To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALLEN TIM- BERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Delphi, in the county of Carroll and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Filing and Setting Band-Saws; and I do vice. My invention has relation to machines for filing and setting band-saws; and it consists in providing a construction whereby the operation of filing and setting may be simultaneously accomplished; furthermore, in providinga construction whereby the device may be employed simply for the purpose of filing the saw-teeth; furthermore, in providing a construction whereby the device may be employed simply for the purpose of setting the teeth; furthermore, in providing a construction whereby, after the file has traversed between a set of teeth, the jaws of the vise are automatically released and the saw moved the requisite distance to bring the next set of teeth in position forfiling, while the teeth in advance which have not been set are likewise brought into position. for setting; furthermore, in providing mechanism whereby the saw-files are made to semi-revolve, so that different files alternate in their operation, one file cutting in one direction and another file cutting in the opposite direction, thus filing the saw from alternate sides; and, furthermore, in various other details of construction, which will hereinafter more fully appear and be specifically referred toin thespecifieation.
. Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the bed-plate,
provided with a central irregular and clonguide-rollers E E, of rubber or equivalent in ateriahwhich facilitate the movement of the saw, and also serve the function hereinafter more fully explained.
f Turning in bearings F F, secured to the bottom of the bed-plate, isa transverse shaft G, having on one end a drive-wheel, and having mounted rigidly thereon, at or near its center, a cam or wiper wheel II, said wheel extending through the slot in the bed-plate. The periphery of this wheel H is provided with a series of inclines or projections h, while one side of the periphery or rim is provided with diametrically-opposite inclined or beveled cams h.
Upon the opposite side of the cam-wheel and mounted loosely upon the shaft is a laterally-ad j ustable cam I, having the inner face of the end thereof provided with a laterallyextending finger i, which passes loosely into a perforation if in the cam-wheel. The cam is also provided with a grooved hub 1 into which works a pawl .l'.
The end of the shaft opposite to that which carries the drive-wheel is provided with a crank K, having a suitable crank-wrist 70, working in a slotted yoke or arm L, and converting the rotary motion of the crank into rectilinear motion of the yoke or arm. The latter has also projecting therefrom and extending laterally and inwardly an extension I, which, when reciprocating works in a depression a in the bed-plate, and has secured in the countersunk end thereof the flat portion of a shaft M, said shaft being mounted in bearings N N in opposite ends of the bedplate. Extending from the opposite side of the yoke L is also a downwardly-extending rounded arm I, which is journaled in a suitable bearing a extending from the bed-plate. It will be seen that when motion is imparted to the slotted arm or yoke the latter willlikewise impart a reciprocating motion to the movable shaft ill. The central llat portion of the latter has extendingforwardlytherefrom bifurcated brackets O O. In the bracket 0 is secured, by a thumb-screw or equivalent P, a U-shaped bearing Q, and in the opposite bracket is secured, by means, also, of a thumb- Screw R, a bearing-block S. A longitudinal shaft T is mountedin these bearings, and is retained in the U-shaped bearing by means of a screw U. Mounted upon this shaft are the extended ends of a file-carriage V, said carriage consisting of the longitudinal piece r, the cross-pieces r r, and the end rectangular frame 1".
Turning in the free ends of the cross-pieces of the file-carriage is a shaft \V, provided with end file-brackets X X, in which are secured a series of files Y. (I have shown two in the drawings illustrating the device; but it is obvious more or less may be employed, if desired.) This shaft also extends through the rectangular auxiliary frame 1*, and with the same is surrounded by a worm ll, the latter adapted to be engaged by a pawl or dog Z, mounted upon a shaft A, having its bearings in said rectangular frame, one end of said shaft being bent rearwardly at right angles.
Upon the upper end of the bedplate is secured a track or way I), provided with end inclines Z) I) and with lateral] y-extendin g lugs .or cars 11 b Adapted to move and bear on this track or way is the end of an adjustable screw C, which passes through one angle of the auxiliary frame 27?.
It will be seen that when the drive-wheel is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow the main shaft will cause the crank upon the end thereof to actuate the slotted arm, which in turn reciprocates the slidiugarm or shaft M. The lilo-carriage being connected to this latter shaft in the manner hereinbefore described, the same will be moved vertically tl1erewith,wl1i1e the angle of one of the files will pass between one of the set of teeth of the saw. lVhen the file-carriage has traveled far enough for the screw 0 to ascend the inclined portion of the track or way, the file will be lifted out of engagement with the teeth of the saw, and as the carriage continues to travel in the same direction until the downwardly-bent end of the shaftA comesin contact with the outer lug or car b said shaft will be moved downward and the pawl or dog Z made to traverse the worm 10 upon shaft \V, and thereby partly revolve the file-brackets, so as to bring the next file in position for engagement with the saw. Upon the continuation of the turning of the drive-wheel the arm or shaft M and the file-carriage are made to travel in the opposite direction, and the moment the screw C descends the incline upon the track or way the file falls into engagement with the saw and remains in engagement therewith until the opposite incline is reached, when it is again thrown out of engagement, and soon thereafter the bent end of the shaft A engages with the inner lug or car of the track and again revolves the filebrackets for the action of the opposite file.
The file when passing between the teeth of the saw is held in firm engagement therewith by means of a coiled spring I),encireling the longitudinal shaft T, said spring having its free ends bearing upon thelongitudinal piece of the file-earriage and bent at or about its middle, so as to pass into a notched adj ustable collar E, said collar being made adjustable by means of a screw F, passing through the same and bearing against the shaft, by which means the tension of the spring may be rcadilyincreased or diminished, as desired.
The letter G represents the adjustable feed-arm, said arm being provided with an elongated slot g, which registers with a similar slot 7L in a guide block or box ll. One end of this adjustable feed-arm has secured thereto aplatel, to which is hinged a spring actuated pusher finger or arm J, said finger engaging the teeth of the saw and moving the same forward at the proper time. To assist in this operation, I have also provided the opposite edge of this end of the feed-arm with an auxiliary pusher-linger K, which is likewise spring-actuated and serves the purpose of helping over broken teeth, This fceddinger, however, is only used when the teeth become broken. \Vhen not in use, the spring is removed and the linger allowed to fall back out of the way. This last-mentioned feedfinger turns upon a transverse pin or bolt L, upon which its appropriate spring is also mounted.
The guide-box ll previously referred to is provided with lateral extensions 71? It, the oxtension it being provided with an enlongated slot 75', through which an adjusting-screw M passes. The opposite extension It is provided with a transverse bolt-hole 71 a thumbscrew N first pz'tssing through a standard against which said extension bears into the IIO transverse bolt-hole thereof. Both extensions above described are seated between lugs a a a a upon the bed-plate. The elongated slot 72 of this guide-box, as previously stated, registers with the elongated slot of the feedarm, a pivot-screw P passing through said registering slots. This screw is adjustable up or down, so as to regulate the throw of the feed-arm in order to suit different-spaced teeth. It will thus be seen that the feed-arm is adjustable vertically upon the guide-box H, while the latter is also adjustable laterally by means of the adj usting-screw N and held in its laterally-adjusted position by means of the thmnb'screw M, thereby securing accuracy in close adjustment, which is sometimes required when the machine is in operation. The thumbescrew N is also held tightly in place by means of a vertical screw Q, passing into the standard 0 The lower end of the adjustable feed'arm is provided with an inward extension g, which latter is also provided with a downwardly-beveled flange g, said beveled flange being adapted to be engaged by the beveled or inclined cams of the wiper-wheel H when the same is revolved. As this flanged portion is thus engaged, it is obvious that the lower end 1 of the feed-arm is thrown outwardly, while the upper end is thrown inwardly, forcing the pusher linger or fingers against the teeth of the saw and moving the same forward such. a distance as to permit of the file operating the proper teeth. A spring R, secured to the bed-plate, serves to return the feed-arm to its normal position after having moved the saw, as above described. It will be seen that these inclined or beveled cams h of the wiper-wheel are so arranged that they will strike the flanged portion of the feed-arm and actuate the same, so as to provide for the pusher-finger engaging the teeth of the saw at the moment the jaws of the vise, hereinafter described. are opened.
The letters S S represent, respectively, the upper and lower jaws of the vise, said vise extending through the upper enlarged por-v tion of the irregular slot a of the bed-plate. The jaw S is provided on its front with an upwardly-extending flange s, which is secured to the bed-plate by means of suitable screws or equivalents, and is further provided with a rearwardly-extendingbifurcated portion 3 in which bifurcated portion is hinged the lower jaw. 1
The letter T represents an adj ustable back guide for the saw, said guide consisting of a transverse piece provided with forwardlyprojecting fingers or bolts, which pass through the rear flange of the upper jaw, the ends of said bolts bearing against the back of the saw. This guide is made adjustable by means of a screw U, which passes through an upward extension 3, from the bifurcated portion of the rearward extension of the jaw, the end thereof bearing against the transverse piece of the guide, It will be seen that by simply turning this screw either to the right or left the band-saw V, which is passed between the two jaws, may be moved either forwardor rearward, as desired. The saw, as previously stated, is also passed through the downwardly-extending slits bl) of the bearings B, secured to the bed-plate, and is kept in engagement with the saw by means of the guide-rollers E E, which also facilitate the movement of the saw, as previously stated. The saw is also looped over little rolls W, as shown in the drawings, so as to afford a firm support for the same throughout its entire circumference.
In order to facilitate the release of the jaws and to effect a speedy action of the same, I have shown disposed between said ja\ s a spring X, the resiliency of which effectually accomplishes this result.
Pivoted in suitable bearings Y Y in the bottom of the bed-plate is a saddle Z, which extends through the slot of said bed-plate in front of the lower jaw of the vise, and its lower end is adapted to bear against the periphery of the wiper or cam wheel I-I, while its upper end comes in contact with the bolt A depending from the end of the lower jaw of the vise. By this means the opening and closing of the jaws is accomplished, for the moment the end of said saddle ascends one of the projections or inclines upon the camwheel the saddle is forced against the bolt A which latter has the effect of forcing the lower movable jaw firmly against one side of the saw. this incline or projection the jaw falls and releases the saw, and this movement is continued, alternately opening and closing the jaws von the revolution of the wheels, the projections o'r inclines being so arranged thereon as to cause the automatic closing of the j a'ws when the file is passing between the teeth and the opening of the same, so that the saw may be moved forward one tooth after the file has traveled in one direction a distance equal to its length.
The letters 13 3 represent the set-jaws, said jaws being pivoted, respectively, to one side of each of the jaws of the vise upon their forward ends and then passed through the slot of the bed-plate. The rear ends of these sets are connected by a link 6'', and the upper one is extended and provided with an aperture b which receives one of the bent ends of a rod D A yoke E is arranged upon the rear of the bed-plate and is provided with upwardly and downwardly extending arms, respectively, 6 e, the latter extension being widened at its lower end and provided with an elongated slot e, through which a screw F passes, and to one side and above said slot it is provided with an elongated recess 0. passes a screw G, and its extreme end is provided with a rearward llange e, which is adapted to receive the other bent end of the red I). By this means connection is made between the upper jaw of the set. and the yoke E".
Secured to each side of the curved portion of the yoke are brackets H 11, the inner surface of the upper extension of bracket ll being recessed, as at It, so as to permit of the upper extension of the yoke fitting therein, and also provided with an elongated slot 71?, into which passes a screw 1. The rear or outer port-ion of this bracket is also provided with a downward extension 713, against which the laterally-adjustable cam I is adapted to hear when it is desired that the set mechanism should operate. The downward extension of the bracket 11 is also provided with a recessed forward surface 7L, one side of said recess adapted to fit against the side of the lower lateral extension of the yoke, while the other side thereof fits within the elongated recess c" of the said lower lateral extension. The latter is also provided with an elongated slot 71 similar to the slot in bracket I1 and through which a screw J passes, and the rearwardly-extending portion of the bracket II" is likewise provided with an upwardly-extending flange 71. against which the laterally-adjustable cam I alternately bears when the set mechanism is in operation. The end of a screw K passes through an aperture h in the rearward extension of the bracket II, said screw being provided with a milled head which fits into a recess 6 in the curved portion of the yoke E. A screw If is also adapted to pass through an aperture h in the rearward extension of the bracket II", and bears with its end against the side of the milled head of screw K". It will thus be seen that by providing the set-jaws in connection with the construction above described, an arrangement is provided, when the cam I is adjusted so as to come in contact with the downwardly and upwardly extending fianges or extensions 71 h, whereby the brackets will be alternately actuated and a vertically-reciprocatin g motion imparted to the yoke, which in turn actuates the set-jaws, and said motion may be increased or diminished, and consequently the set of the teeth also regulated by the employment of the screws passing within the elongated slots of said yoke. It will also benotieed that the angularbrackets are also inrle iiendently adjustable upon the upward and downward extensions of the yoke by means of the screws K and L as byturning the same the upward and downward flanges or extensions of said brackets maybe made to approach or recedc from the engaging end of the laterally-adjustable cam I, thereby increasing or diminishing the force exerted thereupon by said cam, the screws passing through the elongated slots of said brackets at the same time holding the same in close contact with the yoke.
I have shown the widened end of the latererall y-extendin g arm 0 provided upon its f orward or inner surface with a recess 0*, which registers with a si milar recess a upon the rear side of the bed-plate. In this recess is disposed a spring M, which serves to return the yoke to its normal position after having been actuated through the means previously described.
Figs. 21 and illustrate a modification in the arrangement of the files, and consists of a rectangularlyshaped piece provided with latcrally-exten din g reduced and rounded portions, which may be suitably journaled in the frame of the file-carriage. It is also provided with an enlongated slot, in which is removably secured the file, said file having each end beveled, so as to form the file points or angles.
While I prefer to use in connection with my device the two files previously described, still it may in some instances be found advantageous to use but a single file of the construction just described.
Having thus described the general construction of my improved filing and setting machine, the operation of the same is as follows: \Vhen it is desired that the setting mechanism should not operate, the laterally-adjustable cam I is moved upon themain shaft G, so as to bear against the face of the wiperwheel. In the first place, if the file-carriage is in its lowermost position and the drivewheel is revolved in the direction of the arrow, said file-carriage will be moved toward the upper end of the machine, while the angle of one of the files will pass between one set of teeth of the saw. \Vhen the file-carriage has traveled far enough for the screw C to ascend the inclined portion of the track or way, the file will be lifted out of engagement with the teeth of the saw, and as the carriage continues to travel in the same direction until the downwardly-bent end of the shaft A comes in contact with the outer lug or ear 0*, said shaft will be moved forward and the pawl or dog Z made to traverse the worm w upon shaft \V, and thereby partially revolve the file-carriage, so as to bring the next file in position for engagement with the saw. Upon the continuationv of the turning of the drivewheel the arm or shaft M and the tile-carriage are made to travel in the opposite direction, when exactly the same operation is repeated. It will also be noticed that the moment the file has traversed the teeth on either its up ward or downward movement and has been raised from engagement therewith by ascending one of the inclines, the end of the pivoted saddle also passes over the raised portion of the periphery of the cam or wiper wheel and permits the lower jaw of the vise to fall, and also at the same time the end of said saddle descends from the raised portion the cam upon the outer face of the wiper-wheel engages the beveled forward end of the feedarm and throws the pusher finger or fingers IIO thereon into engagement with the teeth of the saw and moves the same laterally one tooth. If now it is desired that the operation of setting should also take place, the springpawl bearing against the grooved hub of the 1aterally-adjustable cam I is raised and said cam adjusted so that the end thereof will come alternately in contact with the downward and upward extensions h h, respectively, of the brackets H E. It will be seen that when the main shaft is revolvedthe laterally-ad j ustable cam is also revolved, by reason of the projecting finger thereof passing into the aperture in the wiper-wheel, and as said cam is revolved the end thereof in coming in contact with the upward extension 7L1? of the bracketH will move the bracket downward and likewise the yoke and bracket II also in the same direction,and thus bring the lower jaw of the set to bear against one of the teeth of the saw. On the continued turning of the shaft the end of the adjustable cam I will next come in contact with the downward extension h of the upper bracket 1 1 when the mechanism actuating the set will be moved toward the upper part of the bedplate, and consequently the upper jaw of the set will be brought into action, thus providing for the alternate setting of the teeth to the right and left. It will also be noticed that this setting of the teeth is simultaneous with the filing that is to say, the teeth to one side of those being acted upon by the file are set while the former are filed. XV hen the carriage is movingdownward, the lower set-jaw operates, while when the carriage is moving upward the upper set-jaw operates.
From the foregoing it is obvious that my device can be used as a combined filer and setter or simply as a filing device, or, furthermore, may be employed simply to set the teeth of the saw, as the file-carriage may be readily thrown back upon its hinges out of engagement with the saw. v
My machine is designed to make sixty revolutions per minute, and files and sets two teeth on each revolution,thus filing one hundred andtwenty teeth per minute, and this speed may be increased to a limited degree and still the machine will do good work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In asaw-filing machine, the combination,
with a bed-plate provided with an elongated slot therein, an automatically-operating vise, a verticallyreciprocating file-carriage, revolving file-brackets journaled therein, carrying a plurality of files, and mechanism for semi-revolving said brackets, whereby the files are made to alternately engage the teeth of the saw, substantially as set forth.
2. In a saw-filing-machine,the combination, with a bed-plate having an elongated slot therein, of avise consisting of twoupper jaws, the upper jaw provided with a rearwardly-extending portion which terminates in an upwardly-extending slotted portion, and the lower jaw having its extended portion passing through the slot in the bedplate and pivoted within the slotted or bifurcated portion of the rearward extension of the upper jaw, a back guide consisting of a transverse strip provided with forwardly-extending arms which pass between the two jaws and bear against the back of the saw, an adj listing-screw passing through the lateral extension of the rear portion of the upper jaw, and a spring intermediate said jaws, substantially as set forth.
3. In a saw-filingmachine, the combination, with an automatically-operating vise consisting of pivoted jaws, of an automatically-operating feed-arm provided with an elongated slot therein, a longitudinally-slotted box upon which said feed-arm rests, an adj Listing-screw working in the registering slots of the feedarm and box,substantially as set forth.
4. In a saw-filin g machine, the combination, with an automatically-operating vise consisting of pivoted jaws, of an automatically-operating feed-arm provided with an elongated slot therein, and a longitudinally-slotted boX upon which said feed-arm rests, said box being provided with a lateral longitudinallyslotted extension and adjusting-screws, one of said screws working in the registering slots of the feed-arm and box, and the other working in the lateral longitudinally-slotted extension of said box, so as to give lateral adjustment to the latter, substantially as set fort-h.
5. In a saw-filin g machine, the co mbination,
with an automatically-operating vise consisting of pivoted jaws, of an automatically-operating feed-arm, a bed-plate provided with a series of lugs or ears and also provided with a standard or upright having a transverse aperture therein, a box disposed between the lugs or cars upon the bed-plate and upon which said feed-arm rests, said box being further provided with lateral extensions, one of said extensions being slotted longitudinally and the other provided with a transverse aperture registering with the aperture in the standard or upright extending from the bed-plate, an adj usting-screw working in the longitudinally-slotted extension of I the box, a transverse screw working in the registering apertures of the standard and opposite lateral extension of the box, and a vertical screw bearing upon said transverse screw, substantially as set forth.
6. In a saw-filing machine, the combination, with an automatically-operating vise, of an automatically-operating feed-arm, said arm having one of its ends provided with a laterally-extendin g plate, a spring-actuated pusher finger or bar secured thereto, a transverse pin intersecting said end of the feed-arm, and a spring-actuated pusher-finger secured to the end of said transverse pin, substantially asset forth.
7. In a saw-filing machine, the combination,
with a bed-plate provided with a central elongated slot and having upon opposite sides slitted bearings,of angular bracketssccu red to said bearings and provided with downwardlyextending screw-bolts, guide-rollers mounted thereon, an antomatically-operating vise secured within the longitudinal slot of the bedplatc, an auxiliary frame-work provided with suitable rolls, and a band-saw looped over said rolls and passing within the slits of the bed-plate bearings and thence between the jaws of the vise, substantially as set forth.
8. In a saw-filing machine, the combination, with a bed-plate provided with a central elongated slot, of a transverse shaft journaled in suitable bearings upon the rear side of said bed-plate and carrying on one end a drivewheel, a wiper-wheel secured to said shaft and provided on one side with inclined cans or projections, a pivoted and vertically-adjustable feed-arm provided on one end with a hinged springactuated pusher-finger and having its opposite end bent at right angle3 and terminating in an end bevel and adapted to be alternately engaged by the cams upon the wiper-wheel, a keeper through which this angular end of the feed-arm passes, a spring for returning the feed-arm to its normal position, and an automaticallyoperating vise, substantially as set forth.
9. In a saw-filing machine, the combination, with a bed-plate provided with a central elongated slot, of a transverse shaft journaled in suitable bearings upon the rear side of said bed-plate and carrying on one end a drivewhecl, a wiper-wheel secured to said shaft and provided on one side with inclined cams or projections and having its periphery provided with a series of projections orinclines, a pivoted ertically-adjustablc feed-arm provided on one end with a hinged springactuatcd pusher-linger and having its opposite end bent at right angles and terminating in an end bevel adapted to be alternately engaged by the cams upon the wiper-wheel, a keeper through which this augularend of the feed-arm passes, a spring for returning the feed-arm toits normal position, a vise extending through the slot of the bed-plate and consisting of pivoted jaws, the lower jaw being provided with a downwardly-extcnding bolt, and a saddle journaled in bearings in the slot of the bed-plate and provided with a re cess into which said bolt fits and having its beveled end bearing upon the periphery of the wiper-wheel, substantially as set forth.
10. In a saw-filing-machine, the combination, with a bed-plate provided with an clongated slot, of an automatically-opcratingpivoted feed-arm for giving lateral adjustment to the saw, a transverse shaft journalcd'in suitable bearings upon the rear side of said bed-plate and carrying on one end a drivewheel and on the opposite end a crank, the
latter provided with a suitable crank-wrist,
a horizontally-extending slot-ted yoke into which the crank-wrist works, said yoke having extending from one side a vertical arm working in an apertured guide extending from the bed-plate and provided on its opposite side with a vertically and in wardlyextending arm having a recessed end, a verticallyarranged shaft provided with a central flat portion and with rounded end, the latter passing through bearings upon the bed-plate, forwardly-extending brackets extending from said central flat portion, adjustable hearings secured to said brackets, a longitudinal bar journaled in said bearings, and a file-carriage hinged to said bar, substantially as set forth.

In a saw-filing machine, the combination, with a bed-plate, of a vcrtically-operating arm provided with a central flat portion and rounded ends, the latter workingin suitable bearings in said bed-plate, forwardlyextending brackets extending from said central llat portion, transverse screws passing across the upper ends of said brackets, bearings mounted upon said screws, one of said bearings being provided with an upper bifurcated end, a shaft mounted in said bearings, a screw passing into the upper bifurcated bearing for the purpose of retaining the shaft in position, and a file-carriage hinged to said shaft, substantially as set forth.
12. In a saw-filing machine, the combination, with a bed-plate provided with an elon' gated slot therein,of an antomatically-operatin g vise, a vertically and automatically operating arm provided with brackets extending therefrom, a shaft having its bearings in said brackets and provided with an adjustable notched collar, a file-carriage hinged to said shaft, and a coiled spring upon said shaft having its free ends bearing upon the carriage and havin its central coiled portion passing into the notch of the adjustable col lar, substantiallyas set forth.
13. In a saw-filing machine, the combination, with a bed-plate provided with an clongated slot therein, of an antomatically-operatingvisc, an automatically vertically operatin g arm provided with forwardly-extendin brackets, a shaft having its bearings in said brackets, a hinged spring-actuated file-carriage consisting of a longitudinal piece, transverse endpieces, and an auxiliary frame of square or rectangular shape, a shaft passing through the end pieces and through the auxiliary frame, the portion passing through the auxiliary f rame bcingprovidcd with a worm, file-brackets mounted upon said shaft, files secured therein, a shaft mounted loosely in the ends of the auxiliary frame having its rear end bent downward, adog mounted upon said shaft and adapted to engage the worm, a track or way secured to the bedplatc and provided with end inclines, and laterally-extending lugs or cars for engaging the bent end of the movable shaft, and an adjustable screw-bolt passing through one of the corners or angles of the auxiliary frame, the end thereof bearing upon the track or way, substantially as set forth.
14. In a saw filing and settingmachinc, the combination,with an automatically-operating vise consisting of pivoted jaws, of an automatically-operating vertically-adj ustableand laterally-adj ustable feed-arm, set-jaws pivotally secured to each of the jaws of the vise upon one side, said set jaws constructed to alternately engage the teeth of the saw and bend the same alternately to the right and left, substantially as set forth.
15. The COl'llblllfthlOll,Wlhl1 a bed-plate provided with an elongated slot, of an automaticall y operating vise consisting of pivoted jaws, a pivoted vertically-adjustable feed-arm, an automatically vertically moving file-carriage having the revolving file-brackets journaled therein,set-jaws pivotally secured to each of the jaws of the vise upon one side thereof, said set-jaws constructed to automatically and alternately engage the teeth of the saw and bend the same alternately to the right and left, substantially as set forth.

The combination,with a bed-plate provided with an elongated slot, an automatically operating vise consisting of pivoted jaws, a pivoted vertically-adjustable feedarm, a vertically-moving file-carriage having revolving file-brackets journaled therein, a shaft secured in suitable bearings upon the rear side of the bed-plate and provided on one end with a drive-wheel, and also having mounted centrally thereon a cam-wheel, a laterally-adjustable cam provided with a laterally-extending finger passing loosely into an aperture in the cam-wheel and provided with a grooved hub, a spring-pawl engaging said grooved hub, a vertically-moving yoke secured to the rear side of said bed-plate and provided with downwardly and upwardly extending flanges, set-jaws pivotally secured to each of the jaws of the vise upon one side, links connecting the rear ends of said jaws, and a rod connecting the upper jaw of the set with the vertically-moving yoke, whereby each jaw is made to alternately engage the teeth of the saw and bend the same alternately to the right and left, substantially as set forth.
17. In a saw-setting machine, the combination, with a bed-plate provided with an elongated slot, an automatieally-operating vise secured in said slot, a shaft secured in suitable bearings upon the rear side of the bedplate and provided on one end with a drive-wheel, and also having mounted centrally thereon a cainavlleel, a cam secured to said wheel, a vertically-moving yoke secured to the rear side of said bedplate and provided with downwardly and inwardly extending flanges, setjaws pivotally secured to each of the jaws of the vise upon one side, links connecting the rear ends of said jaws, and a rod for eonnecting the upper jaw of the set with the verticallymoving yoke, whereby each jaw is made to alternately engage the teeth of the saw and bend the same alternately to the right and left by reason of the end of the cam alternately engaging the opposite downwardly and upwardly extending flanges of the yokes, substantially as set forth.
18. In a saw-setting machine of the described class, the combination, with a laterally-adjustable cam provided with a grooved hub, of a spri n g-pawl engaging said hub, a vertically-moving yoke secured to the rear side of the bedplate of the machine and provided with vertical longitudinally -slotted extensions, adj usting-serews workin in the longitudinal slots of the extensions, and angular brackets having one portion seated upon said extensions of the yokes and provided with elongated slots and having the rearwardlyextending portions formed or provided, respectively, with downward and upward extensions, against which the end of the laterally-adjustable cam alternately bears, substantially as set forth.
19. In a saw-setting machine of the described class, the combination, with a later ally-adjustable cam provided with a grooved hub, of a springpawl engaging said grooved hub, a vertically-moving yoke secured to the rear side of the bed-plate of the machine and provided with vertical longitudinally-slotted extensions, ad justing-screws working in said slots, angular brackets having one portion seated upon the extensions of said yokes and provided with elongated slots and having rearwardly-extending portions formed or provided, respectively, with downward and upward extensions, against which the end of the laterally-adj ustable cam alternately bears, set-screws working in the slots in said brackets, a screw provided with a milled head having its end passing through an aperture in the rearward extension of the upper angular bracket, and a screw passing through the rear ward extension of the lower angular bracket, its end bearing against the milled head of the opposite screw, substantially as set forth.
20. In a saw-setting nachine 0f the described class, the combination, with a laterally-adjustable cam provided with a grooved hub, of a spring-pawl engaging said hub, avertically-moving yoke secured to the rear side of the bedplate of the machine and provided with vertical longitudinally-slotted extensions, the lower one of said extensions being widened and provided on its front side with a recess registering with a similar recess in the rear of the bed-plate, ad j Listing-screws working in the longitudinal slots of the extensions of the yokes, a spring disposed within the registering recesses of the lower widened extension and the bed-plate, angular brackets having one portion seated upon said extensions of the yokes and provided with elongated slots and having their rearwardly-extending portions formed or provided, respectively, with downward and upward extensions,
against which the end of the hiteraily-adjushable cam alternately bears, and set-screws 5 working in the slots of said brackets, substantially as set forth.
