CURTAIN-ROD SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14:, 1916.
Application filed April 11, 1916. Serial No. 90,448.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NAPoLnoN DUMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have lnvented new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Rod Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in curtain rods and especially with reference to supporting devices for securing the ends of the rod in place.
The object of this invention is to provide improved devices of this kind which are cheap and simple in construction and by means of which a curtain rod or the like may be readily attached to or removed from a door or window frame or other place where a curtain rod is used.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a curtain rod provided with supports constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail front elevation of one of the supports, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of one of the supports and a plan of one end of the curtain rod and showing the curtain rod secured in the support. Fig. l is a transverse sectional view of the same.
The curtain or other like rod 1 comprises the members 2, 3, which are telescopically connected so that the rod may be lengthened and shortened, at will. At the outer end of each member of the rod is a cap 4 provided with a stud 5. The stud is rectangular in plan and is provided with notches 6 on opposite sides. I also provide a pair of supports 7 for the ends of the rod. Each support is secured on a base plate 8 or escutcheon which has openings 9 for the reception of nails or screws, wherewith to secure the support at one side of a window or door frame or at any place where the rod is to be used. The support has an opening 10 adapted to receive the stud 5. A locking device 11 is slidably mounted in guides 12 on the sides of the support and is movable across one side of the opening 10 and toward and from the opposite side of the opening and is here shown as notched at 13 to correspond with one side of the opening when said locking device is moved outwardly. The outer end 14L of the locking device is turned toward the base and is provided with a transverse slot 15. A spring 16 has a central coiled portion 17 which is mounted on a stud 18 in the end of the support opposite the slot 15. The arms 19 of the spring are pressed outwardly, in opposite directions by the coil and pass through the slot 15 and also through a corresponding slot 20 in the proximate end of the support. The spring arms are also provided with angularly ar ranged outwardly and upwardly extending .grips 21, each of which is substantially U-shaped, providing arms 22, 23. The end 14 of the locking device is arranged between the arms 22, 23 and said arms act as cams.
When the grips are moved toward each other, manually, their camming arms 23, slide diagonally across the inner side of the end 15 of the locking device and exert camming action thereon, thus causing the locking device to be moved to disengaged position, releasing the same from one of the notches of the rod so that the end of the rod may be detached from the support. The spring acts normally by moving its arms 19 outwardly to cause the arms 22 of the grips, which bear on the front or outer side of the locking device to snap or hold the latter in closed position, and assuming that the stud of one end of the rod has been placed in the opening 10, one notch of the stud is engaged by the fixed portion of the support and the other notch is engaged by the movable locking device and hence the rod is securely and yet detachably fastened to the support.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In combination with a rod having a notch near one end, a support having an opening to receive said end, a locking device on the support and movable into and out of engagement with the notch and a spring to normally hold the locking device in closed position and also forming means to move the locking device to release position.
2. In combination with a rod having a notch near one end, a support having an opening to receive said end, a locking device on the support movable into and out of engagement with the notch, and having a portion provided with a slot, and a spring having an arm extended through said slot and also provided with a grip exertingcamming action on the locking device and normally holding the latterin engaged position.
3. In combination with a rod having ,a notch near one end, a support having an opening to receive said end, a locking device on the support movable into and out of engagement with the notch and having a portion provided with a slot, and a spring having an arm extended through said slot and also provided with a grip exerting camming action on the locking device and normally holding the latter in engaged position, the
grip being also provided with a camming arm to move thelocking device to released position when the spring is moved by the 15 grip.
