Description
G. W. GREEN.
CLOTHES WASHING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. a. I9I5.
GEORGE WILLIAM GREEN, OF BOBIN, NEVI SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA..
CLOTHES-WASHING MACHINE.
Lacasse.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (ict, gli., Militia.,
Application filed September 3, 1915. Serial No. 48,792.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that i, GEORGE WILLIAM GREEN, subject of the King of Great Britain and ireland, residing at Bobin, New South Wales, Australia, have invented new and useful improvements in Clothes-Vashing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to manually operated clothes washing machines for domestic use, and particularly refers to that type of such machines in which the goods to be washed are placed with water and detergent substances in a rectangular box mounted on rockers and agitated therein by rocking said box.
in the type of machines above referred to now in use, certain means have been pro` vided for applying a rubbing motion to the goods during the rocking process, but these means have proved to be of limited effectiveness only. Machines of the rocker type have also proved objectionable in that when operated they tend to move about from place to place on the floor of a laundry while being rocked and are therefore found inconvenient in use.
My present invention aims primarily to apply to the goods in the washing process a certain definite movement in the box chamber and to apply to the water in which they are being washed a certain definite surging motion, whereby the goods will be caused to change position in the box and to suffer adequate rubbing, while the water will be caused to swill through and about them in a regular manner, thereby facilitating and quickening the washing operation, and it furthermore aims to provide means whereby such machines may be retained in a certain position on a laundry floor thereby to obviate the inconvenience caused by their movement from place to place thereon during the rocking process.
Certain regard must be paid to the proportions of the measurements of. such machines in order that the natural period of oscillation will synchronize with the surging movement of the water in the box chamber during the rocking process. in an e'ectively proportioned machine as shown in the accompanying drawings, the depth and the length of the box chamber in relation to its height above the rockers and in relation to the camber of the rockers is such as to obtain a balance which minimizes the power required to effect the rocking and insures effective and rapid washing. The height in this case to the top of the box chamber is three feet six inches, the length of the box chamber is three feet six inches and the rockers are struck to a four feet radius. It is obvious however that for a difference in the length of the box or a difference in the height of the machine a proportionate alteration needs to be made in the radius on which the rockers are curved.
The rectangular box is fitted with a stout deflecting cleat of V-section on one side of it, while its other side is fitted with two such deflecting cleats symmetrically disposed in relation to the length of the side, while on the bottom of the box two similar deflecting cleats are fitted arranged angularlv between the vertical defiecting cleats before mentioned which are fitted to the sides of the box.
As contradistinguished from machines of similar type in which a different arrange ment or a larger number of cleats are fitted, the disposition of the deflector cleats according to the present invention insures rapid change of position of the goods in the box during the washing process, while the water is caused to surge rapidly to and fro in a curve approximating to the shape of the iigure 8. rlhe means provided for preventing movement of the machine about the fioor during use consists in articulated arms fitted to the rockers at either end of each of them, one end of each such arm is pivotally attached to the rocker and the other pivotally attached to a lug adapted to be fixed to the floor of the laundry or fixed upon a platform.
rlhe top of the box is constructed with a surrounding coaming and is fitted with a drop-in lid with dog bar fastening. The discharge vent in the bottom of the box is fitted with a hose and cock to facilitate emptying used washing water into a sump drain or portable vessel.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective external view of the machine, and Fig. 2 is a similar view drawn in phantom to illustrate the arrangement of the deflecting cleats.
A designates the rockers, B the legs by means of which the rectangular box C is mounted on said rockers, D the vertical deflecting cleat at one side of the box, E two vertical deflecting cleats at the other side of the box, F two angularly disposed dellecting cleats on the bottom of the box, G lid, H dog bair vformed of a slightly cambered stili lath,
one end of which is engaged in a notch in the cross member J, its other end being engageable by a turn button K.
L is a coaming surrounding the top of the box.
. M is the waste pipe connected to a vent at the foot of the box, and N a cock on said waste pipe.
O and P are links articulated together at Q, pivotally attached to the rockers near the ends thereof at R and pivotally attached at S to lugs T which lare adapted to be fastened down toa floor or to a carrying platform.
The machine is operated, when charged with water, detergents, and the goods to be treated, by applying to it a regular rocking movement for more or less time depending upon the condition of the goods. This move- Copies of this patent may be obtained fof nve cents each, by addressing the nient is applied by the operator manually. the handpiece U across the ends of the box forming a convenient means for applying the motion.
What l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A clothes washing machine of the rocker box type having two bottom deflecting cleats arranged at an angle and obliqucly end to end in the box and three vertically disposed delecting cleats on the sides of the box in staggered relationship with two of said vertical oleats on one side of the box and one on the other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence oil two subscribing witnesses.
