INVENTOR WITNESSES:
I. I I 1 WILLIAM KLOGKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR IO E. W. BLISS COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
rnnss.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KLocKn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide an improved press for bending metal and especially for the bending of long articles, such for example as the parts of automobile or other vehicle frames.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the ma chine partly in section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan, partly in horizontal section at different planes.
Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated, an upper fixed die holder A and a lower movable die holder B are provided, dies of suitable shape being fastened thereon in accordance with the character of the work.
The machine is provided with a number of posts C passing through lower cross supports D and through the base E which extends continuously from end to end. The length of the machine is divided into a number of panels or parts by the locating of the cross supports D and posts 0 at intervals.
Extending continuously along the machine at the top is the continuous cross beam F in the under side of which the upper die is carried, and which takes the reaction of the upper die continuously along its length, as the base E takes the reaction from the lower die.
The lower die carrier B is guided upon the several posts C by tubular guides Gr. Its movement is obtained by means of a series of toggle mechanisms spaced at numerous short intervals along its length, so as to communicate a substantially uniform pressure along the length of the work, and to minimize bending strains upon the .die and carrier and imperfections in the Work. Preferably two such toggles are arranged in each panel of the machine, the toggles along the entire length of the apparatus being equally spaced. The toggle links are H and J, the latter constituting also an arm upon a shaft K having a similar arm L which is Specification of Letters Patent.

oscillated by the toggle actuating link M. In each panel of the machine between the two toggles H and J an actuating arm L and link M are located, so as to give a balanced strain. The several actuating links M are driven by means of cranks N on a shaft 0 running continuously alongside the frame of the machine inlaterally extending bearings P and actuated from a driving shaft Q at a slow speed through the intermediation of pinions and gears R S T U V and W, with a ratio for the complete system of 120 to 1. The level of the floor from which the work is controlled is indicated at X.
An important feature of the invent-ion is the division of the toggle shaft K into short lengths as shown in Fig. 1, each equal to one of the panels of the machine so that each unit or element of the apparatus can work independently of the others. The twisting strains can be much reduced and the apparatus can be arranged to operate upon work pieces of various lengths.
A wedge is used for adjusting the fixed die A. The adjustment is made substantially uniform throughout the length of the die, without calling for a wedge of too great thickness by dividing the face of the adjusting wedge Y into a series of short inclines Z engaging corresponding inclines upon the top of the die holder A, each of the inclines Z being of suflicient length to take care of the amount of adjustment which will probably be required, and the movement of the adjusting wedge being effected by means of adjusting bolts a I) carried in supports 0 (Z upon the fixed cross beam F of the machine and engaging opposite ends of the adjusting wedge so as to shift the latter to the right or to the left as occasion demands.
That I claim is 1. A press for shaping vehicle frames or the like, including in combination an elongated die, a plurality of separate shafts and a plurality of actuating devices engaging said shafts and engaging said die at a plu rality of points along its length.
2. A press for shaping vehicle frames or the like, including in combination an elongated die, and a plurality of separate shafts and toggles between said shaft and said die and engaging said die at a plurality of points along its length.
3. A press for shaping vehicle frames or the like, including in combination, an elongated die, a plurality of shafts in fixed bearings, and means operated by each of said shafts for actuating said die.
4. A press for shaping vehicle frames or the like, including in combination an elongated die, a plurality of shafts in fixed bear ings, and a toggle between each of said shafts and a part of said die.
5. A press for shaping vehicle frames or the like, including in combination an elongated die, plurality of shafts in fixed bearings, a toggle between each of said shafts and a part of said die, and a common shaft for actuating the several toggles simultaneously.
. 6. A press for shaping vehicle frames or the like, including in combination a pair of elongated carriers A and B, a plurality of toggles H and/J engaging the carrier B at a plurality of points along its length, said toggles being arranged in pairs with the members J of each pair constituting arms on a common shaft, and an operating arm L onsaid shaft between the members J of said pair.
7. A press for shaping vehicle frames or the like, including in combination a fixed die holder A, a movable die holder B, a shaft K WILLIAM KLOCKE.
