G. F. ERICSON & W. H. TRUITT. PHOTOGRAPHIC BACKGROUND CARRIER.
' APPLICATION FILED OCT. I5. |9\5- Patented 0993,1916.

GUNNAR F. ERICSON AND WILLIAM H. TRUITT, 0F JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
PHOTOGRAPHIC-BACKGROUN D CARRIER. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1916.
Application filed October 15, 1915. Serial N 0. 55,972.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GUNNAR F. ERIC- SON and l/VILLIAM H. Tnurrr, citizens of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Background Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in photographic background carriers and our objects are the production of a portable structure which may be easily folded for transportation, and on which a plurality of backgrounds may be hung in such manner that they may be raised, lowered and turned at any desired angle and combined to form corners, panoramic group backgrounds and the like.
Figure 1 is a view of the carrier, Fig. 2
a detail view of the sliding swivel block and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 diagrammatic views showing different arrangements of back grounds.
The carrier comprises an upright preferably composed of the telescoping sections 1 and 2. A plate 3 is carried by the upper part and the foot 4 on the lower part has feet'5 and 7 pivoted thereto with the braces 6 and 8 pivotally secured to the feet 5 and 7 at one end and to the slide block 9 at the other, a clamp screw 10 serving to lock the slide block 9 in position. The feet 5 and 7 are preferably at right angles to one another so the carrier may be used in a corner.
The top plate 3 has a plurality of rods 11, 12 and 13 pivoted to the rear part and supported by the plate 3, which may have stops 1 1, 14, to prevent their passing off the supporting surface of the plate thus permitting the rods to be swung in a plane at right angles to the upright.
Each rod has a slide block 15 which is movable along the rod. Pivoted to the lower part of the slide block is the clip 16 which is revoluble on the block 15. This clip engages the battens 17, 17 between which the background is fastened by a pivot pin 18 so that the ground will always hang squarely.
The grounds are preferably painted on both sides so that by revolving the clip 16 either side may be presented to the camera.
When a background provided with a foreground cloth is used rings 20, 20 may be suspended so that the foreground cloth may be rolled up and its protruding battens 21 inserted in the rings permitting the background to be used in the usual manner.
By telescoping the support 1, 2 the grounds may be raised and lowered. By swinging the arms 11, 12 or 13 the grounds may be placed in any position. Sliding the blocks 15 serves to further control the position of the ground. By turning the ground on the swivel clip 16 anydesired angle may be secured and finally by arranging the arms, blocks and swivels any desired combination of grounds may be secured. Fig. 3
shows one ground in use, Fig. 2 two grounds arranged as a panorama for groups and Fig. 3 two grounds as a corner or angle.
It is obvious that reflectors may be scoured to the clips or arms and manipulated in any desired manner.
For storage or transportation the blocks 15 are slid off their rods and the backgrounds rolled up on their battens. The plate 3 is removed from the upright and the block 9 is slid up until the feet 5 and 7 are parallel to the part 1. The upper part 2 of the upright is then telescoped into the lower part 1 thereby reducing the whole structure to the smallest possible bulk.
We claim 1. A photographic background carrier comprising an upright, a horizontal plate on the upper end of the upright, an arm car ried on the upper face thereof and freely movable in a plane at right angles to the upright, a block slidable on the arm and a background clip pivotally mounted on the block.
2. A carrier for photographic backgrounds comprising an upright consisting of two telescoping members, a horizontal plate carried on the upper end of the upper member, an arm carried on'the upper face of the plate and freely movable in a plane at right angles to theupright, a block slidable on the arm and a background clip pivotally mounted on the block.
3. A photographic background carrier comprising an upright, a horizontal plate carried on the upper end thereof, an arm carried on the upper face of the plate and freely movable in a plane at right angles to the upright, a block slidable on the arm, a background clip pivotally mounted on the block, feet pivotally mounted on the bottom of the upright and braces between the feet and upright.
l. A photographic background carrier comprising an upright, a plate on the upper end thereof at right anglesthereto, an arm pivoted to the rear of the plate and bearing on the body thereof and movable in a plane In testimony whereof We have afiixed our signatures in presence of tWo Witnesses.
