Specification of Letters ra Application filed A ri1'21, 1915. Seria1No.22,778. I i
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. ANGLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New London, in the county of New London, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orthodontia Appliances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. f
My invention relates particularly to that class of orthodontia appliances which includes an arch-bow having its terminal portions adjustably engaging with suitable anchorages, and arranged to be connected intermediate of said anchorages with selected teeth of the dental arch, for the purpose of forcing them into normal alinement with the dental arch, and is directed especially to the construction of the terminal anchorages.
It has been found in practice, especially in small children, that the tissues of the cheek are very tender and readily irritated by any projecting part of a tooth regulating appliance, such as the free end of the archhow or the tubular sheath of said anchorage.
The principal object of my invention is to provide terminal anchorages for the arch bow, which are so formed as to avoid the possibility of any such annoyance to the patient. I
Specifically stated, my invention comprehends a terminal anchorage for an arch-bow, having its sheath curved longitudinally to substantially conform to the hollow of the patients cheek, and tending to direct the terminals of said arch-bow lingually.
My invention also includes all of the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely spec- In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of the upper dental arch, showing a tooth regulating appliance conveniently embodying my invention connected therewith; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the anchorage shown at the right of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a greatly enlarged fragmentary sectional view of said anchorage, taken longitudinally along the axis of the sheath in a horizontal plane.
In said figures, the dental arch 4 has its lateral incisors 5 and 6 respectively connected by the tooth-bands 7 and 8 with the arch-bow 9, whose terminal portions 10 and 11 are adjustably engaged with the terminal anchorages l2 and 13, which comprise the anchor-bands It and the tubular sheaths 15, through which the terminal portions of the arch-bow 9 extend, and with respect to which said arch-bow may be longitudinally adjusted by the nuts 16.
The anchor-bands 15 may be of any wellknown construction arranged to embrace the desired anchor teeth of the dental arch, each being provided with a threaded projection 17 on one end, extended through an eye 19 on the other end, and arranged to be clamped on the anchor tooth by the nut 20, in threaded engagement with said projection 17, as shown in Fig. 1.
The sheath 15 which is carried by the anchor-band 14, instead of extending rectilinearly, as heretofore constructed, is bowed longitudinally to substantially conform to the hollow of the cheek of the wearer, so that its distal end tends to curveli'ngually, whereby any projecting terminal portion of the arch-bow 9 willbe directed away from the cheek of the wearer and thereby avoid any possible irritation of the tissues of the cheek.
It will be observed that the terminal portions of. the arch-bow 9 may, if desired, be initially curved to conform to the curvature of the sheath 15, so that only a minimum friction between the arch-bow and its sheath may exist, or that the form of said terminal portions may be varied to produce various PatentedDea7, 1915.
degrees of frictional cooperation between them and said sheaths, through which they extend; for instance, referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings, the terminal portions of the arch-bow 9 may be initially straight, as shown'in dot and dash lines in said figure, or they may be curved, as shown in dash lines in said figure.
It may be here noted that when the terminal portion of the arch-bow 9 is initially curved, as shown in dash lines in Fig. 3, it will when engaged in the sheath 15 tend to shift distally with respect thereto, but when the terminal portion of said arch-bow is initially straight, as shown in dot and dash lines in said figure, any tendency to shift will be mesially effected.
My invention is advantageous in that the sheath tends to curve around the anchor to l hi and. therefore more nearly conforms to the curve of the tooth-band which embraces said tooth, whereby a more perfect therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claim. r
'Having thus described my invention, I claim: a I
An anchorage device for the arch-bow of a tooth regulating appliance, comprising a 1:3 tooth-band having a curved sheath.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of April, A. D;, 1915. EDWARD H. ANGLE. Witnesses:
