ROGERS, of Plainfield, in the county of Union, and `State of New Jersey, havepinvented a new and improved Clothes-Horse; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the sam-e, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved clothes-horse, of that class which are provided with folding arms to admit of the device, when not in use, being` folded or adjusted in compact form, so that it may be stowed away or placed in an apartment without monopolizing much space.

The invention consists in a novel manner of connecting the arms to the upright or standard of the device,

wiferehy said arms may be folded in such a manner as not to increase the length or height of the device above that it occupies when the arms are distended for use. v

The ordinary clothes-horses of this kind, when their arms are folded, are very materially increased in length or height, so much so that they cannot be placed in an upright position in an apartment having a ceiling of ordinary height, and hence, when not in use, they must be laid in a horizontal position on the iioor .or placed in an inclined position in a corner. ,This inconvenience is fully obviated by my improvement. In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention, in a distended state. taken in the line x x, iig. 3.

A represents an upright or standard, the lower end of which is framed into a suitable base, B. On this upright or standard there are placed 'and properly-secured a number of metal plates, C, at a suitable distance apart. These plates are of quadrilatcral form, and they have at each angle or corner an inciined projection, a, from the lower ends of which pins project horizontally at right angles. The plates C have also right-angular notches c made in them at each angle or corner, as shown in fig. 3, and the under sides ofthe plates have recesses 0r grooves CZ in them in line with the notches c. v(See figs. 1 and D reprcsentugooden arms, the inner ends of which are fitted in the notches c of the plates c, said arms, when distended or drawn out for use, rest-ing on the pins b of the projections a, and their inner ends beine' in the recesses or grooves d. By this means the arms are supported in a horizontal position and rendered capable of supporting the weight of the clothes placed upon them; but, in order that the arms may be more firmly supported and the whole device rendered stifi` and firm when in use, their outer ends are secured by pivots e to upright bars E, as shown clearly in figs. 1 and 2. When the device is not required for use the out-er ends ofthe arms D and upright bars E are slightly raised, so that the inner ends of the arms may clear the rear ends of the recesses or grooves al, and said arms may then be shoved inward and downward and the device consequently be compactly folded, as shown in fig. 2, neither the bars E nor arms D extending beyond the upper end of the upright or standard A. The device, therefore, will not be in the least increased in length by being folded, and it may be placed or kept in an upright position and in a folded state in anyroom which will admit of it being placed in an upright position when unfolded or distended. The upright A, base B, arms D, and upright bars E may all he of wood; and in order to prevent the arms D being drawn entirely out from the plates C pins ax are inserted in the arms D.

l do not confine myself to the precise mode of construction herein shown and described, for thatmay he modified or varied and the same end attained; but what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A clothes-horse, having its arms D attached to or connected with the standard A by means of the notched metal plate C provided at each corner with an inclined projection, a, horizontal pins b, and grooves d, substana tially as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
