To LZZ wit/0m t iii/ty concern: Be it known that I, JONAH E. Davis, of Lindsey, in the county of Jeerson and State of Pennsylvania-,have invented a new and useful Rail-Joint, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the joint and end-rail formation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing one rail in place and the otherbeing inserted; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line III III of Fig. 2.
My invention relates to the class of railjoints, and is designed to provide an improved device of this character which may be used Without bolts and in which the rails are held by the spikes which secure the joint in place.
In the drawings, 2 represents a rail portion of the joint, which is substantially similar in cross-section to that of the rails. This railsection is secured to a base-plate 3,which extends beyond iis ends, and at the sides of the rail-section are secured the angle-bars 44, whose lower flan ges 5 rest upon spacing-plates 6 between them and the base-flanges 7 of the rail-section 2. The angle lengths are of substantially the same length as the base-plates, while the plates 6 are of the same length as the rail-section. The upper portions of the angle-plates are notched, as shown at 8, near their ends to receive downward lugs or projections 9 upon the ends of the rails. Spikeholes 10 and ll are provided in the base-plate and angle-bars in their end portions, and spike-holes l2 extend through the central portions of the angle-bars, spacing-plates,and base-plates. i
The joint thus described may be formed in any desirable way, as by casting, welding, or otherwise, and in using the joint the rails are slipped in endwise, as shown at the right hand of Fig. 2, and. then pushed down so that the lugs 9 engage the notched or recessed portions 8 of the angle-bar members. Plates 18 of the form shown in Fig. l are then slipped in between the lower langes of the rails and the lower flanges of the angle-bars at the end,
thus filling these spaces. Spikes are then driven through the registering holes lO and 1l, these spikes passing through the registering holes in the rail-base, and spikes are also driven through the holes 12 of the joint. These spikes serve to hold the joint in position and also to hold the rails in place in the joint.
f The advantages of my invention result from the fact that no bolts are required, while the joint may be cheaply made and is of great strength.
Many changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts and the method of making the joints Without departing from my invention.
I claim- 1. A rail-joint device comprising acentral rail-section, angle-bars and a base-plate eX- tending beyond the ends of said section and spaced apart to receive the base-danges of the rails, the base-plate and the base-flanges of the angle-bars having spike-holes to receive spikes for holding the rails in place; substantially as described.
2. A rail-jointhayinga central rail-section, side angle-bars and a base-plate, plates arranged to fit between the end portions` of the angle-bar iianges and the base-flanges of the rails and spike-holes extending through the angle-bars, the spacing-plates and the baseplate; substantially as described.
3. Arail-joint havinga central rail-section, side an glebars extending beyond it, the rails and angle-bars having interfitting lugs and recesses,a base-plate,spacing-plates arranged to it between the angle-plate lianges and the base-flanges of the rail, and spike-holes extendingthrough the anglebars, spacingplates, rails and base-plate; substantially as described.
