Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KLooKE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, the city and State of New York, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a drawing press adapted to do very heavy work, and aims to provide an improved construction thereof.
To this end my invention consists in providing the said drawing press with twin crank shafts for operating sliding counterweights by which the blank-holder is driven, and in providing equalizing means between the cranks and counterweights whereby the alinementof the blank-holder is at all times preserved. 1
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of a drawing press constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, partly broken.
My invention is illustratedas applied to a double crank toggle drawing press.
The press illustrated is of the type employing a stationary bed. A, a movable blank-holder B, and a movable plunger C.
A pair of crank shafts D, D are provided,
and these crank shafts operate a pair of sliding counterweights E, E The press is provided with a pair of rock shafts F, F Which'are rocked from the counterweights and operate the blank-holder through togles. g For the extremely large and heavy press illustrated I provide two crank shafts to move the blank-holder. These crank shafts transmit their strain through the counterweights E, E and a connection is provided from each crank shaft to a counterweight. In order to remove the liability of one crank shaft operating slightly in advance of the other and thereby tilting the blank-holder, my invention provides an equalizer between each crank shaft and the respective counterweights, and by means of this the counterweight is always held in alinement, irrespective of any slight irregularity in the action of the respective crank shafts.
A complete description of the press con- I follows: The base A and the orosshead A are held together by four tie rods a situated at or near the respective corners'of the press. on each end gears d, d, and the crank shaft D has similar gears (5 only one of which, however, is seenin Fig. 2. The crank shafts are driven through these gears by means of suitable driving connections not illustrated.
Each of the gears d, d is provided with a crank pin (1 and from each crank pin a link 2 is pivoted to the equalizer 03*. This equalizer is in the form of a bar which is pivoted to the counterweight at d at or about the center ofthe bar, and the links to the respective crank pins are each attached at or near the end of the said bar.
This arrangement of gears, counterweights, crank pins, links and equalizer is duplicated on each side of the press. The rock shafts F, F are situated respectively at the front and rear of the press, and are rocked from the counterweights through links 7 which are pivoted to the counterweight, and also to arms 7 which are fixed upon the rock shafts. Between each rock shaft and the blank-holder B a plurality. of toggles B, B are situated, four such toggles being employed, which are connected respectively two to the front rock shaft and two to the rear rock shaft'at or near the ends of the said shafts. .These toggles are a'djustably connected to the blank-holder B to permit of suitable adjustment of the same relative to the bed A. The stay rods a carry side frames G, G ,.upon the outer sides of which are ways 9, g in which the respective counterweights E, E slide, and upon the inner sides of which are similar ways 9 for the blank-holder. The main shaft D is provided with cranks d a? for the operation of the plunger, and the crank shaft D is provided with similar cranks which are not shown. Links 03' 03 upon the crank shafts D, D are connected to the plunger C, four such links being provided. The counterweights E, E in addition to being guidedin ways g 9 are also guided attheir upper ends in channels formed in the extended ends of the crosshead A.

- ing to wear or'for any other reason, should travel slightly in advance of the other shaft, and the link were connected directly from the crank pin to the counterweight, it' would tend to tilt the counter weight slightly in its ways, and this would cause one side of the blank-holder to be operated by the coun.-
terweight slightly in advance of the other side. This tendency I overcome by the provision of the equalizer between the crank pins and the counterweights, whereby any unevenness in the movement of the crank shafts will be compensated for and the same will not affect the even operation of the blank-holder.
I have illustrated my invention as applied to a type of press having a movable blank-holder situated above a stationary bed and a plunger which is forced down in its operative stroke. M invention is not nec essarily limited in its application to this particular type of press, but maybe applied to other known types of press wherein these parts are differently arranged.
I have illustrated the most desirable'form of constructing my invention now known to me, but do not consider that the same is limited to the precise details of construction.

'What is claimed is 1. In a press of the character described a movable blank-holder, counterweights at the ends thereof, a pair of crank shafts,
cranks on each shaft for driving both said counterweights, and operating toggles between each counterweight and the blank+ holder 2. In a p ress of substantially the character described a pair of shafts, a counterweight, driving connections from each of said shafts to said counterweight, and an equalizer in said connections.
8. In a press of substantially the character described a pair of crank shafts, acounterweight, cranks on said shafts for driving said counterweight, an equalizer between said cranks and counterweight, a movable blank-holder, and operating connections between said counterweight and blank-holder.
4. In a press of the character described a pair of shafts, a blank-holder, counterweights on each end of the blank-holdeiyopcrating connections to each of said counter- Weights from both said shafts, and an equalizer in each of said connections.
5. In a press of the character described a pair of shafts, a blank-holder, counterweights on each end of the blank-holder, op-
crating connections to each of said counterweights from both said shafts, an equalizer in each of said connections, and a plurality of operating toggles between said counter- I weights and blank-holder.
6. In a press of the character described a pair of crank shafts, a movable blankholder, counterweights on each end of the a pair of crankshafts, a movable blankholder, counterweights on each end of the blank-holder, cranks for each counterweight on both said shafts, an equalizing bar pivoted to each counterweight, connecting links between said cranks and bars, a pair of rock shafts, rocking connections thereto from said counterweights, and a pair of toggles between each rock shaft and the blankfholder.
8. In a press of the character described a. pair of crank shafts, a blank-holder, a plunger, a counterweight, an operating connection to said counterweight from both said shafts, a plurality of operating toggles between said counterweight and said blankholder, and crank connections from each of said shafts to said plunger.
9..In a press of the character described a pair of crank shafts, a blank-holder, a plunger, counterweights on each side of the blank-holder, cranks for each counterweight on both said shafts, a pair of rock shafts, rocking connections thereto from both said counterweights, a pair of toggles between each rock shaft and the blank-holder, and
a pair of crank connections from each crank shaft to the plunger.
10.
