Description

ALEXANDER TAI T.
Improvement in Sad Iron Handles.
N0. 120,011 Patented 0ctl17,137
*illt-EQSGS v V Inventor I I UNTTE STATS ALEXANDER TAIT, OF SONORA, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRON HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,011, dated October 17, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER TAIT, of Sonora, in the county of Tuolumne, State of California, have invented an'Improvement in Sad Iron Handles; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvem ents without further invention or experi ment.
My invent-ion relates to improvements in detachable handles for sad-irons; and it consists of a simple and convenient arrangement whereby the handle can readilybe removed from the iron when it is being exposed to the fire to be heated, and again be replaced with equal facility when it is required for use.
In order to explain my invention so that others will be able to understand the same, reference is had to the accompanying drawing formin g a part of this specification, in which A represents a metal standard, which may, if desired, be made of wrought iron, and afterward cast in the sad-iron at the proper position near the front or narrow end, as shown. Secm ed to the upper end of this standard, and at right angles to it, is a rod, b, which extends back toward the rear of the iron in the same position that the handles of an ordinary sad-iron occupies. At the end of the rod b next to the standard is an enlargement or short screw, 0, which maybe either formed upon or firmly fixed to the rod, or it may be formed upon or fixed to the upper end of the standard. The handle D may be made of wood or of any other non conducting substance or material, and is made of the proper form to fit the grasping hand. In the end of and passing through the handle is a longitudinal socket, 0, deep enough to admit the rod 1). A ferrule, f, passes over the end of the handle, the interior of which is tapped with a screw-thread to fit the screw 0, so that by simply inserting the rod in the socket and giving the handle a few turns so as to screw the ferrule upon the screw 0, the attachment is firmly and effectively made.
The rod b serves to strengthen the attachment, but in some cases may be dispensed with, especially if the screw 0 is very long. No rear standard is employed.
By this means I provide a simple and convenient iron handle, which can be readily removed and replaced without trouble.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The single standard Aprovided with the screw 0, either with or without the rod 1), in combination with thehandle D and ferrule f, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness that the above-described invention is claimed by me I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
ALEXANDER TAIT. [L. s.]
