romaine TABLE-sass.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be .it known that I, Janos Kannmnn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvonted certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Table-Bases, ofwliich the following is "a specification.
My invention relates to foldable furniture and more specifically to a foldable table-top support or base.
'The object of my inyention is the proyisionof an article of furniture of the character mentioned which may be readily attached toa table-top or detached from that supported thereby, and which, when detached, maybe readily folded together so as to occupy a-minimumamount of space for storage or transportation.
A further object is the productionof a support as mentioned which will be efficient 'in use and of strong, durable and economical construction. I 1 Other objects will appear hereinafter. With these objects in view my invention consists in a table-topcharacterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be'm'ore readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my suport in its present preferred form showing Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof in folded position, Fig. 3 is a sectional detail illustrating the preferred means employed of fastening a table-top to' the support, and Figs. 4: and 5 are top plan views of slightly modified forms of my evice.
Referring now to the drawings the sup porting device therein shown is composed of a plurality of similar angular, preferably substantially U-shaped, members 1 each consisting of a verticall disposed body portion 2 and horiz'onta 1y disposed coplanar upper and lower arms 3 and 4: respectively. The body po1jtions2 of said members 1 are swingingly secured together by hinges 5 with ongitudinal edges contiguous, asc shown in Fig. 2. The inner edges 6 of 51nd body portions of said members are ven a wide V-shape so that, when the lat "unfolded into radlating or operative posicollapsed position, as shown in Fig. 2.
I Specification of Letters lctenh', July .1910. Application filed January a1; 1910. Serial It. MLML I tion, asshowniri Fig. 1, said edges will contact eachother. and snugly fit together to hold said support members ri 'd in this osition. Having its erid 7 pivots ly secured e upper side of one of the in a recess 8 in t endmost of the members 1 is a hook member 9. Provided in the upper side of the other of the endmost members 1 in a similar recess 10 provided therein is a slot 11 adapted for engagement b the hooked extremity ofsaid f member 9. ith this provision said hook member it will be observed may be employed to hold the support members in either distended position, as shown in Fig. l ror he recesses 8 and 10 together with similar recesses 12 provided in the upper surfaces of the'interinediate members 1 and which are engaged by the hook member 9 when the same is arranged for the retention of the device in collapsed position, or provided to serve as a seat for said hook member. so that, when thetable-top is arranged upon the support, the latter will present anunobstructed-flat upper surface for engagement thereby.
Provided in the outer end portion of each of the arms 3 of the members 1 is a hooked securing member 14 rotatably and slidably mounted therein. The table-top will be provided in its under side with a plurality of recesses 15 each of which is partly covered by a rigidly secured shown in Fig. 3. Sai recesses will be so positioned in the table-top that, when the late 16, as clearly atter is properly arranged u n the dis tended support, the upper en s of the securing members 14:- of the latter may project into said recesses and be turned to engage the plates 16. Now, bymeans of thumb screws 17 threaded upon the lower ends of the members 14, the latter may evidently be drawn into clamping en gement with/said plates to securely lock t e table top to the support' As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the support ieferably composed of four members 1.
owever, I do not wish-tolimit myself to this number and in Fig. 4 I have shown the same composed of three'members 1. The preferred form 'of my su ort and-fillet shown in Fig.4 are especia y desi the support of circular table-tops. Fig. 5 I have shown'a form 'which ma be employed in connection with tops o an elongate form. In this form t wo supports of struction as shown and described one of neat appearance, of ellicicntand durable design and of a readily foldable nature will be provided.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts described withoutdeparting from the spirit ,of the invention comprehended within the scope of the appended claims. And although I have designed my device'with special reference to its employment in conjunction with table tops it may be used for any other purpose to which it is applicable.
l-laving described my inventionwhat 1 claim as-new and desire to secure by Letters .Iatent is: t
1 A foldable support comprising a pin rality of Substantial members, each consisting of a vertical body y U-shaped supporting portion and upper and lower horizontal portions, the said vertical portions being hinged together, and the said upper horizontal portions bem 'provided with recesses in their upper sun aces, the recess in one ofthe end members of said upper horizontal portions being provided with a locking slot; and a hook member pivoted in the recess in the other end member and arranged to engage said locking slot when saidsupportmg members are in their folded or distended positions, substantially as described.
2. A foldable sup )ortcomprising a plurality of substantially U-shaped supporting members, each consisting of a vertical body portion and u mm and lower horizontal portions, the saitl vertical portions having V- shaped contiguous edges and being hinged together, and the said upper horizontal portions bem provided with recesses lll then" upper sur aces, the recess in one of the end members of said. upper horizontal portions being provided with a locking slot; and a hook member pivoted in the recess in the other end member and arranged to engage said locking slot when saidsu )porting members are in either folded or 'stended positions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
