Y Be it known that I, MARY E. WATSON, a

l citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use- Yful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to mattresses and seeks to provide simple and effective means for strengthening or bracing the tick vory covering of theiinattress, so thaty the matthe strengthening braces applied thereto,

portions of the braces being broken away to more clearly show the folds in the covering. Fig.. 3 is a partial perspective view illustrating a modified form. Fig. 4f is a view of the inner face of the covering shown in Fig. 3. Fig.' 5'is a view similar to Fig. 4 illustrating a further modification.

The mattress tick is formed, as usual, of a top covering a and a similar bottom covering which is connected to the top covering by a side or edge wall b. The edge wall b is sewed to the side and end edges of the top and bottom coverings. The mattress may be filled with any suitable materia-l, such as layers of cotton felt. The iilling material is held in place by rows of tufts o which are preferably arranged to produce biscuit forms upon the surface of the mattress.

As usual, the dimensions of the top, bottom and edge coverings a and o exceed some- Vwhat the dimensions of the finished mattress, the fullness inthe tick or covering :being taken up in the tufting operation and tion, that is to say, in a direction at right angles to the length of the mattress. To prevent this stretching, the top and bottom coverings are each provided with a series of flat, transverse, bracing straps a? -which extend at regular intervals across the inner .faces thereof and which are sewed to the coverings. As indicated in the drawings,

these straps are preferably sewed to the coverings by rows of stitches l that ex- .,tend lengthwise of the straps and adjacent the edges thereof. v

The transverse bracing straps Z preferably extend entirely across tlie tick or covering a, the length of each strap being substantially equal to the width of a iinished mattress. I nasmuch as the width of the covering a is greater than that of the finished mattress, tucks or folds mustl be yformed therein in order to permit the application of the straps thereto. The transverse straps are arranged, as shown, between the transverse rows of tufts o and, in

`the form shown inFigs.` land 2, the covering a is provided, between the tufts, with a number of series or rows of diagonal, intersecting folds or plaits 2 across which the straps Z extend.

While, as stated, the mattress in use tends to stretch much more in lateral thanin lon- I gitudinal direction, the top and bottom 'coverings a are also preferably provided with a series of straps e, similar to the transverse straps d, which extend across the inner face of the covering between the longitudinal rows of tufts. The tucks 2 are formed in the top and bottomv coverings a and the held in place until the straps are: applied by stitches 3. The cross marks 4 in Fig. 2 indicate the points at which the tufting stitches are formed after the complete tick is filled with suitablematerial, such as cotton felt or the like.

It should be noted that the tucks 2 and the bracing straps @Z and e are arranged between the rows of tufts, so that-ample fullness is provided in the top and bottom coverings for the tufting operation. At the same time, the straps serve to retain the shape of the 'f ioo stronger than the weft threads, extend across or at right angles to Athewarp threads ofthe covering. In this way, the transverse -stretching of the tick covering is effectively prevented and at the same time sufficient fullness is provided for the tufting stitches.

The form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is similar tothatshown in: Figs. l and 2, except thatv the top-and bottom coverings a are provided `with a number of rows vor series of tucks for folds 5 which extend in longitudinal and transverse direction between the tufts vand the diagonal folds,.such as shown in Figs.V landk 2, areoinitted. In this form, the folds are larrangedat right angles to the strapsv alv and e and to the rows of stitches l, and the folds may be formed in the covering as the straps are sewed thereto. For this reason, it is not necessary to preliminarily sew the folds in place before the straps are applied.

The form shown in Fig. 5 is similar to that shown in Fig. 4, except that the longitudinal straps and thetransverse folds are omitted. 35 It is `obvious that numerous changes may be made"infthe details set forth without departure from the essentialsof'the invention asideiined in the claims.

6. A-mattress or the like havinga cover, portions of which are folded fto inwardly project, and lines of stitching `extending `transversely of such folded portions kbetween the ends thereof and maintaining the formation of the same.

7. A mattress or the like having a cover,

8. A mattress or :the like having acover, portions of which are folded'to Iinwardly project, and lines of stitching extending transversely of lsuch folded portions fand maintaining the formation of fthe same; said lcover being provided with: tufts between Lwhich the'` cover folds extend, and ysaid lines ofstitching being arranged -to `intersect the folds intermediate of the tufts.

9. A mattressor the like having a cover, portions `of which are .foldedl to .inwardly project, and ylines of stitching extending transversely of `such folded :portionsand maintaining the formation .of the same; said cover being provided' with tufts between which lthe cover '-folds extend, and said lines of :stitching being arranged toiintersectthe ,folds vintermediate of ithe tufts; lreinforcements being provided for :thecover and beingco-extensive with Vthe lines of stitching.

A mattress comprising an outer ticking and a suitable filling material and having a series of longitudinal and transverse rows of tufts, the to-p and bottom portions of said ticking having a series of folds extending longitudinally of the mattress in alinement with the tufts forming the longitudinal rows to provide fullness for the tufts,

and a series of straps stitched substantially throughout their length to the top and bottom portionspof the ticking, said straps eX- tending transverselv of the mattress between the transverse rows of tufts and extending across said folds intermediate their ends.

I13. A mattress comprising an outer ticking and a suitable filling material and having a series of longitudinal and transverse rows of tufts, the top and bottom portions of said ticking having a series of rows of longitudinal and transverse folds in alinement with the respective longitudinal and transverse rows of tufts to provide fullness for the tufts, and a series of longitudinal and transverse straps stitched'to the top and bottom portions of said ticking between the rows of tufts, the transverse straps being stitched across the longitudinal folds and the longitudinal straps being stitched across the transverse folds intermediate the ends Y of the folds.

14. A mattress comprising an ing and a suitable` filling material and having longitudinal and transverse rows of tufts, and inelastic bracing straps equal in length to the width of the finished mattress stitched substantially throughout their length to the top and bottom portions of the ticking between the transverse rows of tufts.
