Appli-cation filed April 13, 1914i Serial No. 831,438.
7 1o all whom t may concern Be it known that I, NrnLs C. NinLsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Service- Box Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhe invention relates to covers for service boxes and seeks to provide a simple and f effective form of cover which may be se cured to the box without the aid of bolts or separable parts.
Service boxes are employed as a means of communication with the stop cock which is usually under ground near the street curb, for the purpose of cutting off and turning on the supply of water or gas served to the consumer.
Service box covers are used to close the upper end of the box which is near or at the surface of the ground, and the cover must be removed to shut off or turn on the supply of water or gas; also the cover must be replaced after each manipulation of the It is usual to secure the cover p become tight from rust or corrosion and often break on an attempt at removal. The removal often requires drilling and considerable time besides the expense of renewal.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved service box cover which may be readily secured to or removed from the service box by the aid of a special wrench provided for the purpose.
By constructing the cover for manipulation only by a special wrench, the removal of the coverby those not having the authority is prevented.
A further object of the invention is to provide means on the upper end of the box, and companion means on the cover to prevent water from entering the box.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more fully pointed out in the claims appended.
Figure l is a view in elevation of a service box to which the improved cover is applied. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section stop cock.
of the box and cover taken on line a@ of liig. 5. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the service box and of the cover. Fig. 4 is a plan viewl of the service box with the cover removed. Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the improved cover. Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of the cover.
Above the stop cock l and centrally located therewith is the lower section 2 of the service box, which is provided with Harige 3 to serve as a rest and with external thread 4, the latter being cast integral with the section, it being considered too expensive to machine threads on a service box.
The upper section 5 of the service box has internal thread 6 from end to end which is cast integral with the section, and serves to lengthen and shorten the box and as a means of securing the cover 7. It is obvious that thread 6 ymay be only in both ends of the section 5 vand may not necessarily run from end to end. The upper end of section 5 is provided with radial flange 8 and annular flange 9.
Cover- 7 is provided with external thread 11 cast integral therewith and fitting the internal thread G of section 5, and secured thereto by the locking of. thread 11 in thread l6. Cover 7 is provided with radial flange 12 extending outwardly, from which annular flange 13 extends downward so that when the cover is screwed in place as in Figs. 1 and 2, flange 12 of the cover rests on flange 9 of section 5, while flange 13 of the cover rests on fiange 8 of section 5. It will be understood from the foregoing that no water can run under the cover 7 and into section 5.
Cover 7 is provided with hole 14 having 5 flat sides to which a special wrench is fitted to secure it to section 5 or remove it therefrom so that the cover cannot be removed by an ordinary wrench or flat bar, it being desired to prevent opening of the cover except by those having authority as water and gas is not usually turned on or off by the consumer.
The cover 7 and upper section 5 are ready for use when they leave the foundry and require no bolts or separable parts to secure them together. It is the work of but a moment to close or open the box with a special wrench and reasonable security is afforded thereby against those not in authority manipulating the cover or the cock 1'; while the service box covers now in use are expensive both to manipulate and to.
sleeve being cylindrically smooth, a cover,
threads on said cover and adapted to screw in said threads 1n said sleeve, and an annular flange on said cover adapted to lit over the end of said sleeve when said cover is screwed on said sleeve.
2. In service stop boxes the combination of, a tube, an annular fiange integral with said tube, adapted to fit over a stop cock of a water pipe, a sleeve, fitting over and around said tube, the outer surface of said sleeve being oylindrically smooth, a cover closingthe end of said sleeve, and a single means by which the distance of said cover from said tube may be adjusted and said cover secured to said sleeve.
ln testimony whereof l affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
