EYE-SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1916.
Application filed November 17, 1915. Serial No. 61,891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURT It. RIoKARDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eye- Shields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to light shields and particularly to a shield for relieving the eyes of a motorist from the blinding glare of the headlights of an approaching car.
The present invention contemplates an eye shield or auxiliary vizor for a motorists cap or other head covering which by the simple tilting of the head may be moved into protecting relation to the line of vision whereby the eyes will be protected at the proper time and whereby at all other times the normal range of vision will not be ob structed.
The construction and manner of using my device will be more fully disclosed in the specification which follows.
In the drawings accompanying this specification I have shown a form of shield which not only illustrates the principles of my in vention but is in itself an embodiment found satisfactory in actual use and well adapted to the requirements of manufacture.
Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are correspondingly applied, and in these drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a cap equipped with my invention, Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the eye shield removed.
I have indicated at 1 a cap having a vizor 2. The light absorption member of my'invention consists of a sheet 3, preferably of celluloid or some similar material colored in a suitable absorbing shade, as green, amber or the like and of a shape and size to overhe and conform to the vizor 2 of the cap. The member 3 at its forward edge has an integral depending flange 4 which is formed by creasing the material of the shield 3. The member 3 may be provided with a centrally disposed cut out 5 in which is received the usual button or snap fastener 6 of the cap. Near opposite corners at the rear edge of the shield are perforations 7 in which is received an elastic or other device 8 for securing the shield 3 in position upon the cap. The efiective length of the flexible connection 8 may be varied by means of an adjusting device 9.
In use, the shield 3 is adjusted by means of the tape 8 to the cap as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This positions the shield in overlying relation to the vizor2 of the cap with the flange 4 projecting downwardly slightly beyond the forward edge of the vizor. Under normal conditions, the flange 1 is entirely clear of the normal range of vision of the eyes. If, however, the headlights on a car approaching from the opposite direction are observed, the head is tilted downwardly slightly to position the flange a in protecting relation to the line of vision so as to protect the eyes from the blinding glare of the head lights. As soon as the car is passed, the head is tilted back to leave the vision unobstructed.
The device of the present invention not only provides an effective shield for the eyes against the glare of a head light, but may be used as an ordinary eye shield as when driving in the daytime.
Various modifications in the shape, material, and manner of attaching my device may obviously be made, if within the limits of the appended claims.
IV hat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for use with a cap, comprising a relatively horizontal member having a downwardly extended light absorption area disposed beyond the forward edge of the cap and movable into protecting relation to the range of vision by simple tilting movement of the head.
2. A. device for use with a cap having a vizor, comprising a member effectively disposed relative to the vizor and having a downwardly extended light absorption area disposed beyond the forward edge of the vizor, and movable into protecting relation to the range of vision by simple tilting movement of the head, and means for fastening said member to the cap.
3. A device for use with a head covering provided with a forwardly projecting portion, comprising a translucent member extending beyond the forward edge of said portion and having a notch at its rear edge, and a device on the head covering receivable in said notch.
4:. In combination with the vizor of a cap and the fastening therefor, a member carried by said cap and overlying said vizor. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature said nien'iber having a forwardly pointed in presence of two Witnesses.
notch at its rear edge to receive said fastener of the cap, and having a downwardly BURT RICKARDS directed translucent light absorption area lVitnesses:
disposed beyond the forward edge of the VICTORIA LOWDEN,
vizor. AGNEs V. OCONNELL.
