To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, EMIL H. A. BoLLBUoK, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, re-
.siding at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brick-Kilns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brick-kilns in which removable partitions are provided to form suitable chambers for continuously burning bricks consecutively in the several chambers and the objects of my improvements are, to improve the heating capability of such kilns; to provide the burners from the top of the kiln in conjunction with smoke-flues suitably arranged in the floor and the side-walls of the kiln; and to provide hollow partitions of which the hollow inside is adapted to be filled up with sand or suitable material for shutting ofi one of the chambers in the kiln after the bricks in that chamber have been burned; the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a part of the kiln on line 11 of Fig. 4. Fig. 2 is a similar view on line 22 of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the kiln on line 3-3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4.4 of Figs. 1, 2 anld 3. Fig. 5 is a top view of a part of the ki 11.

The kiln consists of the outer end walls 1,
' i the side walls 2, see Fig. 4; the floor 3, the
center wall 4 and the top 5. A suitable number of door openings 6 are provided in the side walls 2 allowing the carrying in of the bricks into the kiln. Together with the bricks built up in the different chambers, a partition 7 is built in from the same unburned bricks spaced from the floor as indicated at 8 and also spaced from the top as indicated at 9, forming these chambers. As long as the bricks in two adjacent chambers are being burned, these partitions 7 are loose enough set that the bricks in the partitions are also burned, but as soon as the bricks in one chamber are done, this chamber should be shut off from the draft and heat. In my device I do this by building a hollow or double partition wall 7 The space 10 in the partition wall is filled up with sand or a suitable material from the top closing that burned chamber. In cases where not much room shall be used for these double partitions, I i apply a coat of clay or similar material to one side of the partition making that side airtight while the farther side of that partition is set loose enough to allow a burning of the bricks in that kind of partition walls. In such cases the lower spaces 8 below the partitionsare closed by a gate, notshown in the drawing.
Burners'll are suitably arranged on the top of the kiln, see Fig. 1, allowing the introduction of gas, or liquid fuel with steam or water mixtures by a suitable number of pipes 12. A suitable distance below the burner, a distributing pan 13 is disposed above the built bricks. This distributing pan is made of fire brick or a similar material. Below the fioor, the flues 14: are built in for directing the used-up or waste heat out of the kiln into the chimney, the waste heat entering the flues through the vents 15 in the floor and the vents 16 near the floor in the side and center walls.
A main flue 17, formed in the center wall terminates in the chimney, not shown in the drawing, and also communicates with the flues 1 1 below the floor. Valves 18, see Fig. 2, are disposed over the communicating openings 19, see Fig. 4. By closing'one of these communicating openings 19, the draft in the corresponding chamber is shut off from the chimney and naturally the heat from that chamber is drawn into and through the next chambers through the loosely set partitions and through the spaces below and above the partitions, and thus the heat is practically used up before the waste enters the chimney through vents 15 v and 16 and through the flues 14.
After the bricks in one chamber are done or burned enough, the burners in that chamber are turned off and the partition is shut off as described above, by putting sand into the hollow partitions, or shutting off the spaces below the partitions by a suitably disposed gate. The only space left open is above the distributing pan allowing the heat accumulated in that chamber to slowly escape into the next chamber. Parallel to and above the main fiue, is a waste-heat flue 20, see Figs. 2 and 3, having communicating making the waste-heat flue a closed chamber Without any outlet, but in case that a newlyset chamber shall be warmed up before the burners in that chamber are turned open, the heat from a heated chamber is drawn off through an overflow box 21 inserted into one of the communicating openings 23 and from the waste-heat flue this heat is directed through another overflow box 22 into the newly-set chamber. It will easily be understood that in this manner the heat from the chamber on one end of the kiln can be directed through the waste-heat fine to a newly-set chamber on the other end of the kiln. A metal coat 26 is inclosed in the center wall at making it airtight. he top of the kiln is provided with a suitable number of openings 24 for the burners, and other openings 25 for peep-holes.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A device for the purpose described consisting of a normally closed chamber having a suitable number of normally closed fillopenings from the sides vent-openings from the lower part of the chamber and heat openings from the top, burners inserted into the heat openings from the top, and removable hollow partitions spaced from the bot tom and from the top, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A device for the purpose described consisting of a normally closed chamber having a suitable number of normally closed fillopenings in the side-walls of the chamber vent-openings in the bottom and heat openings in the top, a corresponding number of burners inserted into the chamber through the heat openings from the top, distributing pans disposed a suitable distance below the burners, exchangeable hollow partitions built in at suitable places in the chamber spaced from the bottom and from the top forming sub-chambers communicating by the spaces below and above the partitions, and a suitable filling inserted through the hollow partition walls into the spaces below the partitions.
3. 5. A device for the purpose described con sisting of a normally closed chamber having a suitable number of normally closed fillopenings, vent-openings, and heat-openings; removable partitions built in at suitable places spaced from the bottom and from the top within the chamber; said partitions dividing the chamber in subchambers; the said partitions being also provided with vertical channels whereby tie spaces below the partitions communicate with the outside of the chamber from the top; and a suitable filling inserted into and through the channels in the partitions filling up the spaces below the partitions.
