RAIL-JOINT CONNECTION.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OLOF NORDIN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Sfiidertelje, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joint Connections; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention relates to rail-joints, its object being to prevent shocks as the rolling-stock passes over the jointand to make the rail-joint as durable as possible.

The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Figure 1 in a side view and a longitudinal section on line a b of Fig. 2, which latter shows a top view of the joint. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sections, respectively, p11 lines 0 cl and efof Fig. 1 viewed from the eft.

The device is characterized by the two rails 1 2 to be joined together being placed with their ends sufficiently apart to leave a greater intermediate space than ordinarily and locating in this space between the rail ends on each side the angle-shaped fish-plates 3 4, having a form corresponding to the rail-head 7 and held together by means of a bolt 6. The fish-plates 3 4 bear against each other by means of the faces 5 along a vertical plane extending longitudinally. The head 7 is cut away wedge-shaped at each rail end. The

portions cut away are replaced by the fishplates 3 4, which thus at the rail-heads 7 obtain lateral faces 8, diverging from the longitudinal direction of the rail. At the faces 8 are the intermediate spaces 15, requiredv to provide for the variations in length of the rails. The points 9 of the'wedge-ends of the rail-heads '7 are rounded off, so as to give them about the same width as the web 10. The extremities 11 of the fish-plates at the sides of the rail-heads are cut oif perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction of the rail, so that no sharp points are left at said extremities. The lower portion of the fish-plates 3 4 is embraced by upwardly-projecting edges 12 of a bottom plate 13, which keeps the joint rigid. Fish-bolts 14 are carried through the rail ends and fish-plates 3 4 for holding said parts together. By means of this device, consequently, shocks are excluded when the rolling-stock is passing over the joint. This railjoint, moreover, is more durable than any other. The device also oifers a great advantage in being readily applicable to the rails and joints previously in use.

I claim- 1. In a rail-joint, the combination of rails having their heads cut away wedge-shaped at the ends, two fish-plates 3, 4entering between the rail ends, which are located apart, and re placing the portions of the rail-heads cut away, said fish-plates 3, 4 being held together bya fish-bolt 6 carried through the fish-plates 3, 4 at the space between the rail ends, and here having faces 5 bearing against each other along a longitudinalplane, and a bottom plate 13 having upwardly-projecting lateral edges 12 embracing the lower portions of the fishplates 3, 4, for the purpose set forth.

2. In a rail-joint, the combination of rails having their heads cut away wedge-shaped at the ends, two fish-plates 3, 4 entering between the rail ends, which are located apart, and replacing the portions of the rail-heads cut away, said fish-plates 3, 4 being held together by a fish-bolt 6 carried through the fish-plates 3, 4 at the space between the rail ends, and here having faces 5 bearing against each other alonga longitudinal plane, andabottom plate 13 having upwardly-projecting lateral edges 12 embracing the lower portions of the fishplates 3, 4 and rounded points 9 on the wedged ends of the rails, for the purpose set forth.

3. In a rail-joint, the combination of rails having their heads cut away wedge-shaped at the ends, two fish-plates 3, 4 entering between the rail ends, which are located apart,and replacing the portions of the rail-heads cut away, said fish-plates 3, 4 being held together by a fish-bolt 6 carried through the fish-plates 3, 4 at the space between the rail ends, and here having faces 5 bearin g against each other ence of two subscribing witnesses.
