To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, ALEXANDER URBAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fastenings for rails,-such as are used in track construction, the fastenings being adapted particularly for use at the joints where one rail abuts against another.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby such joints are firmly held upon the ties or sleepers so that the adjoining rails will be maintained in accurate alinement.
Another object is to provide such devices which are particularly easy to apply, and l which can be removed when desired, without the usual labor involved. f-
These and other objects, such as simplicity of parts, and low cost of manufacture, are attained by the novel construction of parts hereafter described, and shown in the ac-' companying drawings, forming part of this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a section of track, and indicating the applica-l, tion of the invention. In the drawing, the track rail head is indi-' cated by the numeral 10, the stem 11 and the base 12, while the ties have the numeral if 14 appended to them.
In carrying out the invention, the ties are preferably recessed on opposite sides of the i rail center, and have secured in them blocks 15, held firmly down by spikes 16, or other preferred fastenings, such as are commonlyused. Thus a double means is provided to maintain the block in a rigid position, both laterally and longitudinally with relation -L 1'0 the tie The front ends of the blocks 15 are 'formec. 7
with concave faces 18, against which rest the outer convex portions 20 of .therail clamps, the rounded part being a continuation of the flange 21, which is formed integrally with a vertical plate 22, adapted to make contact below the head of the rail, as at 28, and also with the upper portion of the rail base at 24, whereby the rail is stiffened and supported, the same performing the function of a fish plate. Extending between the flange 21 and vertical element 22 are integrally formed braces 25, so that a stiff and rigid structureis presented. These clamps are secured, in addition to the rounded portion 20, by screw bolts26 or other preferred fastening means, and are so adjusted with reference to the rail ends, that an equal length of each rail is held between the clamps which are used as clearly indicated in the several views.
In operation, the blocks 15 are inserted in the recessed ties and spiked rigidly in place; the clamps are then entered so that the part 20 makes contact with the recess 18, the vertical part 22 then swung into position upon opposite. sides of the rail, pivoting against the blocks 15, which hold them closely in engagement with the rail stem as will be apparent. be inserted, binding and clamping the entire structure rigidly together and holding the ends of the rails so that they cannot move laterally.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a rail clamping device, the combination with a pair of rails and sleepers upon which said rails rest, of a pair of blocks ressed in said sleepers upon opposite sides of the rails, a palr of clamp brackets suited to the stem of said rail, contacting with the base and head thereof, flanged elements extween said flange elements and said brackets.
2.
