ELLSWORTH W. S. DAAB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEVEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLSWORTH V. S. DAAB, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to levels and more particularly to an attachment therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved level device or measure whereby two determining quantities may be ascertained through use of the device as a level and subsequently, through simple multiplication, the determined quantity quickly ascertained without a re-use or second application of the device.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a View of my improved level in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is an end view; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly broken away; and Fig. 5 is a similar view, the section being taken transversely to that of Fig. 4.
Like numerals of reference designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Coming now to a description of the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a stock equipped with horizontal and plumb spirit levels of an accepted design, the spirit levels being designated respectively 2 and 3 and inlaid in a manner old in the art. The stock 1 is cut away at one end as indicated at 4 to receive a knob 5 and protector plate 6 therefor, the latter, plate 6, being aflixed as at 7 to the stock 1 in such relation to the mentioned knob as to receive the wear and tear incident to manipulation of the latter as nates in such adjacency to the knob '5 as to Specification of Letters Patent.

afford a bearing surface 13 for the operating rod 12. The opposite end of the mentioned rod is journaled as indicated at let in a plate 15 aflixed as at 16 to the under side or edge of the level stock, the said plate also affording a closure at the base terminalof the recess 8.
Longitudinal flanges 17 are formed upon and at opposite sides of the rod 9 to operate within complemental grooves 18 therefor formed in the stock 1 of the level, the engagement of the parts thus mentioned precluding casual displacement of the rod and directing its movement during adjustment through manipulation of the knob.
Graduation marks 19 are arranged prefv erably at opposite sides of the recess and upon metallic protector plate 20, the marks thus provided indicating. to the user the movement, in inches, of the rod 9. As shown to advantage in Fig. 3 rod 9 has been moved seven siXteenths of an inch, each inch being subdivided into a sixteenth part.
The periphery of the knob 5 is graduated as indicated at 21, the graduation marks dividing the circumference of the knob into sixteen equal parts. The graduation marks are adapted for registry with a mark 22 formed on the plate 20 directly beneath the knob. The teeth on the worm gear structure 11 are of a suitable pitch whereby to move the rod 9 one-sixteenth of an inch incident to a complete revolution of the knob. By such an arrangement, and by so graduating the knob and the mentioned plate, it is apparent that the rod 9 may be accurately adjusted to a two-hundred and fifty-sixth of an inch.
In use, the length of the level will afford one of the known quantities, the distance between the top end of the rod 9, and the top of the recess 8, the other of the known quantities, while the unknown quantity to be determined is ascertained by multiplication.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description. as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the proportion and arrangement of parts may 1 be -resorted to, when required, Without'sac rificing any of the advantages of my inven tion, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to se a cure by Letters Patent, is': 1
vided with graduation marks at one side of said recess, means turnable to slide the measuring device, said means being provided With graduation marks upon its periphery to ascertain with accuracy the degree of movement of the measuring device.
3. The combination With a level, of a slide device mounted in a recess therefor at one end of the level, the level being graduated at one side of the recess, means turnable to Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each; by addressing Washington, D. 0.
slide the device, one complete revolution of said means moving said device the distance between adjacent 'graduations at the side thereof, said means being in turn graduated toindicate the degree of movement of said device intermediate the marks first mentioned.
.4. The combination with a level, of a slide member located in a recess therefor formed in the level at one end thereof, said recess having lateral recesses, projections on the slide for engaging the lateral recesses, and turnable means mounted to engage said slide member to move the same one complete revolution of said means moving said slide a predetermined distance indicated by graduation marks at the end of the level, said means being in turn graduated to indicate to a greater degree of minuteness the movement of the slide when it is desired accurate adjustment be afforded.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
