To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Sims 0. MACDOWNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Veneer Show-Window Store-Front; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a new and useful improved veneer show window store front, particularly to the rabbeted j amb stops or sash bars to receive plate glass, in combination with bars for holding plate glass in the rabbets of the jamb stops.

Another feature of the invention is to arrange the sash bars in such wise with relation to the sheet metal covering bars for the transom bar, the sill for the plate glass and the side-walk sill, as to shed water.

In practical fields it may be found necessary to subject the details of construction to alterations, to which the inventor is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings :-Figure 1 is asectional perspective view of a portion of a show window store front constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the sash bars. Fig.

3 is a detail perspective view of one of the sheet metal coverings for either the transom bar or the bar which supports the rabbeted jamb bars of the plate glass. Fig. 4 is a sectional perspective view showing a slightly different construction of show window store front, showing a plate glass between the baserabbeted jamb stop, and the adjacent sill, which supports the plate glass of the show window proper, thereby permitting the compartment behind the base plate glass to be used for displaying articles. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a por tion of one of the sash bars shown in Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawings, more particularly to Fig. 1, l designates a cement base sill, upon which the side-walk sill 2 is supported. However, these same sills are shown in Fig. 4. Still referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the side-walk sill is provided with a sheet metal covering 3 constructed with the hollow ribs 4 and the flange 5, which terminates in a supplemental flange 6, which contacts with the wood member 7, adjacent to which the sill 8, which supports the jamb bar 9, is arranged. A sheet metal covering 10 is provided for covering the front edge portion of the sill 8. This covering 10 is constructed with the hollow ribs 11 and the upper and lower flanges 12 and supplemental flanges 14 and 15. The flange 15 engages the member 7 as shown. Engaging the flanges 6 and 15 is a sheet metal panel 16. Engaging the flanges 5 and 13 and the sheet metal panel 16 are the angular flanges 17 and 18 of the upper and lower sash bars 19 and 20, which are secured in place by the screws or other suitable means 21. Screws 22 are provided for securing the flanges 5 and 13 in place.

In Fig. 4 the structure below the sill 8 is slightly modified, for instance jamb bars 23 and 24 are provided, in the rabbets 25 and 26 of which a plate glass 27 is arranged. Covering the jamb bars 23 and 24 are the sheet metal coverings 28 and 29 having flanges 30 and 31, the flange 30 be ing arranged between the jamb bar 23 and the side-walk sill 2, while the flange 31 is arranged between the sill 8 and the jam' b bar 24. The coverings 28 and 29 are provided with additional flanges 32 and 33, secured to the jamb bars 23 and 24 by the screws 34. Engaging the flanges 32 and 33 are the angular flanges 35 and 36 of the sash bars 37 and 38, which are secured in position by the screws or other suitable means 39. One of the angular flanges 36 of ra bbeted' the sash bar 37 engages the plate glass 27, while one of the flanges 35 of the sash bar 38 engages the upper portion of the plate glass 27. The sash bars 37 and 38 act to hold the plate glass 27 in position. In Fig. 4, however, the sheet metal coverings 3 and 10 (which are shown in Fig. 1) are also illustrated, for covering the front portions of the side-walk sill 2 and the sill 8. In

Fig. 4 trough-shaped bars 40 and 41are provided, the flanges 42 and 43 of which engage the coverings 28 and 29 and the flanges 6 and 15 of the coverings 3 and 10. The

trough-shaped bars 40 and 41 are secured in place by screws or other suitable means 44. The upper jamb bar 24 is secured to the sill 8 by the angular member 45, which consists of two parts 46 and 47 hinged together as at 48. Said hinged parts 46 and 47 are secured to the jamb bar 24 and the sill 8 by screws or other suitable means 49.

In Fig. 7 it will be seen that the cement base sill 1 is eliminated, and the side-walk sill 2 is designed to be arranged adjacent the side-walk, in other words, constituting a base sill. Also in Fig. 7 it will be observed that the coverings 3 and 10 are slightly modified, in that the flanges 5 and 13 are constructed narrower than those in Figs. 1 and 4, and in each of the Figs. 1, 4 and 7 the coverings 3 are secured imposition by the screws or other suitable means 50. - Fig. 7 a sheet metal panel 51 is arranged between the side-walk sill 2 and the sill 8. This sheet metal panel 51 engages a shoulder 52 of the sill 8, while the lower portion of the panel 51 engages between the flange 6 and the rib 53. The flange 15 of the flange "13 of the covering 10 engages upon the outside ofthe panel 51. By this construction the panel 51 is held in place. The covering 10 is secured. to the sill 8 by the screws or other suitable means 54.

In all the figures the construction of the show window store front above the sill 8 is similarly arranged and formed, therefore similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the views.

Arranged upon the sill 8 isthe jamb bar 9 having a rabbet 55 to receive the plate glass 56, the upper portion of which engages the rabbet 57 of the jamb bar 58, arranged under the transom sill 59. Disposed upon the sill 59 is the transom j amb bar 60 having a rabbet 61, in which the transom plate glass 62 is disposed. The transom plate glass at its upper portion is secured in a rabbet 63 of the upper transom jamb bar 64, which is secured in place adjacent the member 65, by means of the screws 66. The sill 59 is provided with a covering 67 having hollow ribs or channels 68 and 69 and the flanges 70 and 71, which terminate in supplemental flanges 72 and 73. Engaging the flanges 14, 73, 72 and the plate glass the outer face of the jamb member 64 are the flanges and 81 of the sash bar 82, which is secured in place by the screws or other suitable means 83. The member 65 is provided with a covering 84. 1

It will be observed that by the provision of the sash bars 76, 77, 78 and 82, the plate glasses 56 and 62 and the coverings l0 and 67 are held in place.

Fromthe foregoing it will be noted that there has been devised a simple and efiicient construction of show window store front, so arranged and constructed as to easily shed water, and to hold the covering and plate glass in place.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a veneer window front construction of the character described, the combination of a rabbeted sill or j amb, a plate above and a plate below said sill or jamb and each associated therewith with its outer face lo cated inwardly from the outer part of the sill or jamb, a sheet-metal facing covering said sill or j amb and having at its opposite edges inwardly-presented marginal-flanges, a sheet-metal sash-bar for each of said plates having one edge portion, disposed outside of and overlapping one of said marginal-flanges and cooperating therewith to assist in retaining the facing covering in position and having its opposite edge portion bearing against the correspondingplate, and one or more screws extended through each of said sash-bars and engaging said sill or jamb diagonally of the plane of the plate and inwardly from said marginal-flange and forcing the sash-bar toward the plate and toward said marginal-flange, substantially as described.
