Be it known that 1, JOHN J. RICHARDS,

J r., a citizen of the United'States, residing at Brookline, county of Norfolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glare- Screens, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for protecting the eyes of the driver of an automobile from the overpowering glare of the headlights of an approaching car. As is well known, the direct beams of even the usual headlight are so intense as to blind the eyes of an oppositely traveling driver.

My present invention contemplates a simple and efi'ective device for protecting the eyes of the driver by reducing the illuminated headlight to dull images or spots capable of being intently observed without danger or disconfort to the nakedeye, and one capable of quick and facile installation as well as of such simple construction as to render it capable of'low cost production and.

. The construction and operation of my device will be more fully described in the specification which follows.

Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are employed to indicate corresponding parts, and in the draw ings: Figure 1 is a view of my protector in use, Fig. 2 is an edge view, Fig. 3 a front 7 view, and Fig. 4: an enlarged section through the vacuum boss. y

My device consists of a disk 1 preferably of celluloid colored in any suitable absorbing shade as in green, amber, or the like. This, screen is preferably of such absorptive quality as to reduce the image of a fully illuminated headlight to a mere bright spot which may be observed without injury or discomfort to the otherwise naked eye.

The disk 1 is-perforated centrally as at to receive the head 3 ofa boss or buttonfl having on its lower face a cup 5. The boss .or button 4 is preferably of rubber and the inserted through the opening 2 of the disk 1, thus permanently engaging it and at the same time this head 3 affords a convenient knob for disengagment of the device by breaking the suction of the cup 5. The guard is therefore capable of easy adjustment or removal. It may be set at any place on the wind shield and when in place is screen formed by the disk 1 shows the head-- lights of an approaching car merely as two bright spots or images which may be watched and avoided without discomfort.

-Various modifications in the form and construction of my device may obviously be resorted to if within the limits of the appended claims.-

What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v

1. A screen for automobile Windshields comprising a light absorption member designed to occupy a position substantially parallel with and in close juxtaposition to one face of the windshield, and a device for engaging the windshield and having a connection to said member for supporting it in such position, said member having a flexible removing said member from the windshield without disturbing the connection between said device and member.

3. A screen for use with a tr arent plate, comprising a substantially fiat, em'ble light absorption member, and'a suction device secured tosaid member and designed to be attached to said plate for supporting said member in substantial parallelism therewith and in juxtaposition to one face thereof.
