To all 'whom z't may concern Y `Be it known that I, Laon Timur, e eer, a subject of the King of Belgium, an resident of Huy, in the Kingdom of Belgium,"
have invented certain new and useful 'Imrovements.. 'in Beating-Engines to Rene aper-Stock; and I- do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or guresof reference marked therein, which lform a part of this specication.
-This invention relates to beating engines for rening paper stock.
One object of the invention is to provide simple and etlcient means for felting the bers.
Another object of the invention is to provide rollers for felting the bers which are adjustable independently and having means for obtaining the pressure which is most convenient to the various bers.
The principal `qualities of a good paper are transparency and 'solidity which qualities are obtained. by perfect felting of the bers and said felting depends upon the renement of the stock. To accomplish this result, the bers must be cut to obtain'a perfect transparency and they must be divided in convenient lengths to provide for as close a felting as possible.
With these and other objects in view, 'the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as-will be more fully described and claimed.
In the vaccompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of abeating engine constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a section on an enlarged scale taken on the line o-d of Fig. 1, the trough being also partially represented in section.
In the embodiment illustrated, a beating engine is shown having two rollers A and B one of which is provided with metallic knives and the other is constructed of basalt same material and crushes the bers without specification or Letter; Patent.

I cutting them:` These facts which were experienced by me, led'to the designing of a beating engine with tworollers one of which .I provide with steel knives and the other of which yis made of Abasalt lava stone. The
successful result of the combination of said rollers depends mostly upon the accurateness-with which thev action of each element.-
or roller is regulated or in other words, upon 'the specic pressure worked out by Aeach roller. To accomplish this, a special device for equilibrating the rolls by means of rolling counterweights was used whichl renders it very easy to produce by each roller the upon a lever 1 which is fulcrumed or articulated at 2 and its free end rests at'3 upon a A small supporter 4 which is itself fulcrumed A pressure which has been found to be the at 5 upon a crank .6. The cranks 6 are keyed l on teach end of a shaft 7- which passes through the-entire trough .of the beater through Aa special housing prepared for'this purpose.
'Io one of the cranks 6 is connected a rod 8 in order to control the distance between the roller and the bed plate. The lower end of the rod 8 slides freely in an. aperture in a small console I9 of the supporter so that the cranks can pivot around the point 7 until their movement downward is limited by a portion 18 of large radius created at the bottom of the rod. The other end of this rod is threaded and is supported by .a wheel 9 which is provided with a threaded hole and is itself supported by the frame f7. The wheel 9 is operated by a snake or endless screw 10 to which a hand wheel 11 imparts movement.
To balance the roll, a counterweight 12 is employed which'is tted with roller bearings 20 and rolls upon a' graduated lever 13. This lever 13 rests upon a knife edge 14 such as is commonly used in weighing machines and a rod 15 connects said lever adjacent said point 14 with the crank shaft 6. The length of this rod may be regulated accordin to the will of the operator being provided with a turn buckle or adjusting device 16 for this purpose. The longer end of the lever 13 which extends beyond its fuland the roller provided withmetal must be almost completely equilibrated` in [shafts has been reduced by preparing bearings at the interior portion of the beater trough where they are driven by pulleys or belts. i l
A special study of the beateritrough was made iny order to facilitate the run of thev 4 stock to increase the circulation and to render shoveling unnecessary although stock deposit is avoided. To accomplish this result; I have made the saddle much higher than usual. and a channel which follows the saddle much narrower.
From-the above it will be obvious that in the top beating engines described it is veryv important to provide means for regulating independently the pressure under lwhich eachof the rollers is working and each of.
the rollers must beymore or less equilibrated so that the weight 12 counter-balances toa greater or less extent, the weight of the roller, accordingto the kind of paper which is tobe obtained. When a'paper requiring a very greasy paste orpulp is desired, the lava stone roller mustpress with its entire weight in order to refine the fibers asy .ves
order to cut the fibers very little land to permit-them tofremain 'of lconsiderable length.
4On the other hand should a paper requiring a short and medium paste be desired, the lava stone roller must be almost completely -equilibrated in order that` the paste be slightlygreasy andthe vroller provided with the metalknives must be considerably weighted pressure of both rollers must be properly inorder to cut and shorten the fibers. The
adjusted or regulated for all kinds of inter mediary stocks, of paper and the gist of this invention resides in providing a beatingengine with two rollers each of -which may be independently adjusted.
I claim as my invention: f. In va beating engine'the 'combination of o a supporting structure, a plurality of rollers mounted in said structure, levers fulcrumed at one end to support the journals of the rollers, ulcrumed members supporting the free ends of said levers,` cranks carrying said ulcrumed members, and counterbalancing means connected with said fulcrumed members for varying the position of the suspending means of said rollers, 'whereby the pressure of the rollers on the paste is controlled,.the counterbalancing means of one roller being entirely independent of that of the other roller. v
In testimon 4whereof I aix my signature in presence o two witnesses.
