JOSEPH J. 'lI-IULL, or BOYD, Wisconsin.
BOLT-KEEPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1916.
Application filed June 17, 1916. Serial No. 104,222.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrrr J. TI-IULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boyd, in the county of Chippewa and State of ld isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Keepers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bolt keepers and one of its objects is the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, durable and eiiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a substantially U-shaped base, having means adjustably mounted thereon for receiving the end of a bolt and which may be readily adjusted toward and from the bolt to accommodate bolts of various lengths.
A further object of this invention is to provide a substantially U-shaped member, having its legportion adjustably secured to the leg portion of the base, whereby the U-shaped member may be moved toward and from the end of a bolt to insure an engagement with the end of the bolt, when bolts of several lengths are employed.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the followin description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top planview of a bolt keeper constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. l, and, Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the adjustable means for the U-shaped member.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a substantially U- shaped base, having a web portion 2 provided with countersunk apertures to receive screws 4 for holding or securing the base 1 to a door jamb 5. The base 1 being positioned upon the door jamb 5 adjacent the door 6 is for receiving a sliding bolt 7 carried by the door 6 and which may be of any desired construction. The leg portions 8 of the U-shaped base 1 are each provided with an elongated slot 9 which receives screw threaded bolts 10 having nuts 11 turned thereon. The U-shaped basel forming a guide for receiving the sliding bolt 7 when moved in the direction of the door jam'b 5. A substantially 'U-shaped member 12, having its leg portions 13 engaging the outer faces of the leg portions. 8 of the base 1 and the web portions overlying the web portions 2 of the base 1 and spaced therefrom as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 which allows the sliding bolt 7 to slide freely Within the base 1.
The leg portions 13 of the U-shaped member 12 are provided with elongated slots l t for receiving the bolts 10 for adjustably securing the U-shaped member 12 to the base 1.
The leg portions of the base 1 and the ,leg portions of the U-shaped member 12 having elongated slots therein provides means whereby the U-shaped member may be adjusted toward and from the door 6 by releasing the tension of the nuts 11 upon the bolts 10 to accommodate sliding bolts 7 of various lengths. The U-shaped member 12 may be adjusted away fromthe door 6 a distance of the length of the slots in the leg portions 13 thereof and the slots in the leg portions 8 of the base 1 and also may be adjusted toward the door 6 in approximately the same distance whereby the U- shaped member 12 will overlie the door 6 and act as a keeper thereto or prevent the door from being opened or may be adjusted so that one of the edges of the U-shaped member 12 be in vertical alinement with the edge of the base 1 adjacent the door so as to properly engage or surround a sliding bolt which only projects a slight distance beyond the door 6.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that a keeper has been provided which is capable of receiving sliding bolts of several sizes and also may be used as retaining means for holding the door 6 in closed position when desired.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is 1. A bolt keeper comprising a substantially U-shaped base secured to a door jamb, the leg portions thereof having elongated slots therein, bolts mounted in said elongated slots, and a substantially U-shaped member adjustably carried by the bolts for retaining a door in a closed position.
2. A bolt keeper com-prising a substan- 15 tially U-shaped base secured to a door jamb,
the leg portions thereof provided With elongated slots, bolts mounted in said elongated slots; nuts on said bolts, a substantially U- shaped member having its legs provided with elongated slots to receive the bolts for adjusting the U-shaped member upon the U-shaped base to receive sliding bolts of varying lengths.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
