Description
l No. 119,977.
` BENIAMIN FITZHUGH. y
Improvement in Portable Furnaces.
Patented 0ct.17,1871.
UNITED STATEs BENJAMIN Gr. FITZHUGH, OF FREDERICK, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,977, dated October 17, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN G. FITZHUGH, of the city and county of Frederick in the State of y Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement, being a Portable Cooking, Pre serving, and SadIronHeating Furnace, of which the following is a speeication:
My invention relates to portable furnaces for heating sad-irons, preserving, and cooking, and the said invention consists of an oblong rectangular box, having open sides on opposite sides of a pendent central grate, which side openings may be either closed by fitting therein toasting shields or slotted sides to admit of the outward projection of the handles of sad-irons, orentirely closed by side plates when the furnace is to be used for preserving or cooking, ivhile the top plate and its due-pipe are made changeable to receive a preserving-kettle or cooking utensils, thereby adapting a portable furnace with these advantages and uses at a comparatively small oost and in a very convenient manner.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical cross-section of the furnace adapted for preserving. Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a vertical cross-section of the furnace adapted for toasting or broilin g and heating sadirons, and Fig. 4 represents a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
rEhe box is oblong rectangular, having a central ash-pan, A, in the bottom plate B, extending the length of the box, and a top plate, O, With two downward-projecting sides, D, so as to form a central opening, E, within and beneath Which the grate F is placed, being suspended' upon ledges a of the sides D, as shown in Figs. l and 3, so that it may be removed when desired. This grate also extends the full length of the box, and the bottom plate forms a support, Gr, on each side of the grate for sad-irons, as shown in Figs.
l 3 and 4. The sides of the box are open, in order to admit toasting and broiling-shields H to be fitted therein, or covers I adapted to straddle the handles of sad-irons. These toasting and broiling-shields H are constructed with spits Z1 and rim c, one of Which forms a trough, d, for the drippings.
As this device is fully described in a patent granted to me and bearing even date herewith, further mention of it need not be made.
It can be fitted Within and supported so as to present the bread or .other article to the side of the grate-fire, as shown in Fig. 3. When adapted for preserving, the opening in the top is covered with a plate, J, provided with an annular rim, c, having an oval liuc-mouth, f, and the side openings are closed by sides K to retain the heat. W'hen adapted for cooking, the cover J is removed and one having a central pipe, L, and openings M, for culinary utensils put in its place, as shown in Fig. 4. The removable sides have rims, so as to be readily fitted and supported Within the open One of the advantages of this sides of the box. box-furnace is that both sides of a long, narrow grate are utilized for either heating or cooking purposes, While at the same time the ascending heat may be used for cooking or preserving 5 and as coke may be used as fuel entirely the furnace can be placed in or out of the house, as may be desired. The ash-pan A is provided with suitable end openings g for the admission of air'to supply combustion and to create a draught. The ashes may be easily removed from the ash-pan A through the side openings by means of a scraper. The toastingshields and removable sides are provided with handles, by which they may be removed and replaced in the furnace when desired. The top plate C, with its sides D, is cast in one piece, and the end and ash-pan plates are cast separately and united together in any suitable manner. The furnace is supported upon suitable legs', and it is my design to have the grate terminate above the bottom plate B.
It is obvious that the furnace may be of any desired length, and that the toasting and broiling shields may be fitted Within the furnace in separate and distinct sections.
Having described my invention, I claim-.
l. A portable furnace having a pendent central grate F, open sides and central openings in its top, and the side openings thereof closed by toasting or broiling-shields H or other detachable covers, I, adapted to receive sad-irons, and the central top opening closed by detachable covers adapted for preserving or cooking, as described I h N 2. The combination, with a central suspended grate F, of a removable side-toasting or broiling device, H b, arranged substantially as described.
3. In a portable furnace, the combination of the centra11y-suspended grate F with the sadiron supports G and the slotted covers I, arranged as shown and described.
4. In a portable furnace, the removable top J With its annular rim e and smoke-flue f, adapted to receive a preserving-kettle, as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand to the above specification of my portable cooking` and preserving furnace in the presence of two Witnesses this 11th day of September, A. D. 1871.
