1377768 Orthodontic appliances P C KESLING 21 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 59392/71 Heading A5R An orthodontic appliance 25 for use with a bracket 34, Fig. 6, having attaching flanges 41, (40), Figure 5 (not shown), and a body 35 extending labially from the flanges and having sockets (36) at the occlusal and gingiral ends thereof and a mesial-distally extending arch wire slot, comprises a frame 25, Fig. 1, projections 31, 32 on the frame adapted to engage in the sockets (36) and lock the appliance on the bracket, and an arm 33 extending from the frame to overlie the arch wire slot to lock the arch wire 43 to the bracket, deformation of the frame being necessary to mount or demount the appliance on the bracket. The appliance or lock ring 25 may be made of metal, such as brass, or moulded from a resilient plastics material. In the case of a metal lock ring 25, it is made in a shape to be easily slipped on to the bracket and is subsequently deformed by squeezing the ring on surfaces 29a, 30a with a pliers. On the other hand, a resilient plastics lock ring is moulded in the shape that it will ultimately take when applied to a bracket, and the ring is deformed by compressing the sides 27, 28 during application. The appliance may alternatively take the form of a half-ring (62), Figure 11 (not shown), or of a lock ring (75), Figure 16 (not shown), including lingually facing projections (79) defining slots (77) for accepting the arch wire'43 to prevent relative tipping of the arch wire and lock ring. To effect mesiodistal inclinations a lock ring (84), Figure 18 (not shown), is provided with flexible mesiodistally directed extensions (86), (87) having hooked ends for engaging the arch wire.
