AUGUSTE JAQUES, OF LA CHAUX-DE-FONDS, SWITZERLAND.
WINDING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1916.
Application filed December 1, 1915. Serial N 0. 64,523.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUsTE JAQUES, manufacturer, citizen of Saints Croix, Switzerland, residing at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Winding Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the winding and setting devices of watches and has for its main object to provide means for closing hermetically the aperture between the pendant and the winding and setting-stem so as to prevent effectually the entrance of dust ormoisture within the watch-case through such aperture. In accordance with the invention provision is made whereby a washer may be held in compression between the crown and the edge of the pendant when the stem is in its normal or winding position, and provision is also made whereby the stem may be pulled out sufliciently to permit the dust-band of the movement to be removed, but without completely disengaging the stem from the case. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows in a single figure, in a sectional view, so much of the winding and setting mechanism of a watch with the case and pendant as is necessary to enable the invention to be understood.
The crown A is screwed as usual upon the outer extremity of the windingand setting-stem F, which passes centrally through the pendant B. The stem is provided with cones 0, (Z and e and also with a square or abutting shoulder K, for engagement with a detent sleeve D, which is slitted longitudinally to give elasticity. This detent sleeve has at its inner end an external flange by which the detent is held in place, with a slight amount of play, between the internal. flange of the pendant B and a sleeve C which is screw-threaded within the pendant.
In the normal or winding position of the stem F the lip of the detent D engages the cone surface 0 and holds the stem against outward movement except when the crown is pulled out by hand. Since this is the normal position of the stem, it is when the stem is in this position that the aperture through the pendant should be closed hermetically. Accordingly there is interposed between the crown A and the edge of the pendant B a compression washer E, which may be an annulus of corrugated metal, arranged to bear against the under side of the crown and against the edge of the pendant, and held in compression through the engagement of the detent D with the cone 0, thus making a hermetically tight joint and preventing the entrance of dust and moisture.
When the hands are to be set, the crown is pulled out, drawing the cone 0 through a detent D, which then engages the cone (Z and prevents further unintended movement of the stem. In this position the stem, through devices well understood and not necessary to be shown or described herein, is disengaged from the winding mechanism and is engaged operatively with the setting mechanism.
If it is desired to remove the dust-band from the case, it is necessary to pull the stem F outward still further. The cone d is then pulled through the detent and the movement of the stem is limited by the shoulder K which comes in contact with the lip of the detent d. The cone surface 6 then engages the outer surface of the lip of the detent, preventing the accidental inward movement of the stem, but permitting the stem to be pushed in when desired.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a watch, the combination of a watchcase and pendant, a winding-stem, a crown and a compression washer interposed between the under side of the crown and the edge of the pendant to close the aperture be tween the stem and the pendant.
2. In a watch, the combination of a case and pendant, a coned winding-stem, a detent to engage the same, a crown and a compression washer interposed between the under side of the crown and the edge of the pendant to close the aperture between the stem and the pendant.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTE JAQUES.
