BATH-TUB AND BASIN PLUG.
Application filed February 23, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BYRON N. Russian. and THOMAS V. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Weed, in the county of Siskiyou and State of Cahfornia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tubs and Basin Plugs; of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plugs adapted to be used upon bath tubs or wash basins and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a plug of simple structural arrangement having means connected therewith whereby the plug may be raised above the water outlet of the tub or basin without requirmga person or operator immersing the hand in the water which may be contained 1n the tub or basin.
With this object in view the device includes a frame adapted to be applied to the spigot or faucet and a spring pressed rod slidably mounted in the frame. The rod carries at itslower end a plug adapted to enter the waste outlet of the basin or tub when the rod is depressed. The rod 1s further provided with a shoulder adapted to engage under a lug provided upon the lframe whereby the said rod and plug may be held in depressed positions and the plug will be held in a closed position at the waste outlet of the tub or basin.
In the accompanying drawing :-F1gure1 is a side elevation of the plug. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper portion of the plug mechanism with parts in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing the device is applied to the spigots 1 which are such as those usually employed in conjunction with a bath tub or basin. A frame 2 is secured to the spigots 1 by means of hinged sections 3 which pass over the said spigots, the said sections being held in fixed positions with relation to the frame 2 by means of bolts or other securing devices 4. The frame 2 is provided at a point between the spigots 1 with a laterally disposed lug 5 having an opening 6. A rod 7 is slidably mounted in the frame 2 and the opening 6 of the lug 5 and the said rod carries at its lower end a plug 8 which is adapted to close the waste outlet 9 of the tub or basin when the rod 7 is depressed. A stop 10 is mounted upon the rod 7 and a coil Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 24, 1916.
Serial No. 80,057.
When it is desired to move the plug 8 into engagement with the upper edge of the waste outlet opening 9 of the tub or basin downward pressure is exerted upon the rod 7 whereby the spring 11 is compressed and the shoulder 12 is carried below the lower side of the lug 5. The rod 7 is then moved slightly in a lateral direction whereby the shoulder 12 is engaged against the under surface of the lug 5 and the plug 8 is held in lowered position in the upper end of the waste outlet 9 of the tub or basin. When it is desired that the plug 8 should be removed from the waste outlet 9 the rod 7 is moved so that the shoulder 12 is disengaged from the underside of the lug 5 and then pressure is released from the rod 7 whereby the tension of the spring 11 comes into play and the rod 7 is moved in an upward direction thus carrying the plug 8 above the upper end of the waste outlet 9 and spaced from the same so that the water which may be in the tub or basin may gravitate from the same to the waste outlet 9.
Therefore, it will be seen that a means for manipulating a plug is provided wherein it is not necessary to immerse the hands in the water in order to remove the plug from the waste outlet and the plug 8 is always maintained in a position ready at hand to be placed over the upper end of the waste outlet 9 of the tub or basin.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. In combination with a receptacle having a waste outlet and spigots disposed therein, a frame adapted to be applied to the spigots, a rod movably mounted with relation to the frame, a spring connected with the rod and normally maintaining the same in an elevated position and a plug carried at the lower end of the rod and adapted sition, a shoulder carried by the rod and adapted to be engaged under the lug to hold the rod in a depressed pcsition and a plug carried by the rod and adapted to cover the Waste outlet of the receptacle.
3; In combination with a receptacle having a waste outlet and spigots leading into the receptacle, a frame having hinged sections adapted to be applied to the spigots,
the lug, a spring en aging the rod and frame and being under tension with a tendency to normally hold the rod in an elevated position, a shoulder carried by the rod and adapted to be engaged against the under side of the lug and a plug carriedby the rod and adapted to close over the Waste outlet of the receptacle.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
