foot block 43 is bridged across by a top strap 4:6. Fixed to and upstanding from the turntable 33 are standards 37 having inclined ends 48 provided with arcuate slots 19 the centers of which are the trun- Disposed between the standards 47 is a ring 50 having pins 51 adapted to move in the slots -19 which are formed in the Pivotally assembled with the pins 51 are links 52 pivoted to the upper ends of piston rods 53 constituting parts of engines 5% mounted on the turntable 33, the engines being operated by compressed air, steam, or in any other suitable manner. The engines 54 are provided with suitable reversing mechanisms 55, connected across the machine by a transverse pipe 56 appearing most clearly in Fig. 6. Fluid pressure is applied to the reversing mechanisms 55 by a pipe 62 which is connected with a tube 63 leading to a source of fluid pressure (not shown).
A tubular work support 60 is journaled for rotation in the tiltable bearing structure comprising on the one hand the block 43 and the top strip 46, and upon the other hand the ring 50. This work support will be described in detail hereinafter, but is alluded to briefly at this place, in order that the function of the vertically tiltable bearing structure may be made manifest.
Fluid pressure may be conducted into either the upper or lower ends of the cylinders of the engines 54, by means of the reversing mechanisms 55, the piston rods 53 in this manner being moved downwardly or upwardly. -When the piston rods 53 are actuated, the links 52 through the instrumentality of the pins 51 cause the ring 50 to be raised and lowered, thus bringing about a vertical tilting of the work support 60, the pins sliding in the slots 49 of the standards 47.
The work support is adapted to be rotated in the tiltable bearing structure above described, and in this connection it may be observed that by means of anti-friction elements 61., the work support is mounted to rotate freely in the bearing structure. The work support 60 is circumscribed by a gear 64 into which meshes a pinion 65 carried by a shaft 66 journaled in the foot block 43 and in a. bracket 67 carried by the foot block. Mounted to swing on the shaft 66 is a lever 68 carrying a double ended pawl 69, either end of which may be held in operative relation with the pinion 65 by means of a spring 70, the construction under consideration being common and well known. Pivoted to the lever 68 is a link 71 which in its turn is pivoted to the upper end of a piston rod 72 constituting a part of an engine 73 mounted on the turntable 33. The reversing mechanism for the engine 73 appears at 74 and fluid pressure is supplied thereto from the pipe 62.
By a proper manipulation of the reversing mechanism 74, the piston rod 72 may be made to reciprocate, whereupon the link 71 will impart a swinging movement to the lever 68. The pawl 69 which is carried by the lever engages with the pinion 65 and rotates the pinion, the pinion 65 meshing into the gear 64 and causing a rotation of the work support 60. The work support 60 may be rotated in opposite directions by causing the respective ends of the pawl 69 to coact with the pinion 65.
A means is provided whereby the work support 60 may be held in any position to which it has been rotated, and with this end in view, the work support is surrounded by a brake strap 75, one end of which is fixed'at 7 6 to the foot block 43, the other end of the brake strap terminating in a loop 77 coacting with an eccentric 78 supported for swinging movement on the bracket 67 and provided with an operating lever 79. The rotatable tubular work support 60 is provided with a tapered bore 80 in which are located inclined guides 81 which slope toward the aXis of the support as they eX- tend inwardly. the guides 81 are grips 82 adapted to engage the work which is to be forged, the inner ends of the grips 82 being detachably assembled as indicated at 83 in any desired manner, with piston rods 84 constituting a part of engines 85 located within the work support 60 and secured thereto, the engines 85 being operatively connected by means of fluid pressure pipes 86, a reversing mechanism 87 being provided, whereby all of the engines may be controlled Fluid pressure is supplied to the reversing mechanism 87 by means of a tube 88.
The grips 82 which hold the work may be advanced and retracted by a proper manipulation of the reversing mechanism 87 and, because the guides 81 which receive the grips are inclined. as hereinbefore stated, it is obvious that when the grips are retracted the work will be engaged and held, the work being released when the grips are advanced.
The operation of the device has been dealt with hereinbefore, step-by-step, in connection with the various component mechanisms. A brief rsum of the operation of the structure may profitably be given at this point.
Through the instrumentality of the engines 85, the grips 82 may be advanced and retracted, to cause the same to hold and to release the work which is to be forged. The engine 73 driving the pinion 65 and the gear 64 causes the work support 60 to rotate, thereby presenting successive portions of the article to be forged, to the action of the forging hammer. The support 60 may be tilted vertically by operating the engines 54, the engines, through the medium of the links 52 and the ring 50, swinging the work support 60 about an axis which is repre sented by the trunnions .44. The turntable 43, together with the work support 60 may be rotated with respect to a vertical axis by means of the motor 42, the shaft 39, the pinion 38, the gear 37 and attendant parts. The work support'60, the turntable 33 and the carriage 28 may be moved along the main frame 1 by the motor 29, the shaft 30, the pinion 31 and the rack 32, or by any suitable mechanism which is substituted therefor. 'The main frame 1, together with all parts carried thereby is advanced and retracted along the tracks 4 by the motors 23 which drive the wheels of certain of the trucks 2, The Weight 57 may be shifted Mounted to reciprocate in by means of the screw 59. The raising and lowering of the main frame 1 with respect to the trucks 2 is brought about by the motor 22, the shafts 19 and 15 and the screws 9.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1.. In a device for manipulating forgings atruck; a main frame mounted on the truck to move vertically; means for moving the main frame vertically with respect to the truck; a carriage mounted'to move along the frame; means for inoving'the carriage along-the frame; a'turntable rotatable on the carriage; means for rotating the turntable; a counterpoise movable on the turntable; means for moving the counterpoise; a bearing structure vertically tiltable on the turntable; means for tilting the bearing structure; a forging support rotatable in the bearing structure; means for rotating the forging support; and a brake engaging the forging support to limit the rotation thereof.

In a device for manipulating forgings a truck; a main frame mounted on the truck to move vertically;means for moving the main frame vertically with respect to the truck; a carriage mounted to move along the frame; means for moving the carriage along the frame; a turntable rotatable on the carriage; means for rotating the turntable; a bearing structure vertically tiltable on the turntable; means for tilting the bearing structure; a forging support rotatable in'the bearing structure; and means for rotating the forging support.
In adevice for manipulating forgings, a movable main frame; means for advancing and retracting the main frame horizontally; a carriage mounted to move along the main frame; means for moving the carriage along the frame; a turntable rotatable on the carriage; means for rotating the turn table; a bearing structure vertically tiltable on the turntable; means for tilting the bearing structure; a forging support rotatable in the bearing structure, and means for rotating the forging support.

In a device for manipulating forgings, a vertically movable main frame; means for moving the main frame vertically; a carriage mounted to move along the frame; means for moving the carriage along the frame; a turntable rotatable on the carriage; means for rotating the turntable; a bearing structure vertically tiltable on the turntable; means for tilting the bearing structure; a forging support rotatable in the bearing structure; and means for rotating the forging support.

In a device for manipulating forgings, a truck; a main frame mounted on the truck to move vertically; means for moving the main frame vertically with respect to the truck; a carriage mounted to move along the frame; a turntable rotatable on the car riage; a rotatable forging support; means for rotating the forging support; and means for holding the forging support for rotation with respect to the turntable.

In a device for manipulating forgings, a truck; a main frame carried by thertruck; a carriage mounted to move along the frame; means for moving the carriage along the frame; a turntable rotatable on the carriage; a rotatable forging support; means for rotating the forging support; and means for upholding the forging support for rotation with respect to the turntable.

In a device for manipulating forgings a truck; a main frame mounted on the tram: to move vertically; means for moving the main frame vertically with respect to the truck; a carriage mounted to move along the frame; means for moving the carriage along the frame; a turntable rotatable on the carriage: means for rotating the turntable; a bearing structure vertically tiltable on the turntable; means for tilting the bearing structure; and a forging support carried by the bearing structure.

In a device for manipulating forgings, a truck; a main frame carried by the truck; a carriage mounted to move along the main frame; means for moving the carriage alongthe frame; a turntable rotatable on the carriage; means for rotating the turntable; a bearing structure vertically tiltable on the turntable; means for tilting the bearing structure; and a forging support carried by the bearing structure.
11. In a device for manipulating forgings, a rotatable forging support; a vertically tiltable bearing structure wherein the forging support is rotatable; a carriage whereon the support is tiltable; and means for tilting the support.
12. In a device for manipulating forgings, a work support; grips movable on the Work support; engines operatively connected With the grips and carried by the Work support; means for upholding the Work support for Vertical tilting movement; and
' means for upholding the Work support for rotation about a vertical axis.
18. In a device for manipulating forgings, a rotatable Work support; grips carried by the Work support; engines operatively connected with the grips and carried by the Work support; means for holding the Work support for rotation about a ertically tilting axis; means for tilting the support; and means for upholding the support for rotation about a vertical axis.

In a device for manipulating forgings, a vertically tiltable bearing structure; a forging holder rotatable in the bearing structure; means for rotating the holder in the support; an engine operatively connected with said means; mechanism for tilting the bearing structure; an engine operatively connected with said mechanism; and reversing mechanisms for the engine.
15. In a device for manipulating forgings, a truck; a compression member movable With respect to the truck; spring means coacting With the compression member and GEORGE ARTHUR ROSNER.
