TOOL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led January 11, 1916. Serial No. 71,556.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Enic M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident 'of Ulianogan, in the county oi' Olranogan and State of Washington, have invented an Improvement in Tool-Holders, of which the 'following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in supporting devices and has particular reference to a tool holder or hanger adapted to be attached to some convenient part of a Workmans apparel.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder or hanger including a body portion having stationary .supporting jaws and a normally open pivoted locking or retaining jaw automatically operated, against a spring tension, by the insertion of a tool into the holder to swing said pivoted jaw to locking position whereby to detachably retain said tool in engagement with the holder.
Another object is the provision of a pring pressed sliding holder mounted upon the body portion and engaged by the locking jaw, when the same is moved to locking position, to retain the latter in Vsuch position, a pair or' releasing levers being pivoted to said body portion and adapted to be manually operated to disengage said slide from said jaw whereby the parts will automatially return to normal position.
rlhe inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of Which, for the purpose or' illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in Which- Fioure 1 is a front elevation of the holder constructed iii accordance with the invention and shown in openedposition. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the device in closed or locking position, a hammer being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4f-1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the means for retaining the locking javv in closed position and for releasing the same from such position. Fig. Gis a perspective view of the locking jaw. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the locking j awsupporting member used in connectionv with the invention.
The drawing illustrates what is novv believed to be a' preferred embodiment of the invention in which the device comprises a body portion consisting of a base plate 10 having the sides 1l attending from. the 101.
Y gitudinal edges thereof and cut away to provide a space l2 intermediate the ends of the body portion for the reception of a tool. The opposite end of the body portion has secured thereto the oppositely disposed tool supporting aWs 18 provided at their tips with the outwardly extending lips let between which the tool is inserted, the latter being supported upon the upper edges of said jaws when the same is in position in the holder'. The body portion 10 is preferably adapted to be attached to some convenient part of the .vorlmans apparel, such as the belt'or waist line of the trousers and is secured in position by means or' screws 15 which pass through plates 1G and 17 adjacent the upper and lower ends o1 said body portion.
The sides 11 or the body portion have "mounted therebetween and adjacent the base plate 10 a jaw support-ing member generally indicated by 18 and having mounted in each longitudinal edge thereof the pivot rods 19 and 20, the former being journaled in said sides ll. A spring 2l is coiled about the rod 19 intermediate the ends thereof and has one extremity 29 secured to the base plate 10 at the point 23 While its other eX- tremity is securedrto the body portion of the supporting member 18 at 25, said spring being adapted to normally retain the member 18 in the position shown in Fig. 2, the movement of said member toward this position beinglimited by the lug 26 struck out from the side 11. A locking jaw, generally indicated by the numeral 27, ofsubstantially L-shaped formation in edge elevation is pivoted to the rod 20 of the supporting member 18 and for the purpose of so mounting said jaw the same is provided with oppositely disposed pivoted ears 28 formed upon the edges and adjacent one end thereof and a cleat 29 secured to the back of t-he jaw and provided with similar ears all of which have the alined openings for receiving the rod 20. A spring` 30 is coiled about the rod 20 and has one extremity 31 secured to the supporting member at 32 While the other extremity 33 is secured to the back of the locking jaw at 3&1, said spring being adapted to retain the locking jaw in the normal opened position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the movement toward this position being limited by the lug 35 Struck from the side 11. The end of the locking jaw adapt-ed to be locked is provided with oppositely disposed` lugs 36' which, when the said jaw is iiD is located in a manner to be presently described.
The base plate of the body portion has struck out therefrom a. plurality of oppositely disposed guides between which is mounted a jaw locking slide member 39 which moves longitudinally of said base plate, said guides engaging the iianges 40` of said slide member. The body portion of the slide member 39 is of achanneled formation and at its lower end is provided with a stop 41 against which one end of a coil spring 42 impinges, the other end of said spring engaging a similar stop 43 struck out from the base plate l0, saidspring being adapted to normally retain the same in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Adjacent the upper end ot the central portionof the slide member 39 the same is provided with a latch receiving opening 44 having a guide lug 45 formed upon the edge of the opening at one end thereof. It will thus be seen that when the locking jaw 27 is moved into locking position the latch 37 will contact with the guide lug 45 whereupon said latch will be caused to enterthe opening 44 and assume the position shown in Fig. 3, whereupon the jaw will be held in the position shown in said ligure until released in a. manner whichl will presently appear.
Adjacent the lower end of the body por tion and just above the stationary supporting jaws 13 the former has pivoted thereto at points 46 the releasing levers 47 the outer ends of which extend through the slots 48 formed in the adjacent sides of the body portion, Vthe extremities of said levers being provided 'with'linger grips 49. The inner end50 ot' each lever has pivoted thereto one end ofV a slide operating element 51 the intermediate portion of which is adapted to engage the stop 41 of the slide member 39. When it is desired to release the tool from the holder the grips 49 are moved inwardly toward each other thereby rocking the levers about the pivots 46 and raising the element 51 whichwill in turn lift the slide member 39 until the. latch 37 is released from engagement with the edge of the openingV 44 whereupon the locking jaw 27 will, under the action of the spring 22, return to its normalpositionvshown in Fig. 2.
The abutting portions of the supporting jaws 13 are provided with elongated slots 52 and 53 extending at right angles to-each other and adapted to receive the screws 15 for retaining said jaws in position, said openings being made elongated for the purpose of permitting a certain amount of adjustment of said jaws whereby tools ot' dittion of a tool into the holder to move to loclring position and ret-ainthe tool in said holder. A tool holder comprising a body por- Y tion, stationary supporting jaws associated therewith, a normally .open locking jaw actuated by the insertion of a tool into the holder to move to locking position and retain the tool in said holder, a sliding member engaged by said locking jaw when moved to locking position to retain thesame in such position, and pivoted means for disengaging said sliding member fromsaid jaw to permit the return of the latter to normal position.

A tool holder comprising a body portion, stationary supporting jaws associated therewith, a normally open locking jaw actuated by the insertion of atool into the f holder to move to locking position and retain the tool in said holder, a sliding mem# ber engaged by said locking jaw when moved to locking position to retain the same in such position, pivoted means for disengaging said sliding member from said jaw to permit the return ofthe latter'to normal position, .and means for automatically return ing said locking jaw to normal position after being released byV said sliding member. l
5. A tool holder comprising-a body portion, a jaw supporting member pivoted thereto, and a locking jaw, normally in unlocked position, pivoted to said Vsupporting member and automatically operated bythe insertion of a tool into said holderto move said jaw to locking position.

A tool holder comprising a body portion adapted to receive a portion of a tool therein, tool supporting jaws adjustably mounted on said body, a jaW supporting member pivoted to said body, a locking jaw pivoted intermediate its ends to said supporting member, means for normally retaining said locking jaw in open position, means carried by said jaw and adapted to be contacted by a tool as the same is inserted into the body for moving said jaw to locking position, a sliding member adjustable relative to said body portion for releasably retaining said looking jaw in such position, and a lifting element engaging said sliding member for actuating the same to release said locking aw.
