To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID THEODORE RUBINs'rmN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Handles for Traveling-Bags and the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in metallic handles for traveling bags intended for use as a substitute for the more expensive leather handles commonly used and to perform all of the functions of the more expensive handle in a manner equally satisfactory thereto.

I have found that it is desirable with certain types of bags and cases to supply a handle stronger and more rigid than the leather handle and one that will stand harder use and longer exposure to the weather. I have also found that it is de sirable to provide a handle more readily attachable and therefore I have developed the handle here shown formed entirely of metal and having a portion of the securing means formed integral therewith.

The device and the method of its opera tion will be described as the specification progresses.

The following is what I consider the best means of carrying out this invention.

The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my handle, Fig. 2 a bottom plan view thereof, Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1, Fig. 4: shows a modification.

Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures where they appear.

From the drawings it will be noted that in general shape and design this handle closely approaches the better known leather handles.

The handle is provided with a grip portion as indicated at 1, which is of a size to conveniently fit the hand. Through the center of the grip portion a channel 2 is produced which assists in providing the proper shape to the handle and also serves as does the scoring on a leather handle to prevent slipping of the handle in the hands of the user.

At each end of the grip and connected thereto by a reduced portion of the handle I arrange tabs as shown at 3 and I. These tabs may be given any conventional shape and serve not merely as a decoration but also to prevent the turning of the handle. The tabs further become important in pre senting a wide surface of engagement between the handle and the bag to which it is attached. I 7

Between the grip 1, and each of the tabs I arrange a plurality of outwardly extending lugs as indicated at 5, 6, 7 and 8. These lugs are formed integral with the handle and it is by the means of these lugs and the perforations 9, 10, 11 and 12 therein that my handle is secured to the bag with which it is to operate. I secure the handle by passing a rivet through each of the perforations and through perforations in the bag which are arranged in coincidental alinement with the perforations in the lugs. It will be noted that I have provided a rib 13 and 14 in line and connecting the lugs 5, 6, 7 and 8,

these ribs strengthen and support the lugs and also give it the appearance of independently formed cleats which are usually used with leather handles.

In describing my handle I have referred to it as a metallic handle. It is formed from a single sheet or strip of metal and is for the most part, and particularly through the entire grip portion, tubular as indicated at Fig. 8. The closing edge extends through the center line and across the bottom or inner side of the handle and it will be seen that the edges are brought close together so that the inner side of the handle may be smooth.

What is generally termed the parting line is shown in the bottom plan view, Fig. 2 and is there indicated as the lines 15.

From the plan view in Fig. 2 it will be noted that while the grip portion 1 is formed tubular and therefore of two thicknesses of metal, the lugs and tabs are of one thick ness of metal. I have found that it is quite as satisfactory to form the lugs and tabs of a single metal strip or of extensions from the grip member 1.

From the peculiar shape of the handle it is evident that it will be not only easier but simpler and cheaper to form the lugs and tabs from a flat strip and of a single thickness, and in addition it allows these parts to lie more closely adjacent to the surfaces upon which they are to beformed.

In Fig. 4, I show a handle 16 provided with a ring 17. This handle is also formed statement that the tabs may be of any conv tabs may be formed of double thickness of metal or that the edges thereof may be turned in to strengthen these parts, but I do not consider that the additional complications necessary to accomplish this, would materially add to the strength or thickness of my device.

Having carefully and fully described my invention what I claim and desire to. secure by Letters Patent is 1. A handle for bags and the like consisting of a tubular member having securing lugs adapted to be secured to the surface of a bag and steadying tabs formed integral therewith as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A metallic handle for bags and the like comprising a grip formed of a tubular member flattened to a convenient shape, a reduced portion at each end of said grip, a tab formed integral with each reduced portion and a plurality of lugs between each said tab and the grip and formed integral therewith for securing the handle to a bag, as and for the purpose set forth.
