Beit known that I, WILLLIM A. EUDALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsV in Brick and Tile Kilns, of
which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanyingl drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in kilns forburning brick, tile, and other ceramic ware.
The object of my invention is to construct a double kiln in such a manner that aperfect comi bustion of the gases and fuel canat all times be insured, and at the same time an equal distribution of the heat attained; and to this end my invention consists in the construction of a double kiln the partition or dividing `wall of which is provided with vertical ilues, which 4 form chimneys, and with horizontal flues controlled by dampers, by which means the kiln can be readilychanged from a double kiln to two separate and distinct kilns, each having its own furnaces, and provided with flues or chimneys in the out-er and in the partition wall, which are adapted to be controlled by j scribed hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

The iioor of the kiln is composed of a series of solid benches of masonry, E, which extend from the ground to the level of the floor of the kiln, and running the entire width of the kiln.

It will be noticed that the construction of the furnaces and iiues is the same' on both sides of the partition-wall, and that the kilns can be made to operate independently of each other byclosing the Iiues G by means of the dampers or valves K; but when it is desired to drive off the water-smoke ofthe adjacent kiln, or burn the lower courses of brick in the adjacent kiln to a greater extent, the dampers K are opened and the dampers in the chimneys H and I closed. This will cause the heat or products of combustion to pass through the ilues G under the partition-walls C, and be distributed through the Wares in the adjacent kiln, as indicated by the arrows 1 in Fig. 2. It'will also be noticed that when it is desired to burn the Wares in the lower corners of the kiln nearest the furnaces, that, by closing the lines G and the chimneys II and opening the drafts in the chimneys I, the heat will be drawn down to that portion of the kiln, as indicated by the arrows 2 in Fig. 2; and, furthermore, it' it is desirable to concentrate the heat in any particular portion of the kiln, this can be readily done by leaving the lues and chimneys open at that point, and closing all other ports of egress. By'this construction and operation of a brick-kiln, the man in charge of the kiln can have complete control over all portions of the kiln, and thus insure a uniform burning of all the bricks contained therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S-
1. A kiln provided with a partition-wall in 4which are located chimneys communicating with and extending from the continuous ilues at the bot-tom of the kiln only and leading to above and beyond the kiln-roof.
2. In a double kiln, continuous lues situuated in the bottom of the kiln, and running under the partition-wall, and adapted to bedivided at the partition-wall by dampers or cutoffs, as set forth.
3. In a kiln of the character described, the continuous iiues, extending from side to side of the kiln, in combination wit-h the partitionwalls C and dampers K, as set forth.
4. In a kilnwall, air-chambers situated at the sides of the eye of the kiln, and within the walls of the kiln, arranged as described, so that the escaping heat from the kiln is made to pass through said air-chambers by means of chimneys situated Within said air-chambers.
5. In a brick-kiln, the combination of the flues G, provided with dampers K, with the lateral or diagnal iiues L and chimneys' H,
