P. 'WALTERS, 0F CAMAS, WASHINGTON.
nos `.11...oie;aa`arii\is ivincHANisM-roa cALENDRING-Maciiiivas-- To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE P. WALTEns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Camas, Clarke county, State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Doctor-Operating Mechanism for Calendering-Machines, of'which the following is a specification. l This invention relates to mechanism for operating the doctors used in v calendering machines. y
One of the main objects of this invention is to provide suitable power-operated means,- y adapted to simple and flexible control, for
throwing the doctors'into orout of operative position relative to the calender rolls.
Another ,object is to provide means for regulating the pressure with which said doctors bear on the. calender rolls when said doctors are in their operative position.
I attain these objects of my invention by connecting the doctors to a single member, to which is imparted longitudinal movement by any means, for example by connecting such member to a piston head reciprocable in a cylinder connected to a source of fluid or liquid under pressure, and controlling the position of the piston in the cylinder by ad niitting the operating {iuid or liquid into 0r discharging same from'the cylinder.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section of a calendering machine showing my doctor-operating mechanism as used in connection. therewith, the
- doctors being -in operative contact with the rolls; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of one of the pneumatic means used for positioning the doctors as desired;` Fig. 3 is a vertical sec-` tion on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a fragmental view showing a diierent optional arrangement of my invention: ,and
Fig. 5 is a fragmental view showing still an- `other form in which my. invention may be arranged.
L represents one rof the side frame mem-- bers of a calendering machine, and o are the rolls. rIheI paperl c traverses the fina-.I chine in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. rI he movable doctors CZ and the fixed doctor e are arranged on opposite 'sides of the consecutive rolls. The doctors d are pivotally mounted on blocks j", adapted for vertical adjustment in the vertical guideways g which are fixed. on the frame mem- -jbers a. The doctor e is rigidly mounted on a movable block iii the corresponding Specicaton of Letters Patent.

\ Application filed December 17, 1915. Serial No.6'7,472.
are the pneumatic cylinders j, in which are reciprocable pistons n. See Fig. 2. Vertical members 7c are slidably supported in vertical guidew-ays Z, and the upper ends of these-members are connected to the piston rods m of said-piston heads a. Powerful compression coil springs o, underlying the piston heads normally hold the pistons n and therewith the members 7c in their up position. the lower end of each cylinder j, and a fluid admission conduit g connects the upper end of each. cylinder with a source of fiuid under pressure, such as air, steam, or water, and a two-way valve r, located in the line of such conduit g, as shown in Fig. 1, provides convenient means for controllingthe pressure imposed on the pistons. Slots s in the longitudinally movable members 7c have pins t which connect the sides of the yoked fulcrumed arms u of the doctors d. Balance tension springs o connect the ins t with the members 7c at the opposite en s of the slots haust into the atmosphere. The doctors will Check-valves 79 are provided in then be in inoperative position, thatis, away.
from the rolls lVhen said 'doctors are to be placed into operative position against the rolls, the valve ris' operated so as to admit fluid into the cylinders j. The members 7c will then be moved downward and the'lever action exerted will thus throw the doctors into operativeA position against the calen;A der rolls. By' the operation of the valve fr, the pressure exerted on the piston heads is regulated at will. Itis apparent'that -the cylinders j may be openbottomed,`if so desired.
In ,'Fig. 4 the construction shows but one vcylinder fw instead of two, as in Fig. 2. Said cylinder w is horizontal, and is provided with a piston m having opposed piston rods y, slidable in horizontal guideways 2 of the frame. Bell-cranks 4 are pivoted on fixed 110 cai and therother end being connected to the adjacent .piston rod y. A conduit 6, carrying the fluid under pressure, is divided into the t\vo`b1anches 7, 8 which aretconnected to opposite ends of the'cylinder fw. Twoway valves 9 are located in each of the two branches, and said valves are provided with operating levers 10, connected by a link 11, which causes them to move in synchronism. andv in opposite directions. A sprocket'flf2,
\ fixed on the spindle of one of the valves 9,.
carries a drive connection 13 which runs over a hand wheel 14, located at a convfiient point in 'reach of the operator. this arrangement of valve control, when fluid is admitted in one side of the cylinder, it will be exhausted from the other side, and
the pistonvwrill move accordingly. l/Vhen the piston movesy to the right the members k "will belowered andthe doctors thus thrown into operative position, and vice versa.
In Fig, the upper ends ci the members c are provided with armatures and collars 16. "Expansion springs 17 Munderlying the collars -1 (i,--nermally hold'the longitudinally movable members 7c in elevated position nS'olenoidsvl' nare circuit with the conductors 19.
20 is a control switch and 21 is a rheostat. NVheTthe-sWitehQOsClOSeithe armatures will be attracted downward so as to lowerl y the members c and thus place the doctors in scribed, including rollsand doctorsv adapted forl bearing upon the circumference fthe rolls, the combination of a longitudinally movable member, means' connecting the' doctors to said member, and adapted to efv movable member, and means for controlling `the application of power.
operative position, and the operation ofthe /rheostat 21 will regulate the force of attractive pull f'theA solenoids.
The expression power operated meansl for causing the-doctors-tobear onthe rolls with desired force, is used to designate the 1. nfs ritenne 5f he @bert r de fect the bearing of the doctors on the rolls, a source of power, means actuated thereby which are connected'with and are adapted to effect the movement of the longitudinally cmmections between the a 2. In a machine of the character described, i'ncluding rolls and doctors adapted ior bearing upon the circumference of the rolls, the lcombinationof a longitudinally' movable member, means yieldingly connecting the doctors to said member, and adapted to eect the bearing of the doctors on the rolls, a source of power, means actuated thereby which are connected With and Vareadapte'd to effect the movement of the longitudinally movable member, and means for controlling the application of powen` 3. In aiwcalendelinghmachine including a bear upon thai-latter, the lcombination of fulcrumed arms supporting said doctors, a
longitudinally movablemembeig connec^ movable member and said arms, a fluid operated cylinder-and-piston element, the piston of which is connected tothe longitudinally movable'member, and..means for controlling the' `lmfessure of the operating Quidrinzsaid cylinder. 1 I mnlmahcalendering machine including a .plurality rifulollsl and dofetors adapted to -hmnnmmmthelattei combination of j fulcrumed arms supportingV -said doctors, a
imlongitudinally;-movable :member provided with .longitudinal slots, pins .extending "through the slots of said member and con- ;'efet i`n ,f ij the fulcrumed arms of the doctors with the latter, balance springs adapted to hold' the pins in normal-position in the slots of said member, la Huid operated cylinderand-piston element the piston of which is connected to the longitudinally movable member, and means for controlling the pressure of the operating fluid in said cylinder.
