ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCE.
met Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov., "3', 1916.
Appiieation sied August 2, i915. serial No. 43,134.
don, State, of Connecticut, have invented' certain new and useful Improvements in Orthodontic Appliances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates particularly to toothbands which serve as a medium of attachment between the arch-bar of a regulating device andthe teeth ofthe dental arch, and
is directed especially to the structure of the band proper.
The principal object of my'invention is to provide a tooth-band which is so reinforced as to aord ample rigidity when connected with the arch-bar of- -a tooth-regulating appliance, to prevent distortion of the band, and to insure positive response of the tooth to the action of the arch-bar.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a tooth-band which may be so engaged with the arch-bar that said arch-barmay be disposed in a plane as near the axis of said tooth-band as is practicable.
My invention also includes yall of the various novel features of construction and Aarrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a tooth-band conveniently constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a'plan view of the toothband shown in Fig. 1, showing the arch-bar in operative engagement therewith; and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the tooth-band shown in Figs. 1 and 2 before being formed around the tooth.
En said iigures, the tooth-band 5 is provided with a projection forming a hook 6 whose outer free extension 7 projects toward one edge/0f the tooth-band 5 and between which and the tooth-band is a recess 8 in which the arch-bar 9 may be engaged.
The arch-bar 9, as best shown in Fig. 2, is preferably held in direct tangential contact with vthe tooth-band 5, and is prevented from accidental displacement from the recess 8 by any suitable form of key or retaining device (not shown), which may ,extend through the aperture l0 4in said projection, and be so formed as to lock said arch-bar 9 in the position shown in dot and dash lines in Fig. 1.
The tooth-band may be formed of a strip of metal or other suitable material, such as shown in plan or edge view in Fig. 8, which may be bent to conform to any selected tooth 0f the dental arch, and mayhave its ends joined in any suitable manner, such as shown, for instance, at 12 in Figs. 1 and 2.
The hook 6 is preferably disposed at or near the medial region 13 of the tooth-band 5, or, in other words', substantially equi-disltant from the opposite ends 15 and 16, and said medial region 13, as shown in each of the Figs. l, 2 and 3, is relatively thicker thanthe other portions of the tooth-band, tapering from said thickened medial region 13 to the regions of minimum thickness at the respective ends l5 and 16.
It will be readily seen that a tooth-band thus thickened at the region of the attachment of the hook or other attaching means for engaging the arch-bar, notonly provides for the desired rigidity between the said hook and band, but affords such an attachment for the base of the hook, that said h ook may be so formed that its free eXtension 7 opposes the outer surface of the band, whereby the arch-bar may be held by said hook contiguous to the tooth-band proper, and cooperate directly therewith when adjusted to vary the position of the tooth to be operated upon.
It will be obvious that a tooth-band constructed in accordance 'with my invention affords such a connection between the archbar and the tooth to be operated upon, that a closer relation between the lingual axis of said tooth of said arch-bar is effected.
l do not desire to limit my invention to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the means relatively thicker than-theremainder 10 ap ended claims. of said band. x
