Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 19, 1912. Serial No. 704,631.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN D. WOMAGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jasonville, in the county of Greene and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Block-Molds, of which the followingis a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a mold particularly adapted for forming building blocks, said mold being constructed in a novel manner whereby the same may be readily and quickly assembled and separated to release a block, adjustable means being also provided for forming blocks of different sizes.
In carryingout the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the parts in operative position. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same with the parts in open position.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention comprises a main supportingframe '5 which is formed from a pair of longitudinally extending parallel channel irons 6, said channel irons being connected by the transverse braces 7 A supporting bracket 8 extends from one of the channel irons 6 adjacent each endthereof and each of said brackets is provided at its free end with a bearing 9 adapted to receive a longitudinally extending shaft 10, said shaft being rotatable in said bearings. A supporting arm 11 is secured to the shaft 10 adjacent each end thereof, said arms movably supporting the mold proper; A face plate 12 is secured to the supporting arms 11 by means of a plurality of bolts 13 and rising from one longitudinal edge of said plate 12 is a core plate 14 which is secured to the frame of the face plate by means of suitable fasteners 15, said core plate being provided with a plurality of apertures adapted to receive cores for forming the usual openings in the building block, it being understood that the cores are inserted into the openings in the ordinary well known manner.
Hingedly connected to each end of the face plate frame are the end doors 17 which are supported in a vertical position at right angles to the face plate 12 when the plastic material is being tamped. A wedge block 18 is detachably connected to each of the end doors 1? by means of a lip 19 which is adapted to engage an extension 20 formed on the lower end of said wedge block. The upper end of said wedge block is supported by means of a set screw 21 which is mounted in an car 22 formed upon the end door 17. W hen assembling the mold the wedge block 18 s adapted to be engaged by a plate 23 which 1s pivotally connected at its lower end to the transverse adjustable bar 24 which is supported upon the channel irons 6 of the main supporting frame 5. The plate 23 has a bracket extension 25 having a lower portion arranged in spaced parallel relation to the extension 26 of the adjustable bar 24, said bracket being connected to the extension through the medium of a bolt 27. A set screw 28 is also mounted in the extension 26 and 1s adapted to engage the lower end of vthe bracket 25 whereby the same may be forced upwardly thus causing the plate 23 to tightly engage the wedge block 18. The
. set screw 21 carried by the end door 17 may also be used to cause the wedge block 18 to move downwardly a slight distance thus maintaining the same in binding engagement with the plate 23 and preventing any outward movement of the end doors when the material is being tamped. The supporting bar 21 is provided in each end thereof with transverse elongated slots 29 which are adapted to be engaged by the fastening bolts 30 which also engage the openings 31 formed in the channel irons 6 thus permitting the bar 2-1 to be adjusted longitudinally of the frame when it is desired to use a mold of greater or less size for forming different ears 35 and 36 respectively carried by the said plate 32 at each end thereof. The supporting arms 33 and 34 are adapted to telescope within the cylinders 37 and 38 respectively and are secured therein by means of the set screws 39. The lower ends of the cylinders 37 and 38 are provided with bearings 40 which are adapted to engage the shaft 10 and adapted to be secured thereto by means of the set screws 41. The plate 32 has detachably secured thereto in any suitable manner a pallet 42 upon which the mold block restswhen the mold is swung to an open position as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
A pallet supporting plate is locked against movement when tamping the material and such is effected by means of the said plate 32 having connected thereto a clamp, the
body portion 43 of which is pivotally and adjustably mounted between the ears 44 carried by the said plate. A pivot pin 45 is passed through registering openings 46 and eye 47 on the inner end of the body 43. A clamp arm 48 is slidably mounted upon the free end of the body portion 43 by means of a bolt 49, the outer end of said clamp arm being provided with an inwardly extending foot 49 which is adapted to extend over and engage the outer face of the frame of the face plate 12 for retaining the plate 32 in an adjusted position. The clamp arm 48 is provided with an elongated slot 50- through which the bolt 49 extends and by which means the said clamp arm is permitted to move on the body portion 43. A cam 51 is carried by the inner end of the clamp arm 48 and is eccentrically secured to the body portion 43 by means of a shaft 52, It will thus be seen that when the cam is rotated the foot extension 49 will be moved into or out of engagement with the outer face of the frame of the face plate 12 and in order to readily operate the cam, there is provided a lever 53 which is also mounted upon the shaft 52 and fixed to the said cam by means of a bolt 54.
After the block has been formed within the mold, the latter is tilted to the position illustrated in Fig. 3, it being understood that.
the same is pivotally mounted upon the shaft 1.0 by means of the arms 11, and the tilting movement is limited by means of the extensions 55 which are carried by the lower ends of the cylinders 37 and 38, said extensions being adapted to engage the longitudinally extending rod 56 which is carried by the brackets 8. The tilting movement of the mold may also be adjusted by means of a set screw 57 which engages the extension 55 so that the same may come in contact with the rod 56. After the mold has been tilted bodily, the pallet may be released from engagement from the face plate 32 by means of the lever 53 which will release the foot extension 49 from engagement with said face plate and thus permit the pallet 42 to assume the position illustrated in Fig. 4. The counter-balancing weight 57 is adjustably mounted by means of a set screw 58 upon the outer end of each of the supporting arms 11 whereby the tilting operation of the mold is facilitated.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing a block mold which is comparatively simple in construction thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minlmum, and 'WhlCll is durable and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
What is claimed is 1. A mold comprising a frame including longitudinally spaced members, brackets projected laterally from one of the longitudinal side faces of one of said members, a shaft mounted in the brackets and extending in parallelism to said members, arms secured to the shaft, end doors connected to said arms, a face plate frame carried by the arms and adapted to be moved into a position to overlie and bear upon the supporting frame, a core plate connected to the face plate, a pallet supporting plate pivotally connected to said shaft, a plurality of upper and lower adjustably connected telescopic members having respective connection with the shaft and the outer supporting plate for pivotally connecting the latter to the said shaft, a longitudinallyextending rod carried by the bracket, limiting means carried by and depending from the lower ends of said lower telescopic members and adapted to engage with the longitudinally extending rod for limiting tilting movement of the pallet supporting plate and the shaft, and clamping means carried by the pallet supporting plate for engaging the faceplate to lock the supporting plate against movement when the parts are in operative position.
