FOALING-KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
Application filed July 7, 1916. Serial No. 107,937.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH PATRICK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Randall, in the county of Jewell and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foaling Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to foaling knives and it has for its object the provision of an improved device of this character constructin such manner as to adapt it to cut up a foal while the latter is within the body of the mother.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a foaling knife constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the blade of the knife.
Like numerals designate corresponding partsin both the figures of the drawing.
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the instrument comprises a two part shank the parts thereof being designated by the numerals 5 and 6. These two parts of the shank are connected, when the instrument is to be used, by screwing a reduced portion 7 of the part 6 into an internally threaded portion 8 of the part 5. The part 6 .of the shank carries a handle 9 and the threads 7 are so disposed that when the part 6 has been screwed into the part 5 as far as possible the handle 9 will lie in the plane of the blade 10 to thereby indicate to the veterinarian the position of the blade to enable him to guide the latter to best advantage.
The blade is a comparatively heavy one and has a convex outer face 11 which is slightly rounded, see Fig. 2, and a concave inner cutting edge 12. This cutting edge extends from about the point 13 to point 14. It is to be noted that a slightswell 15 is formed in the cutting edge. It will also be noted that the rounded outer edge 11 is carried around at a point inside of the axial line of movement of the outer part of the point of the blade, this line of movement being indicated by the dotted line a. The purpose of this is to prevent the point of the blade from catching in the flesh of, or injuring the mother.
By reason of the provision of the swell 15 the parts being out are held away from the shank 5 to thereby permit greater freedom of movement in the handling of the knife and the guiding of the same. The rounded convex face 11 of the instrumentpermits its insertion into themother without injury to.
the latter. The instrument, as a Whole, is a strong and rigid one and enables the operator to dismember a foal without .diificulty. With a strong and rigid knife of considerable size'such as is herein illustrated a foal can usually be disjoined but if it becomes necessary to cut a bone this can readily be done because owing to the peculiar concavo-convex fit of the knifeit is possible to readily engage the bone and, at the same time, there is no likelihood of the bone slipping out of engagement with the knife after it has once been engaged by the latter.
Having described my invention what I claim is 1. A foaling knife of the character described comprising a shank terminating in a substantially semi-circular blade, the inner face thereof being sharpened to provide a cutting edge, said cutting edge comprising an outwardly bowed swell adjacent the juncture of the cutting edge and the shank.
2. A foaling knife of the character described comprising a shank terminating in a substantially semi-circular blade, the inner face thereof being sharpened to provide a cutting edge, said cutting edge comprising an outwardly bowed swell adjacent the juncture of the'cuttingedge and the shank and the outer face of the knife being continued at its outer end toward the shank.
3. A foaling knife of the character described comprising a substantially semi-cir- A R. KINGSLEY, L. L. BURCHINAL.
