IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE CASES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,085, dated October 17, 1871.

Be it known that I, OTTO NAUEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sewing-Machine Gase; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom! panying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of my case when locked, the line x, Fig. 3, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a similar section of my case when the same is open. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the plane y y, Fig. l.

This invention relatesto a sewing-machine case which is composed of two parts united by a hingejoint, one part being connected to the table by two parallel links in such a manner that when the case is unlocked and opened it can be bodily swung back on said parallel links, thereby giving free access to the sewing-machine 5 while the connection between the case and the table is durable, cheap, easily operated, and not liable to get out of order. One of the parallel links forms a catch to engage with the latch or bolt of a lock attached to the front part of the case in such a manner that when the case is locked the parallel links are prevented from swinging back and the sewing-machine is eft'ectually protected.

In the drawing, A designates the table of a sewing-machine, the machine itself being not y represented in the drawing. On this table is secured the case B, which is composed of two sections, G D, connected together at the top by hinge-j oints, so that the same can be turned down to the position shown in Fig. l, or up to the position shown in Fig. 3. The front section D of the case is disconnected from the table A, but the rear section C is attached to the same by two parallel links b c, which swing on pivots cl e, secured in brackets E that are fastened to the ta ble, while the outer or upper ends of said links connect with the section C of the case by means of pivots j' g. By this arrangement I am enabled to swing the rear section of the case forward to the position shown in Fig. 2, while, at the same time, a firm connection between the table and the case is obtained which can easily be operated and is not liable to get out of order.

When the case is opened and swung back to the position shown in Fig. 2, the sewing-machine (supposed to be fastened on the table) is fully exposed and easy access can be had to all parts thereof.

To the front section D of my case is secured a lock, F, which may be made to lock under any fixed portion of the machine, or under a suitable plate attached to the table; but I arrange said lock by preference in such a position that its latch 7L can engage with a hook or other catch, z', attached to the link c. By this arrangement ot' the lock I am enabled to lock both parts of the case securely, since, if the latch h engages with the hook or catch t', as shown in Fig. 1, the rear section of the case is prevented from swinging back; and, furthermore, the locking mechanism is rendered independent of the table or of the machine, and it can readily be applied to machines of any desired construction.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
