, Be it knownthat I, DnLsoY SC I JL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Logan andState of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulverizers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in pulverizers and has relation more particularly to a device of this generalcharacter especially designed and adapted for use in connection with. the cultivation of beets; and it is an object ofthe invention to provide a novel and improved pulverizer whereby the crust at opposite sides of the rows is broken to facilitate the plants getting through the soil and also to loosenthe crust so that the work of the thinners will be materially facilitated. v

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved pulverizer whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

in order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now prcceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a pulverizer constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of one of the blades as herein embodied.

While I am in the present application only describing and illustrating one pulverizer. it is to be understood that in practice two or more of my improved pulverizers are employed and that the same are arranged in relative longitudinal alinement.

i-is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a cylindrical body of predetermined dimensions but preferably substantially thirty inches in length and five and one-quarter inches in diameter. It is also to be understood that the body 1 may be formed of wood or any desired material.

Suitably secured to the opposite ends of the bf dy 1 are the plates 2 provided with the trunnions 3 positioned at the axial center of the body 1 and which afford means whereby the roller may be supported by the standards l or the like. The standards 4 are adapted to be suitably secured to a cultivator or other portable supporting body (not shown) but as the supporting bodyand the particular manner in which the standards dare secured thereto form no part of my present invention, it is believed that a description and illustration thereof isanot re? quired. At predetermined distances inwardly of tie ends thereof the body 1 is provided with the annular peripheral grooves 5 having their maximum diameters preferably three inches and said annular grooves 5 are spaced preferably twenty inches from their transverse centers. It is also preferred that the grooves 5 be of maximum depth of threequarters of an inch.

The opposite sides of each of the grooves 5 are defined by the outstanding annular blades B of a diameter of two and one-half inches and of a thickness of three-eighths of an inch. As herein embodied, each of the blades B comprises two semi-circular sections 6 whereby the same may be readily applied to the body 1. The opposite ends of each of the sections 6 have their inner marginal portions returned to substantially an angle of 90 as indicated at 7, to afi ord ears through which the clamping members 8 are disposed in order-to effectively apply the blades B in an operative position.

The clamping members 8 may be of any desired type but as herein disclosed comprise a threaded bolt and a coacting nut.

In the use of the device the blades B are adanted t cut the crust ofthe soil at the opposite sides of a row and this in practice has been found of great importance especially in view of the fact that in the majority of the soils in which beets or the like are raised the action of the pulverizer packs the soil in such a manner as to hinder or obstruct the growth of the plants. By having the blades B out as opposite sides of the row this disadvantage is avoided and also facilitates the work of the thinners as the thinners will not pull out any of the plants other than the one desired to be Withdrawn.
