IMPROVEMENT IN HUB-MORTISING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent NLo. 120,117, dated October 17, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER SNYDER, of the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in HubMorti'sing Machines, of which the following is a specification:
present invention consists of a series of devices,
to be hereinafter explained, so arranged and operated that an automatic longitudinal movement is given to a traveling box containing a chiselshaft and revolving bit or auger-shaft, by which it is propelledforward and backward, thereby causing a chisel and anger or bit to work against and in a hub; the said hub being arranged so to revolve as to regulate the distance of one mortise from another, and so operated, by the means hereinafter described, that the chisel will work against it at opposite angles, thus forming the two sides of a mortise. My invention also consists of a series of devices so arranged and operated as to allow a hub of any length or diam eter to be adjusted and mortised also, of so arranging and' operating a so-called dish that a mortise may be cut so as to allow of a spoke being inserted at any desired inclination, together with several other minor arrangements for gauging, regulating, and operating my improved machine that will be hereinafter more fully described.
In Fig. I A A represent the bedpiece of my machine, to which are attached standards g 1',
formed with grooved ways in which a chisel-box,
F F, travels longitudinally. Attached to and moving with the chisel-box F F is an auger-shaft, e, which revolves in boxes on m affixed to each end of the chisel-box F F. The shaft 6 is formed with a collar provided with a set-screw, by means of which the auger may be adjusted to any required position with reference to the chisel U. Attached to the bed-piece AA is a yoke, h, formed with lugs through which the auger-shaft c freely revolves; between the lugs is a screw-pinion, L, attached to the auger-shaft c by means of a featherkey, so as not to lose itslongitudinalmotion while revolving with the shaft 6. Engaging with and operated by the screw-pinion L is a s-crewwheel, M, to the end of whose shaft is affixcd a frictionwheel, a. Attached to the bed-piece A A is a movable-box, a, Fig. II, through which turns a shaft, connected at one end with a friction-wheel, b, and having affixed to its other end a cam having two wings, c d, Fig. II. Connected with the movable box a is a crooked lever, 10, Fig. II, attached to which is a lever-rod, k, and lever k, connecting with a revolving rod, 1, to which are attached treadles w w. The lever 0 is supported and held in its position by means of the spring 1). On one side of the chisel-box F F are two tumbler-rollers, against which operate, in the manner hereinafter described, the cam-wings c d. X isa bit-pad, which is screwed into the auger-shaft c for the purpose of holding the auger or bit. W is a chisel-holder, provided with a set-screw by which the chisel U maybe regulated. S, Fig. I, represents a traveling table resting on the bed-piece A A, to which it is attached by means of bolts passing through slots formed in the table, so as to allow of its longitudinal movement. 0 is a dodge, supported on shafts a; a and w 10, Fig. III, which play transversely in boxes 2 2, Fig. I, so as to give a lateral motion to the dodge 0. Attached to the dodge G is a notched bar, y, in which fits a projection or arm, N, formed on a shaft, N, which is operated by a lever, O. Directly above and attached to the dodge O, by the device shown in Fig. IV and to be hereinafter explained, is a dish, B, formed with a slot, 5, through which passes a square hollow bolt, r, Fig. IV, the lower portion of which is formed with a circular flange and has a screw-thread formed on its upper part provided with a nut, q, fitting over the slot 5. Turning in the hollow bolt r is an inner bolt, 8, formed 011 a block D, which is merely an enlargement of the bolt 8, and which extends below the dodge O and is formed with a screw-bolt provided with a nut, f, Fig. V. The dish B turns with the hollow bolt 1' on the bolt 8. On the side of the dish B is a projection on which works the slotted end of a bent lever, V, working on a pivot at its elbow attached to the dodge O. E is a crank, attached to a screw-rod passing through blocks 10 and D, for the purpose of adjusting the dish B longitudinally. In Fig. I R R are two cups, designed dish B. Attached to the end of the shaft of the cup 1% is an index-wheel, I, on which is formed a ratchet-wheel, M, in which engages a pawlat tached to a lever, K,turning on the shaft of the ratchet-wheel M. Attached to the dish B is an adjustable slotted arm, G, to which is affixeda spring, H, connected with which, by a bolt passing through a slot formed on its upper portion,
' is a latch, 3, which extends down over the outside of the index-wheel I. Formed on the under side of the spring H, directly behind the latch 3, is a tooth which engages in notches formed on the index-wheel I. Connected with lever K is a hinge, 16,which extends down toward the indexwheel I and operates against the latch 3, and is held in place by a spring, 17. Connected with the lower portion of the lever K is a stop-r0d, L, which passes through a projection formed on the arm G, and is gauged by means of two screwnuts so that the index-wheel I is moved but one notch at a time and the hub is revolved the distance of one mortise to another. Attached to the table S are two posts, 6 6, each having two set-screws, S T S T, against which projections 11, formed on the lower portions of the boxes 14 14. of the dish B, are brought to bear, in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter mentioned. The dishB is provided on the front wit gibs, which slide underthe dodge O in order to hold the dish B in its place and to keep the front end from lifting up. The frame or table S, and, consequently, the dodge O and dish B, are carried backward and forward at pleasure, to suit the machine to hubs of various sizes, by means of a screw-rod working through a stationary nut, 8, and a box, 7, and operated by a crank, F. Each of the standards g t is furnished with four setscrews, as shown, designed to take up any wear that may be occasion ed by the use of the machine in the grooves of the standards 9 t, as well as to give a steady, firm movement to the chisel-box F F and auger-shaft e.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The hub is inserted in the hub-cups R It; by operating the lever Q, the shaft passing through the box 14 is moved laterally, thereby bringing the cup R against the hub where it is securely held by means of the set-screw 13. V Power being applied to the belt-pulley f the chisel-shaft e is made to revolve, carrying with it the screwpinion, which engages with and operates the screw-wheel M, thereby revolving the frictionwheel a. By applying pressure to the treadles w w the friction-wheel b is brought in contact with the friction-wheel a and motion is given to the shaft which revolves the cam-win gs c 01, so that the wing 01, striking against one of the rollers on forward, and the wing a, striking the other roller, drives the box F F backward, thus producing an automatic forward and backward longitudinal n1 o tion which drives the chisel in and out of the hub. The posts 6 6 are adjustable laterally with reference to the bed-piece A A. The dish B turns with the hollow bolt 1' on the bolt 8 and is operated by the bent lever V, so that when the dodge O is moved to one side one of the projections 11 is brought to bear against the set-screw S, thus placing the hub at an angle with the chiselbar which is then advanced and one side of the mortise is completed. By turning the crank E the block I), together with the bolts 8 1", is made to travel longitudinally in the slots formed in the dish B and dodge (3, allowing the radius or sweep of the dish to be increased or diminished and the angle of the mortise cut to be regulated accordingly. The dish B is oscillated to the other side so that the other projection 11 bears against the setscrew S, and the chisel-bar U is again'advanced and the other side of the mortise is formed. Whenever it is desirable the chisel and anger may be advanced to cut out the center of the mortise. By operating the lever O the projection or arm N is made to work in the notch formed ward lateral motion to the bar y,thereby imparting a lateral motion to the dodge O, by which means two rows of mortises can be made around the hub at one revolution. By operating the lever K the hub is revolved by means of the pawl engaging with the ratchet-wheel M, thus revolving the index-wheel I, and, at the same time, lifting, by means of the hinge 16, the latch 3 and tooth connected therewith out of the notch formed in the periphery of the index-wheel I, which is regulated by the nuts on the stop-rod L attached to the lever K so that it can be moved but one notch at a time, thus revolving the hub the distance of only one mortise to another. The dodge 0 is now moved to the other side bymeans of the lever O, the dish B is again oscillated by means of the lever V, as above described, the projection 11 striking against the set-screws T and T instead of S and S, thus cutting the second mortise. The hub is again revolved and the operation, as above described, continued until all the mortises are cut in the hub.
Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is-
1. The traveling-table S formed with the boxes 2 2 and adjustable posts 6 6, box 8, screw-rod and crank F, arranged and operated substantially as described.
2. The dodge O, with the shafts w 00 and w to, playing in the boxes 2 2, substantially as described.
3. The lever O, shaft N, projecting armN, in combination with the bar 3 for the purpose of giving a lateral motion to the dodge O, substantially as described.
4. The construction and arrangement of the hollow bolt 1', bolt 8, and block D, substantially as described.
the chisel-box F F, propels the chisel-box F F 5. The combination of the screw E with the on the bar y so as to produce a forward and back block D, bolts 1" and s, and slot 5, for the purpose of varying the radius or sweep of'the dodge G, substantially as described.
1 6. The dish B, constructed with the slot 5 and connected with the dodge O by the bolts 1" and s, and gibs, as set forth.
7. The arrangement of the set-screws S S- and T T in combination with the projections 11 or their equivalents, formed on the dish B, substantially as described.
8. The combination of the lever K provided with hinge 16 and spring 17, the ratchet-wheel M, and index-wheel I, stop-rod L, latch 3, and tooth on spring H, and arm Gr, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
9. The auger-shaft 0, formed with a feather-key working in a screw-pinion L so that the shaft 6 can pass longitudinally through the pinion at the Witnesses S. PARK Coon, ALFRED PUTNAM.
