Description

c. s. SWENSON.
REIN GUARD FOR NECK YOKES.
' APPLICATION HLED JAN- 26.1916. 1,201,890.
CHARLES s. SWENSON, or 'ro nA, NORTH DAKOTA.
REIN-GUARD FOR. NECK-YOKES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17', 1916.
- Applicationfiled. January 26, 1916'. Serial No. 74,378.
To all'whom it may concern: o
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. SWENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tolna, in the county of Nelson and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Guards for Neck-Yokes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a rein guard for neck yokes.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of neck yokes and to provide a simple, practical, and comparatively inexpensive device, adapted to be readily attached to a neck yoke and capable of forming a guide and a guard for the reins to prevent the same from becoming entangled in the neck yoke and interferingv with the proper management of a team.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rein guard of this character which will yieldably engage the reins and prevent too sudden a strain on the same and to secure an easy operation of the reins in the guide or guard.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and. pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advan tages of the invention.
In the drawlng Figure 1 1s a front elevation of a neck yoke provided with a rein guard constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken centrally through the neck yoke and the rein guard.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a neck yoke having mounted upon its upper face an arched support 2 constructed of strap metal or other suitable material and having terminal attaching portions 3 secured by bolts 4: or other suitable fastening devices to the neck yoke at opposite sides of the center of the same The bolts 4 pierce the attaching porcentral opening 7 in which is mounted a bolt or rod 8 having a lower threaded end 9 for the reception of a nut 10 and'the said rod or member 8, is provided at its upper end with a ring 11 through which pass the reins (not shown). The rod or member 8 is provided at its upper portion with a washer or disk 12 located beneath the ring 11 and forming a bearing for an upper coiled spring 13 interposed betweenthe arched support 2 and the said disk or washer 12. The rod or member 7 also carries a lower coiled spring 14: interposed between a disk or washer 15. The upper and lower springs yieldably mount the rein receiving member and enable the same to yield upwardly and. downwardly. The rein guard is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction; it is adapted to be readily applied to a neck yoke and is capable of preventing the lines from becoming entangled in the neck yoke and interfering with the management of a team.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a neck yoke, of a support mounted on the neck yoke and provided with an opening, a rod slidable through the opening and provided at the outer end with a rein guide and coiled springs disposed on the rod and located above and below the support for cushioning the rod in its upward and downward movement. A
2. The combination with a neck yoke of an arched support mounted upon the neck yoke and provided with an opening, a rod slidable through the opening and provided at the outer end with a rein guide and coiled springs disposed on the rod and located above and below the arched support for cushioning the rod in its upward and downward movement.
3. The combination with a neck yoke of an arched support having terminal attach ing portions, fastening means piercing the attaching portions and the neck yoke, a rod piercing the support centrally thereof and slidable through the same, said rod having threaded end of the rod for controlling the a threaded'lower end and provided at the tension of the spring. v 10 upper end with a rein receiving ring, up- In testimony whereof I affix my signature per and lower coiled springs mounted on the in presence of two witnesses.

ward and downward movement thereof and R. M. KmAND,
an adjusting nut carried by the lower GEO. Oi Maeons.
copiel' of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patentl, Washington, I). 0. n
